Olympian Pahal set to return from injury at Indian Open Athletics in Patna

Time of India18-07-2025
Kiran Pahal will be one of the major attractions at Indian Open Athletics meet to be held at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kanker Bagh, Patna, on Saturday.
Pahal, who competed at Paris Olympics and currently holds second-best timing by an Indian woman in 400m, will be making a comeback from injury and running for the first time since Paris Games.
Speaking ahead of the event, Pahal, a resident of Rohtak, Haryana, said, "After coming back from Paris, as I started training following a break, I felt a pain in my knee. At first I thought it would go away but once I did an MRI in March, I was told I had a third grade meniscus tear. As a result I had to undergo surgery and was under rehabilitation for a couple of months."
Naturally it's going to be challenging for the 24-year-old but Pahal said she will be looking to give her best.
Her PB at the moment is 50.92 seconds which she achieved during Indian Championships at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula last year that helped her make it to the Olympics. It's only slower than Hima Das's NR of 50.79 seconds that she had achieved at 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
Besides Pahal, another big name to compete at the meet will be Odisha's Srabani Nanda, who was part of the 4x100m relay team that won silver at Asian Athletics early this year and will be competing in the 100m.

It was her first international meet after almost three years, having last competed in 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Amiya Kumar Mallick, another senior athlete from Odisha and a former 100m national record holder, will also be part of the competition. The big names aside, a total of 390 athletes will be taking part in the event of which 23 are from Bihar.
Meanwhile, speaking during a press conference ahead of the event Raveendran Sankaran, director general cum CEO of Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA), said, "Very soon, an international level athletics track will be built at Patliputra Sports Complex, like the one used in Paris Olympics.
This will make this complex suitable for organizing national and international level athletics competitions."
The Sports Complex has already hosted several important events like the 4th Indian Open Under-23 Athletics Meet in 2024, 20th National Youth Athletics Championships and Khelo India Youth Games this year.
The state has been giving a lot of importance recently and after hosting Asian Champions Trophy for women last year, it will also host the men's Asia Cup from Aug 27 to Sept 7. Besides India, seven more teams will take part in the event and the winner will earn a spot at World Cup next year.

Gautam Gambhir's massive fight with Oval curator: ‘You don't tell us what we need to do'

The final Test of the India-England series just got spicier. Two days before the series deciding game, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir got in an argument with the Oval curator Lee Fortis. It is understood that the altercation was about the access of the playing area given to the Indian players. While there was no official reaction on the incident from either the Indian team or the Surrey Cricket County, the host, Gambhir seemed to be exchanging angry words with the curator who had allegedly questioned the presence of Indian players and coaches in a certain area of the ground. This comes after the Indian team fought with their backs to the wall against England and salvage a draw from the jaws of defeat at Old Trafford. That Test too had ended with words exchanged between England captain Ben Stokes and Indian batters like Ravindra Jadeja as the England captain tried to end the game early, apparently to 'protect his frontline bowlers'. On Tuesday, in scenes captured by India's travelling media contingent, Gambhir can be seen gesticulating and confronting the Oval chief curator Lee Fortis. In one clip, Gambhir can be heard pointing a finger at the curator and shouting 'You don't tell us what ne need to do'. India reached London on Monday and had their first training session on Tuesday. After having drawn the fourth Test at Old Trafford, India have a chance… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 29, 2025 The fifth Test could decide the fate of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with England currently leading the series 2-1. If Shubman Gill's India manage to win the Oval Test, they could tie the series.

Mandhana slips to second as Sciver-Brunt returns top position in ICC Women's ODI rankings

Dubai: Despite India clinching a 2-1 ODI series win against England, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has dropped one place to No. 2 in the latest ICC Women's ODI batters rankings. Dubai, July 29 (IANS) Despite India clinching a 2-1 ODI series win against England, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has dropped one place to No. 2 in the latest ICC Women's ODI batters skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt reclaimed the No.1 spot among ODI batters, riding on a superb 98 off 105 balls in the final match of the series. Sciver-Brunt's 160 runs in the series proved decisive in her leap to the top, despite England falling short in the series decider at Chester-le-Street. Mandhana, who scored 115 runs across the three matches, slipped a spot after briefly holding the top position. However, the rankings update brought better news for Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who surged 10 places to 11th, after her composed middle-order contributions. Jemimah Rodrigues also inched up two spots to 13th, rounding off a strong showing from India's core batting group during the England tour. The rankings update also reflected gains for bowlers. England's Sophie Ecclestone maintained her place at the top among ODI bowlers, followed by Australia's Ashleigh Gardner. However, Ireland's Orla Prendergast was the standout name across all departments. The 22-year-old Irish all-rounder had a series to remember against Zimbabwe, scoring an unbeaten 67 in the second ODI in Belfast. That effort catapulted her 12 places up to joint 22nd in the ODI batting charts. She also rose 10 places to 33rd among bowlers after a tight spell in the same game. Prendergast's all-round excellence saw her break into the top 10 among ODI all-rounders for the first time, now ranked No.10. Ireland's Arlene Kelly also climbed four spots to equal 30th among bowlers, while Gaby Lewis, the team's T20I captain, jumped four places to 14th among T20I batters after a pair of half-centuries against Zimbabwe.
