South Africa's new vehicle market continues to defy the economic odds, with another strong sales month recorded in June.
The total new vehicle market saw a volume of 47,294 units last month, an impressive increase of 18.7% versus the same month in 2024.
Robust growth was seen in both the passenger car market, which grew by 21.7% year-on-year to total 26,763 units in June, and the light commercial sector, which surged by 14.9% to 10,559 units.
But while the medium commercials also showed solid growth, up 24.7% to 652 units, the heavy commercials decreased by 3.1% to 1,943 units.
85.9% of vehicles were sold through the traditional dealer channels in June, Naamsa said, while the rental industry scooped up 8.2% and corporate and government clients accounted for 3.2% and 2.7% of the market, respectively.
Naamsa said that sales for the first half of 2025 were now 1.36% ahead of the same period in 2024.
On the sales charts, the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger led the bakkie race, both making notable gains over the previous month, while the Toyota Corolla Cross surged to the top of the passenger car list with an impressive volume of 2,132 units. Suzuki's Swift, which led the way last month, fell back to seventh after the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro made some notable gains.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Hilux must take the fight to Ford Ranger

Crews need to fast and consistent during Rally-Raid double header around Parys. The South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC) heads to Parys in the Free State for a season-defining double-header at the Ingco Parys 400 (Round 2) and Ingco Vaal 400 (Round 3) this weekend. The mission for the Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa (TGRSA) team in their GR Hilux IMT EVOs is simple; beat the Ford Ranger. Nothing less than two victories will suffice. Serving up nearly 800km of competitive racing and with two full sets of championship points up for grabs, this is the chance for the crews to stake their claim in the 2025 title fight. With more than 60% of the route entirely new and the action centred around Stonehenge River Lodge on the banks of the Vaal River, the event promises fast, unpredictable terrain and the kind of strategic challenge that could make or break a season. ALSO READ: Evo Plus Ford Ranger out to challenge Gazoo Racing Toyota Hilux Round 1 done and dusted The opening round of the 2025 SARRC championship, the Renault KEC 400 at Bronkhorstspruit, set the tone for an intensely competitive year with both of TGRSA's crews showing strong pace. As the championship moves into back-to-back one-day races, outright speed must be matched by careful planning and consistency to secure maximum points from both events. The Ingco Parys 400 will kick off with the prologue at 8:00am on Friday to determine starting orders. Two competitive stages of approximately 193km each follow, separated by a 30-minute service at the Designated Service Point (DSP) at Stonehenge River Lodge. Flooding brings changes Saturday's Ingco Vaal 400 will follow the same format. The prologue starts at 8:00am before two 208km stages will decide the winners of Round 3. The terrain around Parys includes fast, open sections and technical Free State farm tracks. Flooding earlier in the season meant that the bulk of the route had to changed. This has effectively levelled the playing field for all crews. Both days will demand supreme concentration from drivers and navigators, as well as faultless preparation from their service crews between races. ALSO READ: Toyota Hilux edges Ford Ranger as most popular armoured bakkie Toyota Hilux crews raring to go The Toyota GR Hilux IMT EVO line-up brings experience and enthusiasm for this double-header. Fresh from a podium at the season opener, Saood Variawa and French co-driver Francois Cazalet will be aiming to build on their strong start and keep themselves in the title hunt. Guy Botterill and Spanish co-driver Oriol Mena, who showed front-running pace before mechanical misfortune in Bronkhorstspruit, will be looking to bounce back into contention with a trouble-free run. TGRSA team principal Shameer Variawa says: 'Parys is always a tricky one, but the fact that more than half of the route will be completely new this year makes it even more of a challenge.' 'And an opportunity. With two rounds back-to-back, consistency will be the key, but the pace is also going to be flat out from the first kilometre. We've got a strong, well-balanced team, and I'm confident we can fight at the sharp end both days,' Variawa concludes.

