R. Kelly loses appeal as court upholds sex trafficking conviction

Express Tribune13-02-2025

R. Kelly's legal troubles deepened as a federal appeals court in Manhattan upheld his sex trafficking and racketeering conviction, rejecting his attempt to overturn the 30-year prison sentence.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Wednesday (February 12, 2025) that overwhelming evidence supported the conviction, reaffirming that Kelly used his celebrity status to manipulate and exploit young women and underage girls over two decades.
Judge Denny Chin, speaking for the three-judge panel, stated that prosecutors presented extensive proof of how Kelly controlled his victims through verbal and physical abuse, blackmail, and humiliation.
Kelly's defense, led by attorney Jennifer Bonjean, argued that the government misused the RICO statute, a law originally designed to combat organized crime syndicates, not individual misconduct. Bonjean claimed the ruling gave prosecutors 'limitless discretion' to apply the law in ways far removed from its original intent.
Despite this legal defeat, Kelly's defense team has indicated plans to take the case to a higher court, continuing their fight to challenge the conviction.
Once a dominant figure in R&B music, Kelly's fall from grace accelerated after the release of the 2019 docuseries "Surviving R. Kelly," which brought renewed attention to long-standing allegations.
With his appeal denied, Kelly remains incarcerated, facing a sentence that could keep him behind bars for life.

F1 driver Jenson Button's wife vows never to return to UK after £250,000 worth of belongings stolen

Jenson Button's wife, Brittny Button, has expressed her decision to never return to the UK after a harrowing experience where a thief swiped her suitcase containing £250,000 worth of jewellery and designer handbags. The incident occurred on February 13, 2025, when the couple returned from a brief getaway in Paris and arrived at London's St Pancras station. As per a recent interview with MailOnline, Brittny, 34, explained how her husband, Formula One driver Jenson Button, was loading the car when a thief seized her Goyard carry-on suitcase in seconds. The suitcase contained valuable items, including two Kelly bags worth around £70,000, and sentimental jewellery, such as pieces from her wedding and the birth of her daughter. Brittny revealed that while she typically travels with less luxurious items, she and her stylist had packed more expensive items for their romantic Valentine's Day getaway. However, the experience of having her belongings stolen so brazenly left her feeling shaken. 'I thought, 'Should I have brought my carry-on back here with me?'' she told MailOnline. "I felt like everything was so unsecure, so chaotic." The thief, identified as 41-year-old Mourad Aid, acted quickly while the couple's backs were turned, snatching the suitcase and fleeing the busy station. Despite the trauma, Brittny praised the British Transport Police for their quick response, with CCTV footage helping them track down the suspect. Aid was arrested on February 17, 2025, and pleaded guilty to theft at Westminster Magistrates' Court on February 19. He remains in custody for sentencing. However, the ordeal has left Brittny disillusioned with the UK. In the MailOnline interview, she stated, 'It just feels so unsafe now,' adding that London no longer feels as welcoming as it once did. The theft, combined with the stress of the California wildfires that had already threatened their home earlier in the year, has led Brittny and Jenson to have 'no interest' in returning to the UK. Though Brittny is grateful that the robbery was not violent, the loss of her sentimental items weighs heavily on her. 'A lot of people assume, 'Your husband bought you those,' but I worked hard for them," she explained. "It's just frustrating to have someone take what isn't theirs.' Brittny also noted the personal loss of the bags she intended to pass down to her daughter, reflecting on how the experience had altered her perspective. Despite the emotional toll, she finds comfort in knowing the thief is facing justice.

Megyn Kelly slams George Clooney over journalism comments, questions Hollywood career at age 63

Megyn Kelly is hitting back at George Clooney after the actor mocked her journalism career during a conversation with Broadway icon Patti LuPone for Variety's Actors on Actors. On a recent episode of Kelly's podcast, she fired back at Clooney, defending her journalistic credentials and criticizing his recent actions. Kelly took issue with Clooney's remarks in a New York Times op-ed, where the actor called for President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 Presidential race. In her response, Kelly questioned Clooney's journalistic credentials, noting his own lack of timely reporting on major stories. She pointed to his delayed commentary on Biden's mental fitness and the resulting op-ed after a presidential debate, accusing Clooney of being 'cowardly' and engaging in 'naked partisanship.' Further criticizing Clooney, Kelly suggested that the actor's Broadway role in Good Night, and Good Luck, an adaptation of his 2005 film, might be an attempt to stay relevant as Hollywood roles become scarcer at the age of 63. 'Are the Hollywood roles getting a little hard to come by as you age and get decidedly more smug and self-congratulatory?' she questioned sarcastically. In response to Kelly's remarks, Clooney had previously mentioned during his conversation with LuPone that he didn't claim to be a journalist, but had traveled to conflict zones like Darfur and Sudan to report firsthand stories. He dismissed Kelly's criticism, asserting that his Broadway play simply showcased her words without any manipulation. As of now, Clooney's representatives have not responded to Kelly's comments.

Megyn Kelly slams Blake Lively's TIME100 honour during gala appearance: "She shouldn't be here"

Megyn Kelly strongly denounced Blake Lively at the 2025 TIME100 Gala, disputing the actress's inclusion on Time magazine's 'Most Influential People' list. Speaking to the Daily Mail on the red carpet in New York City, Kelly stated, 'It's a ridiculous joke. She shouldn't be here. She has no influence over anything.' Photo: Instagram Kelly further accused Lively of making a false MeToo allegation against her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni. 'She's lived to regret doing it because virtually every allegation she has made has fallen apart,' Kelly said. 'To be honoured for that, to try to ruin a man over absolutely nothing, is a scandal.' She went on to suggest the magazine's decision was based on publicity rather than substance. 'Obviously, [Time is] looking for big stars to come here and generate pages on their magazines, but that was very wrong.' Lively arrived at the gala in an off-the-shoulder Zuhair Murad gown, accompanied by husband Ryan Reynolds and her mother. She was recognised for her philanthropic efforts, with civil rights lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill highlighting Lively's early support of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Despite the accolade, Lively is currently involved in a legal dispute with Baldoni. She filed a lawsuit in December 2024 accusing him of sexual harassment and retaliation. Baldoni denied the allegations and responded with a $400 million lawsuit against Lively, Reynolds, and their publicist, alleging defamation and extortion.
