South Side boxing event aims to find cure for children's brain tumor
CHICAGO (WGN) — It's just about time to get ready to rumble for a good cause on the city's South Side.
Dan Letz is the owner and operator of Letz Box Chicago—a pugilistic palace in Mount Greenwood. For the last several months, he's been training a good-hearted, fleet-footed field of warriors who are fighting to help find a cure for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), which is a brain tumor that can develop in the brainstem.
'It's horrific. It affects mainly children,' Katie Gaskin said. 'It's a tumor that grows within the brain stem, specifically in the ponds, and when a child is diagnosed with this, right now, they're really only given radiation as a treatment option and usually eight to 12 months to live.'
Gaskin's son, Anthony, was 7 years old when he died from DIPG, just 19 months after his diagnosis. In memory of Anthony, who Gaskin described as an old soul who loved the Chicago Cubs, she started the Anthony's Avengers DIPG Foundation.
Letz and Gaskin have partnered to host an event on Friday, June 13 at Saint Rita of Cascia High School in benefit of Anthony's Avengers and their mission to find a cure. Starting at 7 p.m., the St. Rita Mustang's football field will be transformed into a boxing ring under the Friday night lights of a different sort.
19-year-old Julian 'J-Dog' Guzman, a University of Illinois-Chicago student studying architecture, is one of those boxers training under Letz who aim to lend a hand, while also landing a punch.
'I'm feeling good. I'm ready to put on a performance,' Guzman said. 'I've been training hard. I'm ready to put on in the ring.'

New additions such as starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and third baseman Alex Bregman brought more star power. Top prospects such as Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony were knocking on the doors of the big leagues. Yet, the team has struggled. Currently mired in fourth place in the AL East, nine and a half games behind the New York Yankees, something has to give. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal suggested in a Sunday article on the Athletic that the time is now for the team to promote Anthony and send Campbell back to Triple-A. Advertisement 'Boston Red Sox rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell needs more defensive reps at Triple A,' wrote Rosenthal on Sunday. 'Top prospect Roman Anthony needs to be hitting his 497-foot grand slams in the big leagues. Exchanging one for the other would make the Sox a better team.' Rosenthal's argument makes sense. By running an outfield of Anthony in left, Jarren Duran in center field and Wilyer Abreu in right, the team could use Ceddanne Rafaela and David Hamilton at second while Campbell gets more reps in Triple-A. The rookie started off strong but has cooled off quite a bit lately. Would bringing Anthony up and sending Campbell down help spark the Sox back into contention? Can young players help Red Sox get back to their past winning ways? Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Campbell's defense at second has been a sore spot all season, and he made an inexcusable mistake during Saturday's 10-7 win over the Yankees. Offensively, he is hitting .129 in his last 25 games. For a team that has playoff aspirations like the Red Sox, that simply isn't good enough. It's time for manager Alex Cora and president of baseball operations Craig Breslow to start making moves to shake up this squad. Advertisement Calling up Marcelo Mayer to replace Bregman at third was the right decision. By giving another one of their top prospects plenty of leeway, Breslow and Cora can adjust if he begins to struggle like Campbell currently has. The next step is bringing Anthony to Fenway Park. Boston Red Sox star prospect Roman Anthony made his MLB debut on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. While Anthony went hitless in his much-anticipated first game, a 10-8 loss in 11 innings, he did record an RBI groundout. Advertisement Before going 0-for-4 at the plate in the loss, the 21-year-old Anthony spoke about how he learned of his call-up to the majors, per ESPN. 'I didn't really think anything of it, to be honest. I was just kind of waiting around in the food room with a few of the guys, and then all of a sudden, he came out and just said, 'Hey, you're going to the big leagues,'' Anthony said. 'From there on out it's kind of been a little bit of a blur. But it was amazing. You dream of that every single day. So, to finally hear it was definitely awesome.' With the Red Sox struggling this season, fans and media had been clamoring for Anthony to finally get called up. The hope is that MLB's top prospect will spark a turnaround in Boston. He recently made waves with a 497-foot grand slam in Triple-A. Anthony wasn't able to lead the Red Sox to a win on Monday night, but the Fenway Park faithful gave him a loud pop in his first at-bat. His first outing was a bit of a roller-coaster ride, with some hard contact that didn't result in any hits and a misplay in the field that led to an unearned run. Advertisement But this is just the beginning for Roman Anthony, and he's excited to get his opportunity after Wilyer Abreu's injury facilitated the call-up. Boston already called up fellow star prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer earlier this season. The Red Sox dropped to 32-36 on the season after Monday's loss, which is nine games behind the first-place New York Yankees and 4.5 games out in the AL Wild Card race.
