Champaign Co. Sheriff increasing patrols to reduce speeding, improve road safety

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Sheriff's Office announced Monday morning that it will be joining a state-wide effort to increase traffic safety patrols.
Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said in a news release that more than 200 local law enforcement agencies — along with the Illinois State Police — will increase patrols for speeding and other traffic violations throughout the month of July.

'Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in careless and risky driving,' Heuerman said in the release. 'No matter how safe of a driver you think you may be, speeding is dangerous and reduces your time to react if something unexpected happens. Speed limits aren't a suggestion; they are the law.'
In the past seven months, the Sheriff's Office investigated 173 crashes — 51 of those crashes involved injuries. Heuerman added that five people died in three different fatal crashes.

During the speed limit enforcement campaign, Heuerman said there is an easy way to avoid a ticket: drive the speed limit. In urban areas without a posted speed limit, drivers should not drive over 30 mph; in a rural area, the speed limit is 55 mph.
The patrols will increase in Champaign County — and the state — from July 8 to July 31. The enforcement effort is a part of the 'Speeding Catches Up with You' campaign and supports IDOT's 'It's Not a Game' media campaign.

A perv substitute teacher had sex with an 11-year-old male student during 'play dates' at her house — then blamed the child, telling cops he made advances toward her first, Illinois authorities said. Disgraced sub Alley Bardfield, 34, also exchanged messages and explicit photos with the boy over SnapChat and sent him hundreds of dollars through CashApp over several months, a police statement alleges. The sixth-grade victim's mother discovered $700 in CashApp payments from Bardfield when she checked her son's phone after noticing his behavior had changed following a stayover at the teacher's house in Mount Zion, according to a sworn police statement obtained by WCIA. Macon County Jail The mom confronted her son, who told her he had unprotected sex with Bardfield, the document said. Bardfield, who pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault this past week, had been the boy's teacher at the Hope Academy public school in Decatur at the time of the abuse between 2023 and 2024, the outlet said. The substitute teacher invited the boy to multiple 'play dates' at her home in 2023 and then twice in March 2024, during which time the pair had two sexual encounters, according to a lawsuit filed by the child's parents and seen by WCIA. The 34-year-old woman faces up to 40 years in prison. WANDTV In a police interview, the disgraced educator claimed the child had made sexual advances toward her first the night they had sex, WICS reported. She was fired by Decatur Public Schools when the abuse came to light in April last year. The pervert appeared in court in Macon County on Thursday for a disposition hearing at which she reached a partial plea deal with prosecutors. Bardfield faces up to 40 years in prison, although the exact sentence has not been agreed upon yet. Predatory criminal sexual assault is punishable by up to 60 years in prison, but the state agreed to cap its recommended sentence for Bardfield to 40 years as part of the plea deal. She will be sentenced Sept. 25.

Rantoul man found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — A jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes on Wednesday before delivering a guilty verdict to a 39-year-old Rantoul man accused of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said the jury trial took place July 29 and 30. Family, friends gather to grieve train crash victim, honor him with balloon release Evidence presented in court indicated that the sexual abuse occurred between October 2021 and February 2022 in Rantoul. The Rantoul Police Department began to investigate Joshua Nibbe in April of 2022 after the child's mother had reported that her child had been sexually abused by Nibbe. The child was 11 at the time of disclosure, but the abuse had been going on since the child was 10 years old. The State's Attorney's Office filed criminal charges on June 22, 2022. Nibbe was arrested on June 29, 2022 and has been in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Center since. Predatory criminal sexual assault is a class X felony and carries between 6 to 60 years in prison. Since Nibbe was found guilty on two counts, Rietz said he will serve his sentences one after the other, rather than at the same time.
