Michigan State is a two-time national champion. It won its first title in 1979 under legendary coach Jud Heathcote and a Magic Johnson-led team. The Spartans won it all again in 2000, with Mateen Cleeves and Morris Peterson leading the way in a win over Florida.
Michigan State also finished as a national runner-up in 2009, when it lost to North Carolina in a championship game played at Ford Field in Detroit.
The Spartans have made 38 NCAA Tournament appearances and have the sixth-most Final Four appearances with 10 (1957, 1979, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2019). Michigan State has reached the Sweet 16 on 21 occasions, including in 2023.
Michigan State has posted a 73-36 record in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans have advanced past either the First Four or First Round each of the last three years.
FanDuel Sportsbook projects Michigan State as a 16.5-point favorite. The over/under is set at 152.5.
This is the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
The Spartans are led by senior guard Jaden Akins and freshman guard Jase Richardson, who average 12.7 and 12 points per game, respectively.
Senior guard Rafael Pinzon paces the Bulldogs at 18.5 points per game while fellow senior guard Earl Timberlake averages 15.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest.

EAST LANSING – Jonathan Smith wrapped up Michigan State football's preseason camp in the early afternoon. The second-year coach turned the page by naming his captains a few hours later. Coach Jonathan Smith announced via social media Monday, Aug. 18, that junior starting quarterback Aidan Chiles was among the team's captains for the second straight season, along with linebacker Jordan Hall, center Matt Gulbin, defensive end Quindarius Dunnigan and linebacker Sam Edwards. Chiles, who transferred to MSU with Smith's hiring from Oregon State before last season, is the first Spartan to serve as team's captain in consecutive years since Payton Thorne and Xavier Henderson did it in 2021 and 2022. MSU went 5-7 in Chiles' debut in 2024, in which the California native completed 59% of his throws (192-of-323 passing) for 2,415 yards with 13 touchdowns and ran 97 times for 225 yards and three more scores. Hall, a junior from Virginia, emerged as defensive leader last season, finishing with 24 tackles and two pass break-ups. Edwards is a sixth-year senior from Williamston. Fifth-year senior Gulbin is a transfer from Wake Forest who arrived in January, while Dunnigan is in his second year at MSU and seventh year of college football after beginning his career at Middle Tennessee State. Alabama transfer wins starting QB job for Michigan State football opponent Boston College
Michigan State football will be welcoming in Boston College to East Lansing this season, a return game after the Spartans made the trip to Chestnut Hill a year ago. For the return game in East Lansing, where the Spartans will look to gain revenge against the Eagles, there will be a new signal caller. Last year, the Spartans had to try and contain Thomas Castellanos, but after his departure to Florida State, head coach Bill O'Brien was tasked with naming a new starting quarterback. The battle was shaking out between returning senior, and former FIU transfer, Grayson James and Alabama transfer Dylan Lonergan, who is a redshirt sophomore. At the conclusion of the battle, with the team preparing for a game against Fordham, it was the Alabama transfer prevailing, earning the starting spot for Boston College. Josh Pate shares his thoughts on the reports that the Big Ten is pitching an expanded College Football Playoff field that would guarantee a handful of automatic bids for the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12. View more Video Transcript The Big Ten has found it necessary to, uh, do what they call socializing a new format of the playoff, and what is this format? Well, depending on who you listen to, it is either a 24 or a 2018 playoff format. Uh, and for my visual learners out there, the fine folks over at Reddit CFB actually put together a graphic of what a 2018 playoff or a 2014 playoff, I guess, would have looked like last year. It's 28, right, Jesse? Yeah, that's a 2018 playoff. You know, because that's what we need in college football. It's OK, your audio didn't stop working. I'm just I was at a loss for words a long time ago. And when you put the visual in front of me like this, it is very shocking. You know, to suggest Alabama's playing a game at Army in December, because we need to see that to crown a champion. So I need to say something, and I'm gonna try and be respectful about it because at the end of the day, we all have opinions on sports, and it's not the end of the world. We can go our separate ways, or we can agree to disagree and go the similar way and go to lunch, meet together. If you think that's good for college football, you and I don't see the same sport the same way. We're not looking through the same worldview magnifying glass lens at college football, um. This wouldn't even be awesome as a standalone product, much less awesome attached to the regular season because obviously of what it does to the regular season. There are some people out there, they're not stupid people. You know, remember Memaw's age-old axiom that casual people never say smart things. How, how did she word this? Casual people. Smart people can't say casual things. Casual people never say smart things, so there are some smart people who could look at that and they could say, oh, who says no to more football? The same people who like having money, but they say no to endlessly printing money, because when you endlessly print money, you devalue the money. When you love football, but then you play endless amounts of football, especially in consequence-type situations like playoff spots being on the line, you devalue the actual regular season of football. And there happen to be some of us who believe that the regular season of college football is the best thing about college football. Many people think that. So when you suggest that we ought to play 37 playoff games at the end just because it's more games, that's dumb. Close
