Ex-CM Vijay Rupani's identity confirmed at crash site, body to be taken to Rajkot
Three days after the catastrophic plane crash, the body of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has been identified at the plane crash site after DNA testing.
A large team of forensic experts have been working around the clock to identify the bodies by matching the DNA of the deceased with samples collected from their relatives.
The confirmation of Vijay Rupani's identification was announced by Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi while speaking to the media this morning.
The last rites of Vijay Rupani will be done in Rajkot, where his family will decide on the cremation procedure.
Rishikesh Patel, Gujarat Health Minister, speaking to IANS, said the state government will facilitate all the arrangements after the family decides on the funeral proceedings.
'Gujarat CM Bhupendrabhai Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited late Vijaybhai Rupani ji's residence today and told the family members that his DNA has been confirmed. His family will take call on last rites and final stage preparations for cremation. After consultation with them, all arrangements will be done,' he said.
Reenaben Patel, a legislator, also confirmed that Vijay Rupani's body will be taken to Rajkot, where a lot of well-wishers and supporters of the former CM have been waiting to pay their tributes and bid a final goodbye.
Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was onboard the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI171 from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, that crashed minutes after take-off, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Only one passenger had a miraculous escape from the flight, while all others were killed.
Former CM was flying to London to meet his wife and daughter.
Notably, the DNA-matching is a complex medical and legal process and involves layers of verification. It's only after an elaborate set of tests and confirmation of DNA samples, families are called up and asked to collect the bodies of their loved ones. In some cases, the analysis is repeated due to insufficient DNA material. The identification process takes up to 72 hours, depending on the condition of the remains.

Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy

Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline. As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.

Three days after an Air India flight bound for London crashed in Ahmedabad, authorities have identified 47 victims through DNA testing. Of these, 24 bodies have been handed over to their families, according to an official statement issued on Sunday. 'We have established contact with the next of kin/relatives of all passengers and crew members, expressing our condolences and helping them with the next steps. Over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by our teams on the ground,' Air India said in a statement on social media site X. 'Every affected family in Ahmedabad has been assigned at least one caregiver by Air India. Air India is working closely with other Tata Group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of those deceased, which remains our number one priority,' the airline added. As of 14 June, Air India reported that it had completed safety checks on nine of its Boeing 787 aircraft and aimed to finish inspections on the remaining 24 within the timeline set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Air India also announced an interim payment of ₹25 lakh, approximately £21,000, to each family of the deceased and the lone survivor. This is in addition to the ₹1 crore (approximately £85,000) support announced earlier by Tata Sons.
