Kiran takes the spotlight in an event missing most top stars
With most of the big names staying away due to foreign participation or injury, Kiran Pahal was the biggest draw at the Indian Open at Patna's Pataliputra Sports Complex on Saturday that otherwise saw few noteworthy performances. Haryana's Kiran, the fastest Indian quartermiler last season, finished on top in the 400m in 54.93s across the two races. While it was far from her personal best, Kiran, only the second Indian to go under 51 seconds, was participating in her first competition this season and her maiden outing since the Paris Olympics. Home favourite Shatakshi Rai, meanwhile, clocked 12.04 seconds in the 100m and win Race A, pipping veteran Srabani Nanda by 0.1 seconds to be the overall winner. Srabani clocked 12.05s in Race C. With several of the events featuring three or fewer participants, specially among the women, the competition level was ordinary. Among the men, none of the promised big names turned up in the javelin throw, including Kishore Kumar Jena, who was expected to return to competition after recovering from an ankle injury. Rising youngsters Dipanshu Sharma and Vikrant Malik too were missing, with Rajasthan's Vipul Yadav taking top spot with a 66.42m throw. Haryana's Raja Babu won the 200m in 21.24s among the 43 runners who turned up across six races. Olympian Pahal set to return from injury at Indian Open Athletics in Patna
Kiran Pahal will be one of the major attractions at Indian Open Athletics meet to be held at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kanker Bagh, Patna, on Saturday. Pahal, who competed at Paris Olympics and currently holds second-best timing by an Indian woman in 400m, will be making a comeback from injury and running for the first time since Paris Games. Speaking ahead of the event, Pahal, a resident of Rohtak, Haryana, said, "After coming back from Paris, as I started training following a break, I felt a pain in my knee. At first I thought it would go away but once I did an MRI in March, I was told I had a third grade meniscus tear. As a result I had to undergo surgery and was under rehabilitation for a couple of months." Naturally it's going to be challenging for the 24-year-old but Pahal said she will be looking to give her best. Her PB at the moment is 50.92 seconds which she achieved during Indian Championships at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula last year that helped her make it to the Olympics. It's only slower than Hima Das's NR of 50.79 seconds that she had achieved at 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Amiya Kumar Mallick, another senior athlete from Odisha and a former 100m national record holder, will also be part of the competition. The big names aside, a total of 390 athletes will be taking part in the event of which 23 are from Bihar. Meanwhile, speaking during a press conference ahead of the event Raveendran Sankaran, director general cum CEO of Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA), said, "Very soon, an international level athletics track will be built at Patliputra Sports Complex, like the one used in Paris Olympics. This will make this complex suitable for organizing national and international level athletics competitions." The Sports Complex has already hosted several important events like the 4th Indian Open Under-23 Athletics Meet in 2024, 20th National Youth Athletics Championships and Khelo India Youth Games this year. The state has been giving a lot of importance recently and after hosting Asian Champions Trophy for women last year, it will also host the men's Asia Cup from Aug 27 to Sept 7. Besides India, seven more teams will take part in the event and the winner will earn a spot at World Cup next year.

AFI not to send women's 4x400m team for the Asians
With many top quartermilers skipping the National Federation athletics championships here, the Athletics Federation of India has decided not to send the women's 4x400m relay team for next month's Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea. National Games champion Aishwarya Mishra, this season's fastest 400m runner, and last year's topper Kiran Pahal missed the Federation meet here while Olympian Jyothika Sri Dandi's entry for the National meet here was rejected as she had competed in a domestic meet prior to the Kochi event. 'We are not prepared for the international event (in the women's relay) at the moment,' said AFI president Bahadur Singh Sagoo here on Thursday. The AFI will announce the Indian team for the Asians on Friday. The AFI had fixed the qualification standards for the Asian Championships but a few athletes who came close to them are also likely to be considered for the meet by the selection committee.
