‘We're not ready for tourists': Phuket eatery owner pleads for public toilets after messy incident

Malay Mail30-05-2025
PHUKET, May 30 — The owner of a floating restaurant in Rawai has urged local authorities to build more public toilets for tourists after catching foreign visitors defecating on his property.
According to Khaosod English, Pannatat Asawapitakchon said the issue has happened twice, most recently on May 22, when he witnessed a female tourist relieving herself outside his restaurant after closing hours. He confronted her and asked her to clean up the area. His social media post about the incident has since gone viral, drawing widespread support and calls for action.
'At first she didn't accept responsibility, but after talking for a while, she went to clean the spot where she had defecated. But it wasn't clean enough, so I had to clean it again myself. That's why I want to ask the relevant agencies about public restrooms – I'd like them to build restrooms in the Rawai Beach area,' he told the daily.
In his social media post, the owner explained that when his restaurant is open, tourists are welcome to use the restrooms, even if they are not dining there.
'But what happened at my restaurant shows we're not ready to efficiently accommodate tourists. I don't know if other business operators have experienced this,' he wrote.
He concluded his post with a simple request: 'I ask those involved to help solve this small problem. It's not urgent, but I'm raising the issue for future improvements. In the meantime, I'll probably have to keep cleaning up urine and faeces myself.'

Sea's sales top estimates as online shoppers keep spending

Shopee's second-quarter revenue rose 34% to US$3.8 billion. (Reuters pic) SINGAPORE : Sea Ltd's second-quarter sales beat analysts' estimates as more of Southeast Asia's consumers turn to online shopping for anything from iPhones to daily groceries. Revenue rose 38% to a record US$5.26 billion in the three months through June, the company said in a statement. Analysts estimated US$5 billion on average. Net income jumped to US$414.2 million from US$79.9 million a year earlier, but fell short of the US$444 million analysts predicted. Sea's American depositary receipts jumped as much as 20% after markets opened in New York today, their biggest intraday gain in nine months. The results assuage some concerns about the prospects of e-commerce arm Shopee. The region's top online retail platform is battling deep-pocketed global challengers including ByteDance Ltd's TikTok Shop and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's Lazada. Emerging players like Shein and PDD Holdings Inc's Temu are also looking to break into the emerging region of 675 million people where more and more shoppers are coming online. To boost its bottom line, Shopee has been steadily raising the commissions it charges merchants in various core markets by about a third since the start of last year. The hikes, which bring Shopee's fees above its rivals, show that Sea is confident it can attract and retain merchants, helped by a broad user base and well-established delivery services. Shopee's second-quarter revenue rose 34% to US$3.8 billion, thanks in part to surging commissions and ad revenue. Sea is also betting on new initiatives from digital finance to logistics to grow its dominance and convince investors of its growth potential. Its logistics arm SPX Express now handles the majority of Shopee's billions of parcels annually, while its finance arm – now known as Monee – increased sales 70% last quarter to US$882.8 million. Bookings at gaming division Garena rose 23%. 'In the past, cash flow from Sea's gaming arm Garena was used to grow Shopee and Monee, but now Shopee and Monee are in healthier capital positions,' Hussaini Saifee, an analyst at Maybank Securities, said before the results. 'Sea can now invest in further developing Garena which has also made a strong rebound over the last year and a half.'

Sabah committed to highest standards of tourist safety

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): Sabah remains firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of tourist safety, said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew. She gave the assurance in her welcome address at the Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and State agencies, chaired by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Dato' Sri Tiong King Sing, at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru here on Tuesday. 'On behalf of the State Government, I extend my sincere appreciation to MOTAC for its continuous support in strengthening Malaysia's tourism industry. With strong collaboration between MOTAC, the State Government and our enforcement agencies, I am confident that we can make Sabah not only one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but also one of the safest,' Liew said. She also thanked Tiong for his consistent concern over safety issues affecting Semporna in particular, adding: 'We believe we share the same commitment, and the progress we've made is aligned with the Federal Government. 'For us, ensuring a safe tourism environment is not just about protecting lives and prioritising well-being, but also about safeguarding Malaysia's reputation as a world-class travel destination. Your continued attention and commitment to this matter means a lot,' she said. Liew stressed that tourist safety is critical to maintaining the confidence of both domestic and international travellers, as well as potential investors. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging recent safety concerns involving accidents during scuba diving, snorkelling, and stand-up paddleboarding in marine and island areas, Liew said these highlight the need for stronger safety protocols, strict SOP compliance, and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. She said the State Government has strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring. Multilingual safety signage has also been installed at high-risk tourist locations, including the arrival halls of Tawau and Sandakan airports. Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, MOTAC Secretary-General Dato' Shaharudin Abu Sohot, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Norlija @ Norlijah Danin, Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai, Deputy Permanent Secretary I Mary Malangking, Sabah Parks Director Datuk Dr Maklarin Lakim, and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) CEO Julinus Jeffery Jimit, along with MOTAC delegations.
