Majorca 'dupe' has beautiful beaches, no crowds and £1.99 beers
When the Canary Islands spring to mind, you're likely to envision places like Tenerife and Gran Canaria - teeming with tourists, lively nightlife, and golden beaches. But what if you're seeking something a bit more serene?
There's one Canary Island that often gets overlooked, and that's exactly what makes it unique. La Gomera is a tranquil haven just a brief ferry journey from Tenerife and a sanctuary for those in search of peace. It is a perfect place for a holiday, with its verdant landscapes and dramatic cliffs. Unlike its busier counterparts, La Gomera isn't swamped with tourists.
That is why it has been named one of six dupes for Majorca. The Spanish Balearic island receives a colossal 17.8 million tourists each year, which can leave the place feeling a little overwhelming. The travel experts at Eurochange have shared lesser-known holiday spots across Europe that have several similarities to the popular Balearic destination. And, there are still plenty of incredibly cheap direct UK flights available this August.
Right now, it is possible to book direct return flights to Tenerife from Glasgow, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, starting from £87 in August. From there, it's just a 50-minute ferry to La Gomera. Hotels on Booking.com available from £50 per night, while beer will set you back just £1.99 and the average meal out costs £11.95.
The island offers a slower pace of life, making it the ideal spot to rejuvenate and reconnect with nature. Even better, it can reach temperatures of 21 °C in March with up to ten hours of sunshine each day, providing a heavenly escape from the northern European winter. Flights to Tenerife often cost less than £110, and from there, it's a picturesque 50-minute ferry ride to La Gomera.
The journey itself is an adventure, with views of the shimmering Atlantic and, if you're fortunate, a chance to spot dolphins. The island's crown jewel is Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Blanketed in ancient laurel forests, the park feels like something out of a fairytale.
La Gomera is also sprinkled with charming villages that seem frozen in time. Vallehermoso, with its vibrant houses and welcoming locals, is a must-see. Don't miss Agulo, often dubbed the "pearl of La Gomera" for its stunning views and cobbled streets.
Food lovers will be smitten with La Gomera's distinctive cuisine. Give "almogrote," a rich cheese spread, a go, or try "miel de palma," a sweet syrup derived from palm trees. While the beaches here may not be as expansive as those in Tenerife, La Gomera has some hidden treasures. Playa de Santiago is a tranquil spot to bask in the sun, while Valle Gran Rey boasts striking black-sand beaches and spectacular sunsets.

The research was commissioned by OLBG ahead of the new football seasons kicking off across Europe, which also plotted the top 10 grounds into an interactive map for fans. 'The variety and pull for fans to travel and see the beautiful game played out in different grounds looks as strong as ever, based on the number of pitches on people's bucket lists. More than a third (38 per cent) of supporters polled, via OnePoll, also admitted to backing a team outside the UK, with 85 per cent of those saying it's a dream to one day watch a game at their chosen ground. 'I'm a travel influencer - I've been to 17 European cities and I'll never go back to 3'
A travel influencer has shared her thoughts on three European cities she'd never return to after visiting 17 urban destinations across the continent last year A travel influencer has revealed the three European destinations she wishes she'd avoided after exploring 17 different. Last year, Sooyeon, a social media star from San Francisco undertook an ambitious European adventure. Despite enjoying much of her time on the continent and immersing herself in the local cultures, there were three holiday destinations that left her feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Taking to her TikTok account @ she shared her candid travel insights: "These are three cities I probably would've skipped," though she was quick to clarify: "Doesn't mean these are bad destinations, I just didn't enjoy them as much as other cities." Madrid Following a two and a half day stay in Spain's capital after visiting Barcelona, she confessed that the coastal city had captured her affections, leaving Madrid feeling rather lacklustre by comparison. She revealed: "The main reason is because I went to both Madrid and Barcelona on the same trip, and I feel like Madrid didn't have as many interesting things to do for me at least, other than the palace and museums. ...If I were to do this trip again, I would probably skip Madrid and spend more time in Barcelona." Catania Catania proved to be another destination that failed to meet Sooyeon's expectations. Located on Sicily's eastern coastline, the ancient port city appeared to be a perfect 'Italian getaway' destination in theory, yet the reality didn't match her aspirations. Sooyeon explained: "The city just felt a little run down and not the safest. People were also not afraid to stare at you - I'm sure they weren't trying to be rude or mean, but it felt a little uncomfortable as a female traveller." Berlin Berlin also featured on Sooyeon's disappointing destinations list, though her concerns about the German capital differed from her gripes with Catania and Madrid. She praised Berlin's 'welcoming' atmosphere and its collection of 'cool cafes, shops and roads', yet felt something was missing. "Don't get me wrong, I would love to live in Berlin," Sooyeon confessed. "But, as a tourist, I feel like the main attractions are history museums which I personally am not the biggest on, especially because at this point on my trip I was getting severe museum fatigue." She also observed that the food scene was rather international, making it trickier for her to discover genuine local dishes, which stays her number one priority when travelling. "The food scene was also pretty international, so I didn't find as many options for authentic local food, which is something I try to eat everywhere I go. Again, this is just my experience - what doesn't work for me, could work for you." Sooyeon's honest assessments triggered a wave of reactions on TikTok, with users split over her views on these beloved locations. One user passionately defended Madrid, declaring: "I will not accept any Madrid slander! I've been like four times and it's an incredible city." Others rushed to defend Catania, with one person pleading: "Everyone here pls don't skip Catania," whilst another commenter challenged her assessment of Berlin's cleanliness, hitting back: "Berlin is clean? What girl?"

