PM Anwar: Malaysia invites Myanmar conflict groups for dialogue in Kuala Lumpur
SINGAPORE — Malaysia has taken the initiative to invite different groups in the Myanmar conflict for a dialogue in Kuala Lumpur in a bid to find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
He said the invitation was extended to the groups last month.
'I've started…and I urge my counterparts to send their teams, officials and military personnel intelligence to continue to engage,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his Special Address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, here.
When asked about the possibility of elections in Myanmar, Anwar said the immediate priority is to ensure peace, security, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
He noted that ASEAN leaders have continued to push for an extended ceasefire and the protection of all humanitarian aid workers.
'If the elections are fair and more inclusive and do not exclude parties, then of course, we are ready to accept, although (the process) may not be perfect,' he added.
Myanmar's State Administration Council (SAC), in March, announced that they will hold a general election either in December this year or January 2026 at the latest, according to international media reports. — BERNAMA

He also expressed the Penang government's appreciation towards the media for their role as a strategic partner in the state's development. "I believe with the support and cooperation of the media, government policies and initiatives can be understood and assessed fairly by the public," he said. Meanwhile, Media Mutiara Club president Mohd Iskandar Othman said Hawana was now an important platform to honour the role of the media in championing freedom and safety of journalists and to spur discussions on ethics, digital challenges and the future of the media industry. He also expressed his appreciation to the Communications Ministry's initiative to launch Tabung Kasih @Hawana in April 2023, which is implemented by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama). "Since its launch, the fund has provided aid to 315 media practitioners throughout the country, including those who are active and retired, focusing on those with health problems, facing difficulties in life or affected by disasters. "The initiative not only provide financial aid but also shows care and concern to journalists who have greatly contributed to society," he said. The highlight of Hawana 2025 will take place on June 14 at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, and will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with an estimated 1,000 media practitioners, both local and foreign, in attendance. Hawana, organised by the Communications Ministry and with Bernama as its implementing agency, offers various events, including a Pesta Pantun on May 31 and a prelaunch with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, as well as a media jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.

Sultan Ibrahim awards 2025 federal honours on official birthday at Istana Negara
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today attended the Investiture ceremony at Istana Negara to present the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours that were conferred in conjunction with his official birthday. It is the second investiture ceremony by His Majesty after being installed as the 17th King of Malaysia on July 20 last year. On arrival, His Majesty, accompanied by Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Their Majesties were then escorted to the Royal Dais to receive the Royal Salute by the Guard of Honour mounted by members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD), led by Major Khairul Fakhzan Zainol Abidin and comprising three officers and 103 other ranks, at Dataran Istana Negara. At the same time, the national anthem, Negaraku, was played by the RAMD Central Band and the Personal Flag of His Majesty was hoisted followed by a 21-gun salute carried out by the 41st Battery of the Royal Artillery Regiment. His Majesty then inspected the Guard of Honor and upon completion of the inspection, His Majesty once again received the Royal Salute before the national anthem, Negaraku, was played. Their Majesties were then escorted by Anwar and his wife to the Balairung Seri for the investiture ceremony. DEFENCE Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin led the Defence Ministry (Mindef) delegation to the 22nd Asia Security Summit: The International Institute for Strategic Studies Shangri-La Dialogue (IISS SLD 2025), held from May 30 to June 1 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. The annual forum, organised by International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) since 2002, brought together defence ministers, senior military officers and top government officials from across Asia-Pacific and Europe. As part of his working visit, Mohamed Khaled took part in multilateral meetings with Asean Defence Ministers, Timor-Leste and the United States (US) Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. He also met with counterparts from the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) — Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom — to reaffirm Malaysia's commitment to the long-standing defence pact that has spanned over five decades. In line with Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship in 2025, Mohamed Khaled also used the platform to discuss regional security concerns, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, and ways to strengthen defence cooperation between Asean countries and the US. The meeting with the US Defence Secretary reflected the strong bilateral ties between both countries, particularly in the defence sector. Meanwhile, Nelson's visit underscored Malaysia's relevance as a strategic partner for multinational players — a sign that could open the door to future industrial collaborations, especially in support of Malaysia's defence industry. Throughout the summit, Mohamed Khaled also held bilateral discussions with several defence leaders including Sweden's Defence Minister Dr Pal Jonson, France's Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu, Japan's Defence Minister Gen Nakatani and Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles. These meetings reinforced shared commitments to deepening defence ties across various domains.
