Riki, Gilbert facing bans after 'Battle of Brisbane'
Broncos back-rower Riki was slapped with a grade-two careless high tackle after his shoulder collected the head of Dolphins winger Jack Bostock in the 39th minute of the Battle of Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Gilbert received the same grading for a similar offence for a shot on Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs in the 54th minute. The Dolphins were on Saturday still mulling over whether to fight the charge after losing 20-12 to a gritty Broncos outfit.
Riki was fortunate to stay on the field after Bostock went off for an HIA, which he passed, while Staggs was able to continue after Gilbert's hit.
The Broncos will likely not risk a three-week suspension by fighting Riki's charge. His place in the team for next Saturday night's home clash with Wests Tigers will likely be taken by bench back-rower Brendan Piakura.
New Zealand international Riki had his best game of the season against the Dolphins where he ran for 150m, made a line break and five tackle busts, along with 33 tackles.
The Broncos have been able to select the same starting pack for the opening four rounds but will now be forced into an adjustment if they elect not to fight the charge.
Piakura has been playing off the bench in the opening four rounds and has had limited minutes.
He did put a cracking shot on Dolphins centre Herbie Farnworth in the closing minutes of the derby to remind his former teammate of his wares.
The winless Dolphins can ill-afford to lose Gilbert who despite running out in the 13 jersey also spent time in the back-row. That allowed Max Plath to play in his preferred middle forward position where he will likely move to for next Saturday afternoon's away clash with Gold Coast.

The Denver Broncos made two roster moves following their preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Indianapolis Colts are in need of some reinforcements after sustaining multiple injuries to their secondary, and there may not be any better options right now than someone who was in the upper echelon of his position group for several seasons. Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard is coming to Indy, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 32-year-old was a free agent for the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign, despite the Cincinnati Bengals extending him a contract offer. His health, declining skill set and an ongoing lawsuit could have possibly limited his market. The Colts are feeling desperate, however, and will roll the dice on the former All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler. Howard's agent, David Canter of Aura Sports Group, revealed the news on Monday morning. Indianapolis allowed 229.4 passing yards per game last season, which ranked seventh-worst in the NFL, causing general manager Chris Ballard to address the issue in free agency. The Colts signed Super Bowl champion and 2023 Second-Team All-Pro Charvarius Ward to a three-year contract for $60 million with $35 million guaranteed. He is only one man, though. Since Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents are both dealing with injuries, the organization has to pivot. While the prospect of trusting an aging corner who is embroiled in a legal dispute is probably unsettling to plenty of fans, Indy clearly still believes Howard has some productive football left in him. New Colts CB Xavien Howard made his mark in Miami The 2016 second-round draft pick recorded an outstanding 29 interceptions in 100 games with the Dolphins, leading the NFL in that category during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. He also posted 95 pass breakups, 258 solo tackles, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in that span. Xavien Howard suffered a foot injury in 2023, and Miami ultimately released him in March of 2024. There is no telling how he will perform after the layoff, but cornerbacks can only do so much after they lose a step. The Houston, Texas native may have to rely on his veteran instincts in order to make a positive impact on the field in 2025. The Colts have less than three weeks to sort out their secondary. Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi is on the cusp of inking a contract extension but sinking Manly away and staying in the finals race is the first item on his agenda. The 33-year-old has been in the naughty corner the past fortnight after a dangerous tackle gone wrong that broke the leg of Warriors forward Jacob Laban. It was an accident but Kaufusi has been a repeat offender in the suspension stakes. The defensive clout of the two-time premiership winner at Melbourne was missed by the Dolphins in the past fortnight where they lost 64-12 to Sydney Roosters and 38-28 to Brisbane. It was no surprise he was asked if he felt guilty after the latest addition to his rap sheet. "Everything runs through my mind," he said. "I can't blame it on an injury, it was through suspension, and that's probably the worst thing. "That tackle was pretty sloppy and that's exactly why they're trying to get rid of, because boys do get injured from it.
