Intrepid traveller chronicles 7,000km solo ride in new book
KUALA LUMPUR : In intense heat – some 52°C! – with his water nearly gone, he arrived at what was supposed to be a rest stop – only to find it had been reduced to ruins.
This is among the most harrowing moments Zahariz Khuzaimah faced while crossing the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China, during a 7,000km cycling expedition across three countries.
'On the paper map, a small town was marked – but when I got there, it no longer existed. It had been destroyed.
'My water had run out, and the temperature reached 52°C. I felt like I was close to death but, fortunately, I was rescued by Chinese soldiers,' he told Bernama during the launch of 'Dengan Basikal Aku Merentas Benua Asia' ('With a Bicycle, I Crossed the Asian Continent') recently.
That terrifying episode is one of the compelling chapters in his debut book, written over six months and based on his travel diary from around 15 years ago.
The 287-page book documents the first year of Zahariz's adventure in 2010, when he left his job as a lecturer to explore China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, armed with nothing but a bicycle and courage.

Zahariz, who is known for his vlogs and short online documentaries on his adventures, said the book was written to provide more detailed stories that couldn't be fully shared through videos.
'Many people already know the general story from YouTube, but I couldn't tell everything in the videos. In this book, I can share much more; through writing, readers can take their time and truly immerse themselves,' he said.
Beyond the physical and emotional trials, the book captures heartwarming human stories: interactions with Muslim communities in rural China; a humorous moment when he was offered a marriage proposal by a local family; and the profound loneliness of being on his own in a foreign land.
He hopes to publish a second volume in the future, sharing stories from over a decade of travel to remote parts of the world, including the Arctic regions covering Iceland, Scotland, Sweden and Norway.
'I hope my book will inspire those who are searching for the meaning of life, or who have thought about breaking free from their routine and daring themselves to go where they never imagined,' Zahariz added.
'Dengan Basikal Aku…' is priced at RM62 and can be purchased by contacting Zahariz via his website, or on Facebook or Instagram. Also check out his videos on YouTube.

DBKL ordered to open Padang Merbok gates for public recreational use
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall has received instructions to open Padang Merbok's gates to the public as a recreational space for families and communities. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced this directive through a Facebook post today following her personal visit to the historic field. 'I do not agree with such an action,' she stated regarding the area's previous closure to public access. Dr Zaliha emphasised that Padang Merbok's historical significance should be fully utilised for public leisure activities. She called on DBKL to upgrade basic infrastructure including lighting systems and public toilets to better serve visitors. The minister also urged DBKL to organise suitable programmes to revitalise Padang Merbok for more structured utilisation. Additionally she suggested establishing a café as a new attraction to draw more visitors to the area. 'DBKL has been asked to review these matters and present them to me soon,' she added. This initiative aligns with the CHASE City vision that promotes the Healthy City concept for Kuala Lumpur. Padang Merbok is positioned to become one of Kuala Lumpur's key recreational landmarks through these improvements. – Bernama

VM2026 Promotional Efforts Focus On High-Value Tourists, Says Tiong
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will continue to focus its advertising and promotional efforts on attracting high-value tourists while maintaining initiatives for volume tourism under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China were inaccurate, stressing that efforts to attract international visitors also involved various other countries. He added that a comparison of foreign tourist arrivals between January and July 2024 and 2025 for 10 countries showed a significant increase. 'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5 per cent to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2 per cent to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6 per cent to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6 per cent rise to 807,664 from 638,109. 'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry. Tiong said all advertising and promotional efforts for VM2026 had been strategically planned and implemented across major markets, despite a lack of allocation. In this regard, he urged all parties, including Members of Parliament, to support efforts to promote the country's tourism and refrain from politicising or sensationalising the initiative. At the same time, he said the Ministry of Arts, Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) continued to focus on all tourism segments, including Muslim-friendly tourism, which offered significant potential. He said MOTAC, through the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), was committed to developing and promoting Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH), highlighting Quran-based tourism with main attractions such as the Nasyrul Quran Complex in Putrajaya and Yayasan Restu in Shah Alam, Selangor.
