Omani-Saudi forum explores ways to enhance knowledge cooperation
The forum's opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation
(MoHERI). It serves as a strategic platform to enhance knowledge cooperation and expertise exchange between the two brotherly countries.
The forum aims to establish partnerships between higher education institutions in Oman and their counterparts in Saudi Arabia, strengthen scientific research collaboration through joint research programmes and researcher exchanges, promote student and academic exchanges, and encourage the establishment of research and development centres.
Dr Maryam al Nabhani, Director-General of Private Universities and Colleges, emphasised the forum's importance, stating: "This forum builds on the longstanding fraternal relations between Oman and Saudi Arabia and serves as a strategic platform to foster academic cooperation and the exchange of expertise. It aims to support institutional twinning between universities in both countries, enhance joint research programmes, promote academic and student exchange, and encourage the establishment of research and development centres." She added that the forum will focus on key topics such as entrepreneurial universities in the Gulf, the role of the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions in shaping smart campuses, and mechanisms for boosting research and innovation cooperation.
Additionally, the forum seeks to boost joint investments in education, scientific research and innovation while activating communication channels between intellectual, educational, and research institutions. These efforts contribute to supporting the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and Saudi Vision 2030.
From the Saudi side, Dr Bassam bin Abdullah al Bassam, Secretary-General, Council of Universities' Affairs, extended his gratitude to Oman for hosting the forum. "This forum is a testament to the strong fraternal ties between our two countries and serves as a catalyst for academic cooperation and knowledge exchange among educational institutions. It provides a valuable opportunity to share experiences and elevate the quality of education across the GCC," he stated.
He added that institutions of higher learning are vital hubs for knowledge production, innovation, and talent development, playing a central role in addressing national and global challenges. "This meeting is an essential step toward deeper academic and research collaboration and will pave the way for future joint initiatives," he said.
Dr Al Bassam urged participants to make the most of this opportunity by establishing strong networks that support ongoing cooperation and contribute to national development goals.
The forum is expected to produce actionable recommendations to support the development of entrepreneurial universities that are integrated with public and private sectors. Discussions will also explore curriculum development, academic accreditation, technical education and open learning. A particular emphasis will be placed on increasing Gulf visibility in international academic conferences and promoting co-authored research publications.
The event includes several dialogue sessions focusing on challenges and opportunities in building leading universities in GCC countries, highlighting the role of the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions in supporting education, learning, and smart campuses, as well as cooperation in scientific research and innovation. The forum features participation from nearly 70 Saudi universities, several research centres, and all public and private higher education institutions in Oman.

Mango projects in Al Batinah South bolster food security
BARKA: Mango cultivation and production projects in the wilayats of Barka and Al Musannah in Al Batinah South Governorate are vital initiatives that bolster food security, increase local production, provide promising investment opportunities and reduce reliance on imports. These projects also have the potential for future export to foreign markets, which enhances the competitiveness of Omani products in regional and global markets. Over 80 projects within the food security portfolio are being implemented in the governorate. Their products vary and they span vast areas across the governorate's wilayats. The projects are under the continuous supervision and follow-up of the Directorate-General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Al Batinah South Governorate. This is to overcome difficulties and address challenges that may arise during the implementation stages and ensure work proceeds according to the planned schedules. These projects aim to plant over 35,000 mango seedlings of various varieties on an area of 373 acres in the wilayats of Barka and Al Musannah. The planting will be carried out in separate batches to ensure the highest success rates. The expected production capacity upon project completion and the start of commercial production will reach 3,382 tonnes annually. Eng Amer bin Humood al Shebli, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Al Batinah South Governorate, stated: 'The mango projects in Barka and Al Musannah come within the framework of the Ministry's efforts to diversify agricultural production and enhance the national food security system. This is achieved by utilising natural resources, adopting modern farming methods that ensure sustainable and high-quality production; and making the best use of available resources'. He also said that in the next phase, the Ministry is working to expand the introduction of new mango varieties known for their high quality and excellent productivity. It will also focus on research and development programmes to improve production and enhance the efficiency of farmers and workers in this field through continuous training. The Ministry is also placing great importance on opening diverse marketing channels, whether in local markets or through agricultural exhibitions and events, to ensure the long-term continuity and viability of these projects. — ONA

Digitalisation driving growth of SMEs in Oman
Muscat – Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Oman are undergoing a rapid shift towards digitalisation, with experts stressing that innovation and technology adoption are becoming essential for growth and competitiveness in both local and international markets. Digital tools are enabling SMEs to cut costs, improve efficiency, and expand their reach without heavy investment in traditional infrastructure. From artificial intelligence (AI) to e-commerce platforms, businesses are leveraging new technologies to adapt to fast-changing customer needs and open new avenues for expansion. Saeed bin Jumaa al Salti, a digital transformation consultant, said digitalisation is no longer just about introducing technology but about 'a comprehensive transformation to improve operations, expand markets, and achieve continuous innovation'. He added that technologies such as AI, big data analytics, and cloud services allow SMEs to enter new markets with flexibility and speed, while enhancing decision-making and service delivery. 'SMEs can now expand their business locally and internationally without the need for massive investments in infrastructure,' Salti said. 'This creates opportunities for growth that were previously limited to large enterprises.' Maha bint Mohammed al Habsi Maha bint Mohammed al Habsi, an artificial intelligence trainer, noted that emerging technologies are now essential for SMEs aiming to grow and compete globally. 'AI, cloud computing, blockchain, and the Internet of Things are essential tools for enabling SMEs to achieve sustainable growth,' she said. 'This is no longer a luxury but a necessity in an economy that demands flexibility and efficiency.' Citing a study, Habsi said AI adoption in Oman's industrial sector has already improved productivity, inventory management, and resource allocation. She added that digital platforms are allowing even small Omani startups to export to markets in Europe and Asia. However, challenges remain. Ishaq bin Hilal al Sharyani, a specialist in training entrepreneurs, pointed out that limited funding, a shortage of digital expertise, and resistance to change continue to slow digital adoption. 'Cybersecurity and data protection also remain pressing concerns,' he said. He recommended that SMEs invest in staff training, collaborate with technology providers, and benefit from government programmes designed to support entrepreneurship and innovation. Legal advisor Mazen bin Salem al Zaidi highlighted that recent reforms in commercial dispute resolution have also helped SMEs. Simplified procedures for handling rental, labour, and contracting disputes are easing the legal burden on smaller businesses, he said, while ongoing government support reflects the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 to diversify income sources and strengthen the SME sector's role in the national economy. Experts agreed that digitalisation represents both an opportunity and a necessity for SMEs. By embracing innovation, these enterprises can not only survive but also can thrive in a competitive global economy.