Watch your shows on a flight without getting a dead arm holding your phone with a hack you wish you'd discovered sooner
Plus, how to get a free upgrade to first class on a plane PLANE EASY Watch your shows on a flight without getting a dead arm holding your phone with a hack you wish you'd discovered sooner Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FINDING ways to keep yourself entertained during a flight can often be tricky, unless you've got a book or your phone with you. The latter works like a charm to make the long journey go by in an instant - especially if you've pre-downloaded your go-to series prior to boarding the plane. Luckily, one savvy travelling enthusiast has come to the rescue with the ultimate hack - and it's one you wish you'd discovered sooner. According to the woman, TikTok user Adelina, the solution is simple - but the trick will only work if you have a phone case. Demonstrating the hack online, the passenger revealed you first need to take a shirt - or any piece of clothing on hand - and attach it to the tray, before locking it. Once done, she went on in the now-viral video, remove the phone case and place it underneath the clothing. Here, you can choose how high the screen will then sit - to ensure you avoid neck pain, it's best advised to place it as high as possible. The rest is straightforward - put the inside the case, with the piece of clothing in-between and enjoy your favourite show, whether that's reality series or a gripping true crime documentary on Netflix. This hack works because the extra material between the phone and the case will act as DIY movie screen, as the clothing will hold it in place. ''We improvise as best as we can,'' said Adelina, who posts under the username @ Since being uploaded online, the clip has taken the internet by storm, winning Adelina, from Romania, a whopping 2.2million views in just two days. European sleeper train with private cabins With the travel season in full swing, thousands found the hack helpful, as any gave the video a like and more than 200 flocked to comments. ''Why I didn't think of this earlier?'' wrote one gobsmacked viewer. Another was just as stunned, writing: ''Very smart, young lady.'' How to get a free upgrade to first class on a plane Travelers often wonder how to secure an upgrade to first class without paying the premium price. According to a flight attendant, there are several strategies passengers can employ to increase their chances. Firstly, loyalty to an airline is crucial; frequent flyers and those with elite status are more likely to receive upgrades. Additionally, booking directly with the airline rather than through third-party sites can improve your odds, as can being flexible with your travel dates and times. Dressing smartly and arriving early can also make a difference. While airlines generally prioritize upgrades based on status and fare class, a well-dressed passenger who checks in early may catch the staff's attention. It's also beneficial to be polite and friendly to the airline staff, as they have the discretion to upgrade passengers at their own judgment. Lastly, if you're celebrating a special occasion, such as a honeymoon or birthday, it doesn't hurt to mention it. While not guaranteed, some flight attendants might consider this when deciding on upgrades. Overall, while there's no surefire way to get a free upgrade, combining these strategies can certainly improve your chances. ''Genius,'' someone else exclaimed, as a fourth dubbed the hack a ''very good idea''. However, while many thank the holiday-goer for the tip, not everyone was convinced. One sceptic, for instance, thought the crew would have an issue with the DIY screen. ''wait until air hostess come and ask you to remove it.'' A fellow sceptic thought: ''Case will just get more loose and you will have to throw it away.''