Will Suzuki build cars in SA? Minister Tau engaging with carmakers as tariff debate rages

Donald Trump's automotive tariffs, while only affecting the Mercedes-Benz operations in South Africa, have sparked conversations on whether the government is sufficiently protecting own market. According to Lightstone, around 37% of the vehicles that South Africans purchase are locally produced, while a significant 36% are imported from India and 11% from China. At a media event outlining South Africa's response to Donald Trump's tariffs, held in Pretoria on Tuesday, Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau, revealed some interesting insights into the country's plan for the automotive industry. Asked whether the government was considering raising the import tariffs on Indian and Chinese vehicles in order to prevent our market from being flooded, Tau did not rule out such a move but said the Department of Trade, Industry and Commerce (DTIC) was not in favour of punitive measures. 'With regards to Chinese and Indian auto, it is a discussion that we're currently having with the intention of taking a less punitive approach, but rather taking a more proactive approach of getting some of those products manufactured in the country.' Tau said many Chinese manufacturers had expressed interest in establishing themselves in the country and were making contributions towards a revised Automotive Production and Development Program (APDP), which is currently under review. Tau said he could not comment on what the actual decision would be, regarding tariffs, but added that it was the government's intention to accelerate the policy development process and related instruments in the implementation of the APDP. Discussions with Suzuki Auto Earlier this year Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa revealed that at least three Chinese car manufacturers were considering setting up vehicle production facilities in South Africa. Interestingly, the DTIC has also been engaging with Suzuki Auto, which recently became the country's second best-selling brand, thanks largely to an affordable product portfolio sourced almost entirely from its Maruti Suzuki division in India. 'I should say that we spoke about the Chinese, but in the next two weeks, we'll also be engaging with both Japan and India. You would know that Suzuki has a great presence in the country right now, and we will be visiting. 'So whilst it's a Japanese company, they're exporting from India to the South African market. So we'll be touching (base with) both the parent company and the company that's exporting into the South African market to see how we can cooperate and collaborate, on the basis of seeking to attract them as an investor into our country. 'So we're not holding the stick as a starting point. We start with the carrot and then balance it with the stick," Tau concluded. IOL has approached Suzuki Auto for commentary and will update the story in due course. It's not just Suzuki that imports vehicles from India. Many of the smaller Toyotas, such as the Suzuki-built Starlet, Vitz, Rumion, and Urban Cruiser, are also sourced from there, as are other high-volume products from Korean brands, most notably the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Sonet. Tata is also set to re-enter the South African market later this month. While Chinese imports accounted for just 11% of vehicle sales last year, this number is growing rapidly, and with a raft of new brands set to launch in the near future, including Lepas, iCaur, and the reintroduction of Geely, it would appear that our market is in real danger of being saturated. Consider that the country already has 16 Chinese brands, with Chery and GWM/Haval now fixtures in the top 10 sales list. Can our market realistically accommodate so many brands? Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealer's Association (NADA), commented that South Africa is a relatively small market that already has one of the largest offerings of brands and derivatives locally. This benefits the buyer as it provides fierce competition. However, when it comes to the long-term sustainability of such a prolific brand count, Cohen feels the market will achieve a balance in the not-too-distant future. 'With consumers under extreme financial strain and new offerings that cater for high specification at competitive pricing, it is natural that those entities who cannot compete will suffer,' Cohen told IOL. 'I do, however, think that with certain brands remaining highly aspirational and product life cycles bringing new and exciting cars to market on a regular basis, we may see some brands recover while others could certainly fall away.' Ultimately, their feasibility will depend on economic growth. 'Unfortunately, the market is only so big and is completely dependent on the growth of the economy and jobs. At present, we are still not selling the number of vehicles we were doing before COVID, and without growth, the share of sales will need to keep dividing amongst the brands on offer,' Cohen added. 'If we can get the economy to grow meaningfully, I think more brands will see a brighter future.' IOL Motoring

