Saints receiver Chris Olave brushes off concussion concerns and laughs off trade talk

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Chris Olave, the New Orleans Saints leading receiver in two of his first three seasons, wanted to make two things clear.
He is not concerned about the long-term implications of repeated concussions and sees himself spending his entire career with New Orleans.
Olave has been a full participant in non-contact, offseason practices and this week's mandatory minicamp, but has not played in an NFL game since last Nov. 3. That was the day he was leveled by Panthers safety Xavier Woods during a downfield route across the middle of the field.
Olave remained in a prone position on the field for several minutes, after which he was taken from the stadium to a Charlotte hospital.
While he was permitted to return to practice in December, he never returned to the lineup.
'It was tough, man, at first.; I ain't never really sat out that long,' Olave said after practice on Wednesday. 'That was really my first major injury. … Just not being able to go and practice and go to meetings with my guys was the worst part, but I feel like I'm ready. I was training and lifting and everything in December. So, I feel like I'm good.'
Olave has had at least four confirmed concussions in his first three seasons. The first occurred when he was a rookie in 2022 during an Oct. 9 game against Seattle. He missed just the following game and finished the season with team highs of 72 catches for 1,042 yards.
During the 2023 season, he did not miss a game after a Week 12 concussion against Atlanta and finished that season with team highs of 87 catches and 1,123 yards receiving.
Last season, however, he missed nine games because of two concussions. He sat out just one game after his first against Tampa Bay on Oct. 13 before the Nov. 3 one in Carolina ended his third NFL season.
Olave consulted with specialists after the most recent head injury.
'They said I was OK back in December when they cleared me. It was just unlucky situations I was being put in,' Olave said. 'God's got me at the end of the day. I'm not worried about nothing. So, just got to go out there 100% and be ready.'
Saints rookie coach Kellen Moore, hired in February after winning a Super Bowl with Philadelphia as the Eagles' offensive coordinator, has largely brushed aside questions about Olave's concussion history.
'I don't worry too much about that,' Moore said. 'We feel really really good about Chris. He's had an excellent offseason, an excellent career so far and (has) an excellent future.
'We feel like we've got a good one in him,' Moore added.
So, apparently, do some other teams who've reportedly asked the Saints about their willingness to trade Olave as New Orleans rebuilds from a five-win 2024 season.
The Saints also have lacked a proven quarterback since veteran Derek Carr's sudden retirement in May.
All three of New Orleans current QBs have less than three season of experience and not a single NFL win. But Olave expressed optimism about those young QBs — rookie Tyler Shough, second-year pro Spencer Rattler and third-year pro Jake Haener.

'The young QBs are good,' Olave said. 'I don't think they're going to come in and have hiccups. I feel like they got a good head on their shoulders. They got a good IQ. They're ready to play NFL ball. So, I'm excited.'
Olave also laughed off reports that he's the subject of trade offers.
'It's all rumors, man,' Olave said. 'In the offseason, everybody's trying to have something for clicks. So, I love it here. I love the front office. I love my coaches. I'm excited to be here and I want to be here forever.'

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attend Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final between Panthers and Oilers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Pop superstar Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce were among the celebrities that flocked to Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday to watch Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. Kelce, a Super Bowl-winning tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is a known hockey fan along with his brother Jason Kelce. And ever since Swift and Kelce began their high-profile romance in 2023, the 14-time Grammy Award winning singer has been known to pop in on big sporting events — including the last two Super Bowls — and cause an excited frenzy for fans. There were rumblings ahead of Thursday's game that the couple might attend the final. A helicopter landed near Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, ahead of the game. The VIP entrance to the area was also closed off and the media elevator was not available to be used for a period of time before pregame warmups began. Swift recently announced that she regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website, Swift said that all the music she's ever made now belongs to her after she has purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. Over the last few years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her early albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. Other celebs in attendance included former Miami Dolphins star defensive end Jason Taylor, who banged the drum before the game. Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo was joined by former Heat captain Udonis Haslem on the drum on Monday. The defending champion Panthers led the best-of-seven series 2-1 heading into Thursday's game. Sauce Gardner says new Jets coaches trying to get ‘perfection' out of him is what he needs

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Sauce Gardner is trying to cook up an even better version of himself this season for the New York Jets. And the star cornerback's new defensive coordinator is pushing him to get there. 'It's so many things that I feel like Sauce can do,' Steve Wilks said during the Jets' three-day minicamp this week. 'Again, the word 'consistent.' He's been a Pro Bowl player. How consistent can he be to take it to another level? And that's one of the things that I challenged him Day 1 when we had our conversation.' Gardner saw Wilks' comments and appreciated them. 'He was talking about me just being the same each and every week, and that's borderline perfect,' Gardner said Thursday. 'I know I'm not perfect, but the fact that he's trying to get perfection out of me is what I need.' Gardner was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Cincinnati and established himself as one of the league's top cornerbacks during his first two seasons with the Jets, which included being selected the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and making the All-Pro team in consecutive years for then-coach Robert Saleh and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. But after what has been perceived by some as a down season — he didn't make the All-Pro or Pro Bowl teams — Gardner is out to prove his naysayers wrong. 'I feel like it's always been noise surrounding me after each of my years that I've played,' he said. 'I've always been like the underdog.' And Wilks and new coach Aaron Glenn are helping provide the motivation. 'The last thing I need is a new regime to come in here and just allow me to be complacent,' Gardner said. 'Not saying that's who I am, but it's just great to have those types of guys that's going to demand a lot out of me and just push me in ways that I've never been pushed before.' Gardner's first two seasons had some comparing him to Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis in the way teams had to be wary whenever they threw the football in his direction. Some of Gardner's critics, though, said he often got away with holding receivers and his coverage last season slipped. Also, Gardner had just one interception and a career-low nine passes defensed. 'I feel like I played pretty smooth,' Gardner said. 'After all of my years, I always think there are things I can be better on. But it's never as bad as people try to paint it to be.' The analytics site Pro Football Focus supports Gardner's assessment, giving him a 91.9 coverage grade since 2022 that leads the league. His 46 forced incompletions are an NFL best in that span, as is his 0.60 yards per cover snap. 'I felt like, and you guys feel the same way, that he's one of the top corners in the league, but that consistency of being that dominant player each and every week, that's what we're looking for and that's been his challenge this offseason,' Wilks said. 'He's very gifted and I told him sometimes your greatest strength is your greatest weakness. He's a guy that sometimes that 85% is still better than everybody around him. 'So his thing is, and I told him, compete against yourself. That's where he has to get better, which he will.' Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey believe Gardner is a foundation piece for the franchise, which is why the Jets picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. Gardner is in line for an extension — he declined to say whether he wants to be the league's highest-paid cornerback — and opted to participate in mandatory minicamp rather than hold out to try to push for a new deal. 'My main focus is being the best football player I could be,' he said. 'But my team and the Jets have been talking and I feel pretty good about how the talks have been going.' Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The same for those talks Gardner has been having with Glenn and Wilks about his business on the field. 'Here's what I want Sauce to do and here's what I've talked to him about who he needs to be,' said Glenn, a three-time Pro Bowl pick during his playing days as a cornerback. 'When you do lead, just let your influence do all the talking. Like, how do you operate in the huddle with the players, in the locker room That speaks more than the rah-rah guy. 'And he understands that because influence to me is what really leadership is about. Like, how do you influence your other teammates? How do you influence people around you no matter what? And I think he's done a really good job of that.' ___ AP NFL:
