Dassanayake back as US head coach
Former Sri Lanka and Canada international Pubudu Dassanayake has returned as coach of the U.S. men's team, the country's cricket board said on Wednesday.
Dassanayake, who succeeds former Australia batsman Stuart Law in the role, previously coached the side between 2016-2019 when they earned their One Day International (ODI) status.
"I'm proud of what we accomplished during my previous time here, and I see tremendous potential in this group to reach even greater heights," the former Nepal and Canada coach said in a USA Cricket statement.
"I look forward to working closely with the players and staff to continue building something meaningful for USA Cricket."
The U.S. co-hosted the Twenty20 World Cup with West Indies last year, stunning heavyweights Pakistan and making the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
"Pubudu is joining the organization at a pivotal time," USA Cricket Chief Executive Johnathan Atkeison said.
"Following the momentum of 2024, we are now focused on strong performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup and qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup."
"With his experience and vision, we believe Pubudu can help us achieve these goals."
Dassanayake, 52, played 11 tests for Sri Lanka in the mid-1990s before moving to Canada and becoming captain of the team. REUTERS

Coventry City's Haji Wright is the only player among the forwards with more than four senior national team caps, with 15 appearances for the United States. Boxing-Double Olympic champion Lomachenko announces retirement
Ukraine's double Olympic gold medallist and three-weight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko announced his retirement from boxing on Thursday at the age of 37 and more than a year after his last fight. Lomachenko beat Australian George Kambosos Jr with an 11th round stoppage in Perth last May to claim the vacant IBF lightweight belt. The 2008 featherweight and 2012 lightweight Olympic champion wraps up his professional career with a record of 18 wins and three defeats, with 12 knockouts, after an amateur record of 396 wins and only one defeat. He was unified lightweight champion and also won world titles as a featherweight and super-featherweight. "I'm grateful for every victory and every defeat both in the ring and in life," Lomachenko said in a video message on social media. "I'm thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I've gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory, not just in the ring but in overcoming their old self." Sabalenka's power was too much for the defending champion, who was looking to become the first female player in the Open era since 1968 to win four consecutive titles in Paris. The top seed will play either France's wildcard Lois Boisson or second seed American Coco Gauff in Saturday's showcase match. "Honestly, it feels incredible but I understand the job is not done yet. I'm just thrilled today with this win and the atmosphere," Sabalenka said. "She's the toughest opponent, especially on clay, especially at Roland Garros. It was a tough match it was a tricky match but I managed." Sabalenka, in her second French open semi-final and seeking her first title in Paris, powered into a 3-0 lead, twice breaking the Pole. She gradually, however, found her range and precision, countering Sabalenka's raw power with superb ball placement and levelled when her opponent double-faulted on break point. The Belarusian was furious, angrily shouting to her team in the box, before overrunning her opponent in the tiebreak. The pair traded breaks at the start of the second set before Swiatek earned another to level the match. But Sabalenka again broke the 24-year-old world number five at the start of the third to take control and she powered through the decider as the Pole ran out of steam. "It could not be more perfect than that," Sabalenka said of her third set performance. "I'm super proud right now, I'm glad I found my serve (again in the third set)."
