PM Modi in Tamil Nadu: Gangaikonda Cholapuram decked up to welcome PM Modi; police tighten security ahead of visit
The village and the Brihadisvara Temple, situated along the Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway, have been decked up with flags and garlands to welcome the Prime Minister, who will participate in the valediction of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival marking the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola I.
Mr. Modi will release a commemorative coin in honour of the king, accepting a request made by R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust.
The king had built Gangaikonda Cholapuram along with the Brihadisvara Temple and the Cholagangam, a massive lake, after his victorious expedition to the Gangetic plains about 1,000 years ago.
Reaffirming the Chola capital's link to the river, Mr. Modi would hand over a pot of water brought from the river Ganga to the temple priests. 'The Prime Minister will hand over the pot brought from Varanasi to the Sivachariars of the temple to perform abishekam,' Mr. Komagan told The Hindu.
Heads of various Saivaite mutts in Tamil Nadu are also set to participate in the event. 'About 30 heads of Saivaite maths and sadhus will attend the event. A group of 44 oduvars will recite hymns from Thiruvasagam,' Mr. Komagan said.
The Prime Minister will inspect a thematic photo exhibition on 'Saiva siddhanta and Chola Temple Arts', put up by the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the temple. Music composer Ilaiyaraaja will perform a 20-minute concert in the presence of Mr. Modi.
Mr. Modi is also expected to go on a roadshow from the helipad, set up near the Cholagangam, or Ponneri, to the temple. The village and the Brihadisvara Temple have been under security blanket with the deployment of over 2,000 police personnel.
On Saturday (July 26, 2025), Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited the temple and reviewed the arrangements.

PM Modi, HM Shah Meet President Murmu At Rashtrapati Bhavan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday separately called on President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here. The meetings came just a day before the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament resumes on Monday. Taking to X, the Rashtrapati Bhavan posted: "Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." It shared pictures of PM Modi and President Murmu. Another post read: "Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." Details related to either of the meetings were not immediately available. The meetings came against the backdrop of heated exchanges witnessed in the Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision process in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the eastern state. PM Modi met President Murmu just a day after he said that the welfare of farmers, small industries, and youth remains the government's 'top priority' as the country stays on track to become the world's third-largest economy, even as US President Donald Trump announced that 25 per cent tariffs would be imposed on India from August 7. PM Modi reaffirmed the resilience of the Indian economy amid turbulence triggered by US tariff hikes, saying that the country must remain vigilant about its economic interests and adopt 'swadeshi' products. 'There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is going to become the third biggest economy in the world, and this is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned,' the Prime Minister said during a rally in Varanasi on Saturday. Earlier this week, Trump announced 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. He said India would also face an additional tariff penalty for buying Russian oil. The Parliament has seen little business since the Monsoon Session commenced on July 21.

Will Modi's new veshti strategy work down South?
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated August 11, 2025)It was a sublimely choreographed moment of political theatre, of the grandiose genre that has long been seen to befit the man. Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the ancient Brihadiswara Temple, holding a vessel of gangajal from Kashi, framed against the gopuram and the blue Tamil skies behind. That July 27 image from Gangaikonda Chozhapuram, tweeted by BJP leader H. Raja with the caption 'Living Gangai Kondan', went viral. The symbolism was thick, and hard to two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, beginning July 26, also brought the usual rain of inaugurations: infrastructure projects worth Rs 4,800 crore, including the expansion of the VO Chidambaranar Port, and a Rs 450-crore terminal at the airport. CULTURAL MESSAGING If all that is a necessary part of the script in the BJP's push for the 2026 assembly election, it was the cultural spectacle and messaging that dominated the debates. Modi released a commemorative coin in honour of Rajendra Chola I, listened to Odhuvar recitations of Shaivite hymns, and attended a spiritual concert by Ilaiyaraaja. Flanked by heads of prominent Shaivaite mutts, he described the Chola empire as a 'blueprint for Viksit Bharat', praising its maritime influence and administrative acumen as early examples of Indian hailed the gesture as a reclamation of Tamil legacy. Critics, however, saw it as a calculated attempt to reinterpret Tamil history through a Hindutva prism. 'If Rajendra Chola was hailed as Gangai Kondan, it was because he defeated rulers of the Gangetic plains, not because he brought Ganga water,' says political commentator Priyan. 'The ASI's refusal to accept the antiquity of Keezhadi reflects the BJP's actual views.'Actor-politician Vijay weaponised the visit against both the BJP and the DMK, calling the saffron gestures 'political drama', but saying the DMK long ignored the Chola record, of course, reveals a handsome harvesting of history by the latter. As CM in 2010, M. Karunanidhi led the grand millennium gala at Brihadiswara Temple. In 2022, M.K. Stalin made a state event out of Raja Raja Chola's birth anniversary. 'Those late to Tamil pride are free to speak,' quips a DMK elder. 'History knows who lit the lamp first.'Senior journalist Thuglak Ramesh defended the BJP on the charge of being motivated by political gain. 'It may appear to be a strategy to counter the perception that the BJP is alien to Tamil identity. But I have heard the PM genuinely engages with Tamil antiquity. This goes beyond political calculation—it reflects a sincere personal devotion,' he says this is belied by the fact that the BJP strategy in Tamil Nadu mirrors its approach in other states and social demographies, appropriating local or community icons to build cultural bridges. He feels Tamil Nadu's unique polity—grounded in linguistic rights, social justice and federalism—would defy such subsumption. 'People appreciate such gestures, but they will still ask tough questions: about flood relief, education funding, archaeological flashpoints, the Governor. Symbolism alone won't suffice.'
