'Seriously Strong Lower Order': Nasser Hussain Praises England's Latest Selection Call

Nasser Hussain suggests Liam Dawson at number eight could strengthen England's lower middle order for the fourth Test against India, replacing injured Shoaib Bashir.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that placing left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson at number eight could create a formidable lower middle order for the hosts ahead of the fourth Test against India, starting in Manchester on July 23.
Dawson, 35, last played a Test for England in July 2017 and has been recalled to the side after Shoaib Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the series due to an injury sustained while stopping a ball off his own bowling in the third Test at Lord's. England won that match by 22 runs, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
'You feel for Shoaib Bashir, but that's the nature of the game: an injury opens the door for someone else. And Dawson has the chance to show what a competitor he is, not just with the ball, but with his all-round game.
'If he goes in at No 8, that could be the start of a seriously strong lower order, possibly with Gus Atkinson, who has scored a Test century, at No 9, and Brydon Carse, who batted so well at Lord's, at No 10," wrote Hussain in his column for Daily Mail on Wednesday.
He also felt Dawson's selection is a significant indicator that England is moving away from left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who last played a Test match in 2024.
'It's clear, too, that England have moved on from Jack Leach, who has a good relationship with Ben Stokes but lacks Dawson's all-round qualities.
'And that could be important when England decide which spin bowlers to take to Australia this winter. You need steel to succeed out there, and Dawson has it in abundance," added Hussain.
Dawson has been a consistent performer for Hampshire in recent years of the county championship and was named PCA Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024. Hussain further believes Dawson's recall signifies that England might be moving away from making unconventional selections.
'It's also interesting that the selectors have gone from one extreme to the other – from picking Bashir based on watching social-media footage to selecting a bloke who already has international experience and has done the hard yards in county cricket.
'England seem to be moving away from the really left-field selections, such as Josh Hull for last year's Oval Test against Sri Lanka, and saying to the county game: if you score runs and take wickets, you've got a chance. Sam Cook got the nod for the Zimbabwe Test, now Dawson is in the mix again. It's a good pick and a fillip for domestic cricketers around the country," he concluded.

Ravi Shastri's Big Warning To India: 'Rishabh Pant Shouldn't Play 4th Test If...'

Last Updated: Former India coach Ravi Shastri advised against playing Rishabh Pant in the fourth Test if he's unable to keep wickets due to injury. Dhruv Jurel could replace him. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has advised India against playing Rishabh Pant in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Manchester if he can't keep wickets. Shastri believes that if India include him in the 11 as a specialist batter, like assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate seemed to suggest in a recent press conference, he'll risk further injury by being in the outfield. Pant injured the tip of his left index finger while keeping wickets on the first day of the third Test at Lord's. Dhruv Jurel replaced him behind the sticks for the rest of the Test. Though Pant batted and hit 74 and 9 in the two innings, he looked in a bit of pain throughout. India are trailing 2-1 in the five-Test series and Manchester will have everything on the line, which means any decision to rest someone will have to be well-thought out. 'I don't think he should go in as a specialist batter if he can't keep because he will have to field," Shastri said on the ICC review podcast. 'If he fields, that will be worse. With the gloves at least there is some protection. Without gloves, if he gets something that stings in there, then it won't be very good. It'll only worsen the injury," he added. 'You've got to see if it is a break. If it is a break or a fracture, then he rather rests it and comes fully fit at The Oval. He won't get a substitute now. Now they'll know that he has been injured. When you pick the team for the next Test, he'll have to keep and he'll have to bat. He can't do one of the two. It's if it is fully fit. If it is not a crack, I think he'll play," Shastri added. Jurel could be a straightforward replacement for Pant if the latter isn't fit to bat. However, if he is, and India choose to pick him as a specialist batter, they can bring in Jurel for the out-of-form Karun Nair. Jurel has played four Tests for the country, scoring 202 runs at an average of 40.40. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'If Gill Becomes Good Man Manager Like Dhoni…': Ex-India Coach's Advise To Test Captain

Last Updated: Former India coach Gary Kirsten has advised Shubman Gill to develop strong man-management skills like MS Dhoni to become a great captain. BCCI's decision to name Shubman Gill as India's Test captain after Rohit Sharma raised quite a few eyebrows. However, the young batter from Punjab accepted the responsibility with both hands and even delivered decently in the ongoing Test series against England. Gill is currently the top scorer of the series, amassing 607 runs in just three matches. Moreover, he led the team to a first-ever victory at Edgbaston. But overall, he seems to be under a bit of pressure as the team trails 2-1 in the 5-match series. Former South Africa cricketer and ex-India coach Gary Kirsten has praised Gill's early signs as captain and advised him to become a great man-manager like MS Dhoni. 'Well, it's early days. I think he's got great potential. Captaincy is a whole lot of things that you've got to put together. He's a great thinker in the game. He's a good player himself. But there's a whole bunch of things you've got to get right," Kirsten told 'And I think man management is going to play, like any leader. Dhoni was an incredible man-manager. If he can get that component of his leadership really fired up, I think he has all the credentials to become a great captain for India." Gill began the series with 147 at Headingley, followed by 269 and 161 in the two innings at Edgbaston. His total of 430 runs in a single Test is the second-highest match aggregate in Test history. He also won the Player of the Match award in India's 336-run win in Birmingham. However, he struggled in the third Test at Lord's, scoring just 22 runs across two innings, and India lost the match. Gill will now look to return to form in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, and help India level the series. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Will Rajeev Shukla Become BCCI's Acting President After Roger Binny Vacates Post?

World Cup winner Roger Binny will step down as BCCI president due to age limit. Starting Saturday, attention will shift to the next steps following Roger Binny's departure as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as he turns 70. A member of India's 1983 ODI World Cup-winning team, Binny was elected BCCI President in 2022, succeeding former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. However, according to the board's constitution, no individual can hold any post after reaching the age of 70. The rules specify that 'the vice-president shall officiate in the president's absence when the president is unavailable', meaning vice-president Rajeev Shukla can assume the role of interim BCCI president following Binny's departure. The Board's rules further state that 'the vice-president shall also exercise such functions and duties as he may be empowered by the General Body of the Apex Council'. If Shukla does take over as acting BCCI president, sources informed IANS that he is likely to continue until September, when elections for the next set of office-bearers are scheduled during the board's Annual General Meeting (AGM). During his playing career, Binny participated in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs between 1979 and 1987. He was part of the senior men's selection committee and served as head coach when India won the 2000 U19 Men's Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Shukla, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party, is a highly experienced cricket administrator. He served as IPL commissioner from 2011 to 2017, became BCCI vice-president in 2020, and was re-elected to the position in 2022.
