Balanagar custard apple inches closer to GI tag

HYDERABAD: Farmers and officials on Monday submitted an application seeking the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the world-famous Balanagar custard apple, marking the 19th GI application from Telangana.
The application was filed by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha of Resolute4IP on behalf of three key farmer-based organisations — Pomal Farmer Producer Company Ltd, Balanagar Farmer Producer Company Ltd, and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society — with support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
The Balanagar custard apple is renowned for its thick rind, high pulp content, minimal seeds, naturally sweet flavour, and extended shelf life — characteristics that set it apart from other varieties and make it ideal for both fresh consumption and industrial use.
This move places the Balanagar variety as the fourth custard apple in India to seek or obtain a GI tag, alongside Beed custard apple (Maharashtra), Seoni sitaphal (Madhya Pradesh), and Kanker custard apple (Chhattisgarh).
'This GI initiative underscores how formal recognition can create value at the grassroots level while reinforcing Telangana's position as a hub for high-quality, origin-linked produce,' said Subhajit Saha, expressing gratitude for the support extended by Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTGHU).
He added that the state is preparing to file six to eight additional GI applications for products in the handicrafts and horticulture sectors in the coming days.
SKLTGHU V-C Danda Raji Reddy, said the university is committed to preserving Telangana's heritage horticultural crops and that further GI applications will be filed after thorough field investigations and consultations with farmers.

The products displayed ranged from Maheshwari and Kanjivaram sarees, Batik prints, and block print bedsheets, to readymade garments, woollen shawls, and organic food K V, Chairman shared his grassroots experience in the handloom sector, underscoring NABARD's transformative role. He elaborated on the various initiatives undertaken by NABARD, particularly the reforms in cooperative banks and regional rural banks. These reforms include technology-driven interventions, digitization of cooperatives, and streamlining the credit disbursement process to make financial access more efficient for artisans and emphasized that handloom is not merely a craft but a narrative—one that can be woven with themes of sustainability, circularity, and cultural richness. NABARD's support for Geographical Indication (GI) tagging, both in the pre-registration and post-registration phases, was highlighted as a significant value addition to handloom products. He also spoke about the Off-Farm Producer Organization (OFPO) initiative and NABARD's commitment to working in challenging regions, promoting market-based solutions, building capacity, and scaling production with intent and purpose.M. Beena expressed her appreciation for NABARD's efforts in convening a diverse group of stakeholders, including weavers, artisans, bankers, government agencies, regulators, and NGOs—entities that often operate in isolation. She stressed that handloom is not just a heritage but a living heritage, pointing to the fact that India has over 35.22 lakh handloom workers, including 26.73 lakh weavers and 8.48 lakh allied workers. More than 70 percent of these workers are women, with the proportion rising to 74.5 percent in rural areas. Of the 31.45 lakh households engaged in handloom activities, 88.7 percent are in rural regions. A significant 73.2 percent of handloom workers operate independently, while only 6.3 percent are part of cooperative societies, and 19.4 percent work under master emphasized the growing relevance of handloom in the era of conscious consumption, slow fashion, and ethical production, which aligns with global movements toward reduced carbon footprints. She expressed delight at the overwhelming response to Handloom Day from stakeholders, NABARD, universities, and other NABARD on its initiatives in the GI sector and support for non-farmer producer companies, she called for greater collaboration across the sector between the GoI and NABARD. She emphasised that the journey of the weaver to the entrepreneur and to exporter needs support by various stakeholders. India to digitally record tribal heritage to push social, economic inclusion

