Over 1,000 join inaugural 722 Walk in Kuching to mark Sarawak Day
KUCHING (July 22): Over 1,000 proud Sarawakians participated in the inaugural 722 Walk this morning, uniting in celebration of Sarawak Day and paying tribute to the state's enduring spirit, heritage and unity.
The three-kilometre walk, which began at 6am from MBKS Boulevard, concluded at the Kuching Waterfront with the hoisting of the state flag at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi.
In his welcoming remarks, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the 722 Walk was more than a physical activity – it was a powerful statement of solidarity.
'This is more than just a walk. It is a statement of unity, a reflection of our shared love for this land we call home,' he said before flagging off the walk.
Wee also thanked the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), saying their collaboration showed that setting aside differences could lead to greater accomplishments for the people.
'Today, we have made that vision a reality. And while next year DBKU will take the lead as host, we must remember that it is not about positions or organisers.
'The 722 Walk belongs to every Sarawakian. It belongs to all of us,' he said.
Emphasising the historical importance of the date, he said 722 is a reminder of Sarawak's journey towards self-determination and its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
'Let us not allow 722 to be reduced to a mere ritual or celebration.
'It must remain a call to action for all Sarawakians to stay united, to cherish our diversity, and to continue working together for a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak,' he said.
Also present were Kuching North Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman and Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai. 722 Walk Kuching MBKS sarawak day

UTS key catalyst in Sibu's transformation, says Dr Annuar
Dr Annuar speaks during the UTS Appreciation Dinner in Sibu on Tuesday. SIBU (July 23): Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) is not just an institution of higher learning but a major driver of Sibu's urban and socioeconomic development, said Deputy State Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. Speaking at the UTS Appreciation Dinner here on Tuesday, Dr Annuar said the university has come a long way since its early days as a university college with just 1,100 students, and now boasts an enrolment of over 4,000 students, with full capacity of 5,000 expected by year's end. 'When I was appointed as chairman, there were doubts and perceptions that UTS wasn't for the poor. 'That motivated us to change the narrative and improve accessibility. So, we introduced a 50 per cent bursary for all Sarawakian students, and it worked,' he said. Dr Annuar, who also chairs the UTS Board of Directors, said the initiative had a significant impact, especially in encouraging enrolment among rural and B40 students. The percentage of students from low-income families rose from just 8 per cent to nearly 40 per cent within a few years, he revealed. He expressed his hope that UTS would continue to act as a growth engine for Sibu, drawing a parallel to how Sunway has evolved into a thriving hub due to the presence of a university. 'Imagine 10,000 students living in Sibu, that's thousands renting homes, dining out, and boosting local businesses. A university can transform a town,' he said. He also disclosed ongoing efforts to attract international students and strengthen academic pathways from diploma to degree levels, noting that UTS is steadily gaining momentum to become one of the nation's top institutions. In a landmark announcement, Dr Annuar said the Sarawak government will offer free tertiary education at UTS for Sarawakian students starting next year. 'We never promised free education, but we made it happen. No other state, no matter how wealthy, is doing this. It's a historic milestone,' he said, lauding the bold vision of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Dr Annuar concluded by expressing his pride in seeing UTS grow and evolve into a major force for the future of Sarawak. 'My greatest satisfaction is witnessing UTS grow from 1,000 to 5,000 students and securing the support needed to make higher education accessible to all. This university is no longer just a campus, it's a key engine for Sarawak's future.' he said. Among those present at the event were UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abd Hamid, Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, and Zone 4 Sibu Fire chief Andy Alie. DPM Fadillah: 'Appreciation for the People' package shows Madani govt's commitment to rakyat
Fadillah says the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. – Bernama photo KUCHING (July 23): The 'Appreciation for the People' financial package announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reflects the Madani government's strong commitment to the welfare and trust of the rakyat, said Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof. Describing the package as a message of unity and gratitude, Fadillah said it acknowledges the contributions of Malaysians from all backgrounds, including those in rural areas, urban centres, civil service, and agriculture. 'This is clear proof that 'Malaysia Madani' is not just a slogan but a national movement that we indulge in successfully together,' said Fadillah in a statement. He said the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. 