American chess grandmaster Christopher Yoo has been provisionally suspended by the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) following a new harassment complaint. The 60-day suspension, which began on 9 May 2025, comes after a female player accused Yoo of misconduct during the Grenke Open tournament.
FIDE on Saturday issued a statement saying that the EDC has imposed a temporary suspension keeping in mind the serious nature of the complaint.
Yoo under investigation again
'The suspension stems from two separate complaints alleging violations of the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Code. Case 5/2025 (A), filed by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), and an additional recent complaint – whose details and complainant remain confidential due to the sensitive nature of the allegations – are both under investigation by the EDC.'

This isn't the first time Yoo has faced disciplinary action. In November 2024, the United States Chess Federation (USCF) banned him for one year after an outburst during the US Chess Championship. Yoo had stormed out of the playing hall after a loss, destroyed his scoresheet, and reportedly struck a videographer.
Following the incident, he was expelled from the tournament and banned from the Saint Louis Chess Club. Local police also filed a fourth-degree charge against him. The USCF added a five-year probation on top of the one-year suspension, lasting until 14 November 2030. However, the latest case has put him in more trouble.
Despite the US ban, Yoo recently played and won at the Sardinia World Chess Festival in Italy. International Arbiter Chris Bird pointed out the contradiction, questioning how Yoo was allowed to participate in a FIDE-rated event while under suspension. He said both FIDE and USCF had earlier agreed that the ban should apply globally.

Yoo secured a dominant victory at the Sardinia Chess Festival 2025, finishing with 7.5 points out of 9. Yoo remained undefeated throughout the event. He finished ahead of Ukrainian GM Ihor Samunenkov and Italian GM Lorenzo Lodici, who both shared second place with 7 points each.
Both complaints are still under review by the EDC, and the details of the most recent one are being kept private due to the sensitive nature of the allegations.

US citizen residing in Mumbai cheated of 2.7cr, sr bank mngr to be booked

Mumbai: After HC expressed shock over conduct of investigation officer, the state told the Bombay high court it will book a senior manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank in a case where an American citizen (75), who resides in Mumbai and is married to an Indian, was allegedly cheated of nearly Rs 2.7 crore by her relationship manager. Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad, on Aug 13, noted that police inspector Sachin Khondre, who registered the FIR narrating Elizabeth Iler's complaint, did not add Sainath Gharse as accused. Iler, retired professor of a New York university, sought direction to D N Nagar police to add IPC Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a banker) to the FIR and for speedy probe against relationship manager Radheya Waghole, his wife Bhavana and others involved. Her petition said she holds NRE and NRO accounts with Kotak Bank's JVPD branch. Waghole, having access to her finance details and foreign remittances, "manipulated" her into transferring substantial funds under the pretext of secure, bank-approved investments promising high returns. He introduced Bhavana as a financial adviser. They lured her into investing through their two companies. Iler was made to sign blank beneficiary owner forms and share OTPs and digital authorisations. Amounts were transferred to third party entities and their companies. Her advocate Himanshu Maratkar said as bank officials were involved, the section should have been invoked. The judges said, on perusal of the FIR's contents, prima facie Section 409 is attracted. Iler's complaint indicated a "deceptive role" played by Gharse. He convinced her that depositing the money with Waghole "involved no risk as he is his colleague." Prosecutor Shreekant Gavand said the IO was instructed by the law officer not to invoke Section 409. The zonal DCP concurred with the opinion. Hence, Gharse's name was not mentioned as an accused. "Our judicial conscience is shocked. While four long paragraphs of the complaint clearly indicate the role of Gharse, yet, he has not been added as an accused,'' the judges said. Gavand said while adding Section 409, Gharse will also be added as an accused. The judge disposed of Iler's petition but kept it on Sept 2, to report compliance of the directions. US Imposes Sanctions On ICC Officials For Targeting Israel; Netanyahu Praises Move

Last Updated: As part of the sanctions, the United States will freeze any assets the individuals may hold within U.S. jurisdiction. The US Department of State has announced new sanctions against four officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the court of targeting American and Israeli personnel. In a statement released Wednesday, the Department emphasised that the ICC poses a threat to the US and its allies. The move comes amid growing tensions between Washington and the Hague-based tribunal over its investigations into alleged war crimes involving American and Israeli personnel. The sanctions specifically target four individuals currently serving within the ICC,which include Judges Kimberly Prost and Nicolas Guillou, and Deputy Prosecutors Nazhat Shameen Khan and Mame Mandiaye Niang. Judge Kimberly Prost has been sanctioned for her role in authorising investigations into alleged war crimes committed by US personnel in Afghanistan. Judge Nicolas Guillou has been named for his involvement in issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Deputy Prosecutors Khan and Niang are accused of supporting what the State Department described as 'illegitimate ICC actions against Israel." As part of the sanctions, the US will freeze any assets the individuals may hold within US jurisdiction. In addition, their names have been reported to the Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The sanctions also extend to any property or financial interests in which the named individuals have a 50 percent or greater stake, either directly or indirectly, through partnerships or other entities. Such assets may also be subject to blocking under US law. Senator Marco Rubio stated in an official statement, 'The Court is a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the US and our close ally Israel." He also posted on X to allege ICC of disreagrding US's national sovereignity. The @IntlCrimCourt continues to disregard national sovereignty and facilitate lawfare through efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, and prosecute American and Israeli nationals. In response, I am sanctioning four additional ICC officials. We will continue to hold accountable…— Secretary Marco Rubio (@SecRubio) August 20, 2025 The sanctions were also praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the move a 'decisive act against a smear campaign of lies against the State of Israel." Although neither the US nor Israel is a member of the ICC, the court asserts jurisdiction over crimes committed in member states. This includes investigations involving citizens of non-member countries if the alleged crimes occurred on the territory of a member nation. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
