The Grateful Dead Have Missed No. 1 By One Space Several Times This Year
Dave's Picks Volume 54: Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD - 3/26/73 opens at No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart. Luminate reports that the release sold a little more than 19,000 copies in its first tracking frame.
That sum, while impressive, wasn't enough to pose real competition when compared to Skeleta by Ghost. That new release launches with just under 77,000 pure purchases, easily securing the No. 1 spot on Billboard's list of the top-selling full-lengths and EPs in the country.
The Grateful Dead surely doesn't mind landing at No. 2. In fact, it's something the band is used to at this point.
Dave's Picks Volume 54 is the second title by the Grateful Dead to stall at No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart in 2025. Just a few months ago in February, Dave's Picks Volume 53: Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, OH - 10/2/76 also reached the same position. It spent just one frame at No. 2 before disappearing — a showing that's not uncommon for Grateful Dead releases. The band often issues these archival live sets in limited quantities that sell extremely well out of the gate and then vanish from Billboard's rosters within a matter of days.
The band has now debuted three projects on the Top Album Sales chart in 2025 alone. In April, between the two Dave's Picks entries, Beacon Theatre, New York, NY - 6/14/76 also appeared on the tally. It, too, stuck around for just one frame, but it peaked at a much lower No. 27.
Throughout the years, the Grateful Dead has collected 46 top 10 placements on the Top Album Sales chart, surely one of the most impressive runs of bestsellers among all acts. Just one of those sets has reached the summit. A milestone 10, including the group's latest offering, have missed the mark by a single rung.

The outspoken Republican co-host of 'The View' took to social media on Thursday to urge the Grammy-winning disco queen to reject her induction into the 2025 class of Kennedy Center Honorees due to the MAGA leader's polarizing views and overhauling of the institution's board. Gaynor was one of five honorees unveiled Wednesday by Trump, who also announced that he'll host the Dec. 7 induction ceremony in Washington, D.C. The other honorees announced were George Strait, Michael Crawford, KISS and Sylvester Stallone. Navarro highlighted Gaynor's diehard LGBTQ+ following as reason enough for her to not accept the prestigious accolade, considering the president's anti-trans and anti-community stances that have drawn widespread criticism. 'A few years ago, I got to briefly meet @gloriagaynor at a concert in Miami,' Navarro wrote on Instagram Thursday morning. 'She gifted me a keychain that belted out 'I Will Survive,' when you pressed it. Let's just say, during [the] first Trump term, I pressed it til it ran out of batteries. Yesterday, Trump announced he picked her to receive a Kennedy Center Honor, which he plans to host.' Calling the singer 'a goddess' who 'deserves all the flowers that come her way,' Navarro stressed that she believes Gaynor should turn down the award. 'I wish she wouldn't accept an award from the hands of a man who has attacked the rights and history of women, people of color and LGBTQ,' she continued. 'The gay community in particular, helped turn her signature song into an anthem.' Navarro concluded her post by calling Trump 'a stain on the prestige and significance of the [Kennedy Center Honors],' and urged the 81-year-old singer once again: 'Don't do it, Gloria!'

Read the Script to One of the Best Episodes of ‘Andor' and Experience Greatness
One of the few rare issues with Andor being as good as it is is that we're not getting more of it, in any format—but one that especially stings is that we came so close to being able to look at the scripts behind the smash-hit Star Wars series. We were on the verge of greatness, as a certain Imperial director would've put it, in 2023 when Tony Gilroy and Lucasfilm announced that season one's scripts would be published online, only for them to never arrive. Gilroy gave us an incredibly valid reason earlier this year—to avoid the scripts being fed into generative AI models—dashing our hopes that we'd ever similarly see the scripts for the then-upcoming season 2 released either. But at least on that front, there's a tiny glimmer of hope. As part of its For Your Consideration campaign effort in the upcoming TV awards season (which, of course, includes Andor and its 14 Emmy nominations), Disney's official FYC website has been updated to include a post-final production script for Andor season 2 episode 9, 'Welcome to the Rebellion', by Dan Gilroy. The episode, itself nominated in the Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series category at next month's 77th Emmys, climaxes the third act of Andor season 2, and sees Cassian assist Mon Mothma's escape from Coruscant after she delivers a damning speech in the Imperial Senate over Palpatine's role in the Ghorman Massacre. Even though we've had plenty of opportunity to watch and revisit the episode itself, reading the script offers some fascinating insight into the creative process behind Andor, and the chance to see what emotive beats and intent came from Gilroy's writing, and what flourished or was tweaked naturally through the cast's performance and interpretation of it. It's also just a remarkable reading experience too, one that captures the tension that would ultimately sizzle on screen, with a flow and pacing that, even if you're not used to reading a shooting script, glides by with a keen slickness. It's not surprising that, even among an extremely strong crop of scripts to pick from in season 2, this is the one that earned Andor the nomination. But as good as it is, it now makes Lucasfilm and Gilroy's decision to stop the release of the rest of the Andor scripts all the more heartbreaking. It would be absolutely incredible that now the show is complete to be able to either freely peruse or even buy a coffee table book collecting the 24 scripts in a single place and re-experience the journey from a perspective that we rarely get for Star Wars material. New doc examines the fallout from the curious case of Jussie Smollett, featuring an interview with the subject himself
Jussie Smollett, the former star of 'Empire,' has maintained that his account of being attacked in an alleged hate crime in 2019 has never changed, yet questions remain. The upcoming documentary 'The Truth About Jussie Smollett?' features interviews with police, lawyers and officials familiar with Smollett's case, as well as journalists and 'investigators who claim to have uncovered new evidence,' according to a synopsis of the project. Smollett himself also appears. The placement of the question mark in the title of the film, from the producers of 'The Tinder Swindler,' invites the 'audience to decide for themselves who is telling' the truth. The case began early on January 29, 2019, when Smollett told police he was attacked near his Chicago apartment by two men shouting racial and homophobic slurs at him. Smollett said the men placed a noose around his neck and poured an unknown chemical substance on him, according to the Chicago Police Department at the time. Authorities initially investigated the incident as a hate crime. Initial shock and sympathy turned to skepticism as emerging details led to public doubt about the actor's claims. It also sent his career into a spiral. From there, the case began its circuitous legal journey, and Smollett went from being indicted on 16 counts of disorderly conduct in March 2019, to those charges being dropped shortly thereafter (Smollett pleaded not guilty to the charges), to again being indicted by a grand jury the following year. Smollett was eventually found guilty in December 2021 of making false police reports to Chicago officers, but last year, that conviction was overturned, with the Illinois Supreme Court citing prosecutorial issues. In an interview with Variety published this week, Smollett spoke of his public vilification. 'Every single other person's story has changed multiple times. Mine has never,' Smollett said. 'I saw firsthand how narratives are built. I saw firsthand the way that someone can take the exact opposite of who you are and literally sell it,' 'The Truth About Jussie Smollett?' will premiere globally on Aug. 22 on Netflix.