Armormax Ford Ranger offers the ultimate in high-tech security

Ballistic glass and internationally sourced steel keep the occupants of this double cab bakkie safe. Armormax has just released details of their newly-developed Security Variant Ford Ranger double cab and it reads like something out of Call of Duty. The brief was for a patrol and intercept vehicle that is capable of withstanding fire from assault rifles from multiple assailants in non-permissible terrain. The vehicle had to also be as discreet as possible and not give away that it is armoured patrol vehicle in any way. Armormax Ford Ranger specifications When there is a requirement for a discreet armoured vehicle this involves the use of lightweight armouring solutions. This includes OEM-fit ballistic glass and the retention of all original OEM panels and surfaces. For the opaque armour fitted to the Ford Ranger, a combination of Ramor and Armox ballistic steel sourced internationally was used for all internal areas and surfaces including the doors, pillars, firewalls, front fenders, headers and full-side overlaps. Floor and roof armour are made up of lightweight composite materials. The fuel tank is also coated and sealed with Armorcote, which allows for self-sealing in the instance of penetration or damage. The battery and ECU are protected with lightweight composite material. Side windows are a custom design fitted with Phoenix B6 ballistic glass integrated into a bolt-on/bolt-off frame made of ballistic steel. Rear hatch exit The rear window is a custom-design fitted with Phoenix B6 ballistic glass. It is bolted to a ballistic steel frame on a quick-release system used as an emergency escape hatch. This was chosen over the use of a roof-based escape system in the case of a vehicle rollover. The rear hatch can be used no matter the final resting position of the bakkie. The two rear doors and front passenger door of the Ford Ranger have also been fitted with bespoke sliding gun ports capable of accommodating the muzzle of any assault firearm and have been ergonomically positioned for an operator to comfortably discharge a weapon from inside the bakkie. These were chosen over the traditional glass-mounted round ports to keep the vehicle as discreet as possible. ALSO READ: Armoured Ford Ranger tough enough for Dricus du Plessis Accessories Considering the nature of the environment where this Ford Ranger will likely operate the following was fitted: High-powered LED light bars, mounted to a premium roof rack for the sides and rear of the vehicle, in instances where discretion is not required. This illuminates a large area around the bakkie. High-powered rotating spotlight mounted to the front of the roof rack. It is controlled via a remote control that can be used inside or outside the bakkie and is also capable of 360-degree movement to light up any specific area. It can be moved horizontally and vertically. White strobe lights that are hidden in the front grille and in the taillights of the bakkie. These are for situations which require a visible warning signal. Roof-mounted infra-red camera that can distinguish individuals from surroundings and is linked to a tablet mounted inside the Ford Ranger. This is perfect for situations where the bakkie must not be detected. Or where potential threats are not immediately visible or hidden from the rotating spotlight. This camera even allows for low-speed driving visibility in total darkness and can record incidents if required. These systems are all powered by a secondary battery with an integrated REDARC in-vehicle battery charger. Communication The Ford Ranger Security Variant is fitted with a PA system with an integrated siren. It also has a close quarters Push To Talk system for two-way communication inside of the bakkie. ALSO READ: Ford Ranger XLT perfect addition to typical Mzansi household Mobility The bakkie is also fitted with a top-of-the-range adjustable heavy-duty Old Man Emu suspension upgrade. The adjustable suspension allows for calibration and tuning to suit several specific environments and surfaces. It is designed to improve stability and agility in off-road situations. Each wheel of the Ford Ranger has been fitted with a military-grade Duraflat run flat system, to prevent disbanding of the tyre from the wheel when fully deflated and allows the operator to continue driving without the wheel making contact with the road surface. Armoured Ford Ranger pricing The base vehicle for this project was a 2.0 Turbo Diesel XL 4×4 Automatic. The Armormax upgrade can be fitted to any Ranger double cab, except for the Raptor due to its lower GVM. The conversion does not hamper or interfere with the standard manufacturer warranty or service plans. The total cost of the package, including all the extras is R1 043 478 excluding VAT and the base vehicle. A three-year warranty is also provided on the armouring components and workmanship.