The Centre is planning to digitally archive Indian tribes' heritage to develop the market for their products and cultural expressions, Vivek Bharadwaj, the secretary of the ministry of panchayati raj, told Mint in an interview. The government has executed a pilot in Jharkhand and will begin documentation in Chhattisgarh in August. The project will be expanded to other states covered under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Telangana—home to approximately 350 recognized scheduled tribes (STs). The idea is to help tribals derive economic value through Geographical Indication (GI) tagging and domestic and global market linkages, Bharadwaj added. A GI tag offers legal safeguards against fake products by protecting the unique identity, quality and reputation of products linked to certain geographical locations. The project will also record their ecological knowledge, crafts, games, festivals, rituals, cuisines, beverages, folk stories, motifs, agricultural practices, institutions, monuments, artefacts, herbal medicines and traditional attire. The government may incorporate this documentation in policymaking, which will help tribals achieve social and economic upliftment, said a volunteer associated with the project, on the condition of anonymity. 'The Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, also known as PESA, empowers the tribal communities to preserve their culture and heritage. Today, this heritage is getting lost due to the winds of change blowing in the tribal areas. It is therefore imperative to facilitate tribal communities to document their culture and traditions," Bharadwaj said. Bharadwaj added that the central government is already conducting a pilot project—since 26 January—in Jharkhand under the Hamari Parampara, Hamari Virasat (our tradition, our heritage) initiative. Cultural preservation The government will begin documentation efforts in Chhattisgarh—home to a rich diversity of tribal communities, many of whom have unique traditions, languages, and lifestyles—in August. Around 30% of the state's total population of 25.5 million, according to the 2011 census, belongs to STs, making it one of the most tribal-dominated states in India. There are around 42 recognized scheduled tribes in the state, broadly categorized into major tribes and minor tribes. The popular tribes are Gond, Baiga, Maria, Halba, Oraon and Munda. With more than 5,000 PESA gram panchayats, Chhattisgarh has great potential to become a role model in documenting and conserving the rich tribal heritage of India, Bharadwaj explained. The government will also develop a state-of-the-art Central Heritage Portal for documentation, archival, and dissemination of tribal cultural data. This would offer a comprehensive database accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public. 'The initiative will go a long way in promoting handicrafts of the tribal community. Currently, we are marketing around half a dozen products of the tribal communities based out of Chhattisgarh through Tribes India retail outlet," said P.M. Khadane, regional manager, Chhattisgarh regional office of Tribal Co-Operative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd, ministry of tribal affairs. "We feel that many of the products as well as herbal medicines can be patented after the documentation. Also, folk songs can be copyrighted to help communities derive economic and cultural benefits," said Vijay Kuzur, a social activist and associated with the Hamari Parampara, Hamari Virasat programme in Jharkhand. Additionally, documentation helps in mapping the area, so in case of any displacement, the tribes would be entitled to appropriate compensation. The effort assumes significance as India has either lost or is on the verge of losing many tribes and tribal languages to modernization, according to experts. "For example, Ghotul practice—a cultural academy where tribal youth are shaped into custodians of their heritage, trained in values, arts, and communal life under the guidance of elders—prevalent among Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh's Gond and Muria communities doesn't exist anymore," said Delhi University professor Jitendra Meena who authored the book Rashtra Nirman Mein Aadiwasi (Tribes in Nation-Building).

SALEM: Despite an application filed nearly three years ago, Salem's silver anklets are still awaiting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The delay is attributed to a lack of documentary evidence needed to establish the craft's antiquity and uniqueness. This is a significant hurdle, even though the city is one of India's largest hubs for silver anklet manufacturing. Manufacturers explain that while the craft has been practiced for generations, most units are small-scale and operated by artisans without formal education. C Sri Anandarajan, president of the Salem District Kolusu Manufacturers Kaivinai Sangam, notes, "Proper documentation of manufacture and sales does not exist because our business has never been formally recorded. The GI registry requires evidence that the product has existed in a specific geography for at least 25 years." Unlike gold, which has the BIS 916 hallmark, silver jewellery in India has no uniform quality standard. A GI tag would enforce standardisation and boost the reputation of Salem's silver anklets. Potential overseas markets include Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. "Currently, silver anklets made in Salem are exported via other states and lose their identity in the process. If the GI tag is granted, it would mandate quality benchmarks and enable Salem anklets to stand out distinctly in international markets," Anandarajan added. The absence of formal recognition has made the profession unattractive to younger generations. Senior manufacturers fear they might be the last generation in this field, with many artisans shifting to daily wage jobs like painting or working at petrol bunks. Salem is home to nearly 10,000 units involved in the silver anklet trade, employing around 1.15 lakh people, which includes 78% men and 22% women. The manufacturing process is spread across different localities, with each step handled by a specialised group. Over 15 types of silver anklets are made, including the unique 'Thalakkolusu', an anklet for infants. This special design loosens as a child grows, allowing it to be used for up to four years.