'The Prime Minister has succeeded in instilling confidence that fiscal reforms are on the right track – with the people's support as the main thrust,' he said. Fadillah pointed to the country's strengthening economic momentum, noting that Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, with a 4.5 per cent projection for the second quarter. He also highlighted Malaysia's jump of 11 spots to 23rd in the World Competitiveness Index 2025, and the ringgit's five per cent appreciation – currently trading at RM4.23 to the US dollar – placing it among Asia's top five performing currencies. 'The success is not just a figure on paper – they reflect increased investment, job creation, and stronger social policies for the people,' he said. Fadillah said the measures further demonstrate the effectiveness of the Madani government's approach in safeguarding public interest. 'As a Sarawakian, I have seen for myself the true meaning of a comprehensive policy. 'The increase in paddy floor prices, rubber incentives, and grassroots programmes such as Sejati Madani are tangible responses to the needs of the rural communities,' he said. He cited the expansion of the Madani Village Adoption Programme to 200 villages, with a target of 1,000 Madani-adopted schools by the end of 2025, as well as the Madani Rahmah Sales, now extended to all 600 state constituencies nationwide. As Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), Fadillah also welcomed the government's efforts in restructuring energy subsidies and electricity tariffs. Beginning this month, 85 per cent of domestic consumers are expected to see up to 14 per cent reductions in electricity bills. Meanwhile, targeted RON95 subsidies will lower fuel prices to RM1.99 per litre, with savings redirected to benefit Malaysians instead of foreign users. Fadillah said these reforms do not burden the rakyat — they bring fairness and relief to the majority. Fadillah, who is also responsible for Sabah and Sarawak Affairs, expressed appreciation for the additional public holiday announced for Sept 15, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. 'Let us all unite, join forces, and continue to support the Madani agenda that gives meaning to the people's lives. 'From villages to cities, from the Peninsula to Borneo – all Malaysians deserve to enjoy fair and equitable progress,' he said.

Sarawak charts path to statewide piped gas access, says Premier
Abang Johari cooks tapioca as a symbolic gesture for the launch. BINTULU (July 23): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the Sarawak government's strong commitment to expanding piped gas infrastructure to every household in the state – a move aimed at enhancing energy accessibility and economic equity. Speaking to reporters after launching the piped natural gas supply to homes in Sungai Plan here today, Abang Johari said the initiative is part of a long-term master plan to ensure Sarawakians benefit directly from the state's own gas resources. 'This is just the beginning of our effort to supply gas to our people so they can enjoy the benefits of the gas extracted in our own backyard,' he said. He cited a successful pilot project in the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Miri, where residents have seen savings of up to 40 per cent or around RM40 monthly after switching from gas cylinders to piped delivery. Determined to extend these benefits across Sarawak, the Premier unveiled the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which outlines a statewide piped gas distribution system. 'We are developing a network of gas distribution hubs throughout Sarawak in Bintulu, Kuching, Miri, and possibly Sibu from where piped gas can be channeled to surrounding areas, even reaching remote towns like Kapit,' he said. According to him, the concept of piped gas is not new to Sarawak, citing earlier systems in Lutong, Sarawak and Seria, Brunei, that predate the formation of Malaysia. Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak's legal framework, particularly the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance, remains intact and continues to empower the state to regulate and manage its own gas sector. Under this framework, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) has been formally appointed the sole gas aggregator for Sarawak, with full authority to manage supply from upstream to end users. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for endorsing this via a joint declaration between the federal and state governments, which enabled Petros to operate as the sole legal and operational aggregator. 'All companies involved in the gas business must comply with our existing laws. This is a people-centric project, and through the hub-and-spoke model, it will benefit not just urban dwellers but rural communities as well,' he said. The roadmap, he added, will offer tiered benefits across various user groups – residential homes, SMEs, and heavy industries such as methanol production – with rates based on consumption levels. 'The greatest impact will be on ordinary Sarawakians, especially B40 households and those with lower incomes, by easing their cost of living,' he said. Abang Johari also welcomed the federal government's latest cost-of-living measures announced today, including fuel price reductions and other incentives. 'PMX announced his support, and we too are helping our people. Thank you for the initiatives. It shows that the people of Sarawak benefit both from Kuala Lumpur and from Petra Jaya, Kuching,' he said. Also present at the event were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Petros chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo and other state Cabinet ministers and their deputies.
