Russian Scientists Discover Ancient Whale Remains Beneath Retreating Glacier
Russian scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) have uncovered a significant concentration of ancient whale remains on Wilczek Island, part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, according to TV BRICS.
The discovery was made amid research on permafrost dynamics and glacial retreat, as reported by the official website of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
According to AARI researcher Nikita Demidov, satellite image analysis and on-site measurements showed that the island's glacial dome split into two sections in under 20 years, exposing several square kilometres of marine terrace.
This newly revealed area contains numerous well-preserved whale skeletons, some partially thawing at the glacier's edge. The concentration and condition of the remains suggest a rapid sea level change episode in the high Arctic within the past few thousand years.
The degree of preservation reportedly increases with proximity to the glacier, indicating long-term entrapment in permafrost conditions. These findings offer critical insights into the palaeoecology and climatic history of Eurasia's northernmost archipelago, the source claims.

Israel killings of Palestinians at Gaza GHF aid sites amount to war crimes: HRW - War on Gaza
Human Rights Watch on Friday warned that Israeli forces at the distribution sites of the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) have routinely opened fire on starving Palestinian civilians in acts that amount to war crimes. 'The dire humanitarian situation is a direct result of Israel's use of starvation of civilians as a weapon of war – a war crime – as well as Israel's continued intentional deprivation of aid and basic services, ongoing actions that amount to the crime against humanity of extermination, and acts of genocide,' read the report released Friday. "The repeated use of lethal force against Palestinian civilians by Israeli forces, without justification, violates both international humanitarian and human rights law.... Regular killings by Israeli forces near GHF sites also amount to war crimes," it added. The release of the damning report comes after nearly 22 months of Israel's war on Gaza and a five-month blockade on food and essential supplies, which have driven Gaza's 2.3 million Palestinians toward famine. 'Israeli forces are not only deliberately starving Palestinian civilians, but they are now gunning them down almost every day as they desperately seek food for their families,' said Belkis Wille, associate crisis and conflict director at HRW. 'US-backed Israeli forces and private contractors have put in place a flawed, militarized aid distribution system that has turned aid distributions into regular bloodbaths.' GHF began operations in late May, bypassing the longstanding UN-led humanitarian system. Since then, Israeli troops have regularly fired on starving Palestinian civilians approaching GHF centres for food. According to the UN, at least 1,373 Palestinians were killed as they tried to access food between 27 May and 31 July 2025, including 859 who were in the vicinity of GHF sites. US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff was expected in Gaza on Friday to inspect at least one GHF food distribution site, as international pressure mounts for Israel to fully lift its blockade and allow unfettered aid access for starving Palestinians. US Sends $51.6 Million for Ukraine's Patriot System Support
Israa Farhan The US Department of Defense has allocated $51.6 million for technical maintenance and operational support of Patriot air defense systems delivered to Ukraine, according to newly analyzed government contracts. The contract, awarded to Raytheon Technologies, the sole manufacturer of the Patriot system, includes both advisory and hands-on assistance for Ukrainian forces operating and maintaining the American-made defense equipment. The data was obtained from the official US government spending platform, and analyzed by Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Since February 2023, the US has transferred Patriot missile systems to Ukraine as part of its broader military aid package aimed at strengthening Kyiv's defense against ongoing Russian air and missile attacks. The contract includes on-site assistance with system operation, maintenance, repair, and logistical support. In addition, Raytheon Technologies is also providing remote assistance via a telephone-based help service based in Poland. The deal falls under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which covers technical and operational services beyond direct military supplies. Due to Raytheon's exclusive ownership of the proprietary technologies and core system data, the contract was awarded without a competitive bidding process. The agreement was initially set for a 12-month term but includes options to extend it for three additional years, potentially running until 2028. In February 2025, the contract value is set to increase by a further $9.96 million, securing its continuation at least until February 2026. Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly criticized the ongoing supply of Western weapons to Ukraine.
