Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE Updates: INDIA bloc MPs are set to protest against the 'vote chori' by BJP and Election Commission, as alleged by Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi in a press conference on Thursday. The Congress party also moved an adjournment notice in the Parliament, seeking a discussion regarding alleged fake votes and alleged irregularities in the Lok Sabha elections. In his notice, Congress MP Manickam Tagore reiterated Rahul Gandhi's claim of one lakh fake votes in an assembly seat in Karnataka.
National Sports Bill in Lok Sabha: The Lok Sabha on Friday is scheduled to take up the National Sports Governance Bill of 2025 for consideration and passage in the House. The Bill will be moved by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The Union Minister is also scheduled to move amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022. Further, Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will move the Indian Ports Bill of 2025, as per the List of Business of the House.
Bihar SIR protests to continue: Protests by Opposition MPs have taken the centre stage in both Houses this Parliament session, with continued disruptions and adjournments throughout the week. Opposition MPs are demanding a discussion on the voter list revision of Bihar ahead of the assembly elections, but Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified earlier this week that the matter can't be discussed as it has already been taken up by the Supreme Court.

'Facing Love Jihad Threat': Assam Chief Minister's Independence Day Message

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that 'illegal infiltration' - seen by many as a reference to Bengali-speaking Muslims - poses an "existential threat" to the northeastern state's indigenous communities. Mr Sarma also claimed Assam is engaged in 'a battle to keep the identity of the indigenous people alive'. "We are facing everything from love jihad to land jihad," the BJP leader declared during his Independence Day speec, calling on Assamese communities to 'defend' their heritage. "The spirit of the tricolour brought people together as we celebrate the country's 79th Independence Day... in an atmosphere of peace and backed by solid progress achieved over the last few years. I urge everyone to always uphold the pride of the nation," Mr Sarma said on X, declaring Assam had 'compromised with infiltrators' for 78 years and allowed 'certain demographic changes' to take root. The bureaucracy under previous governments have a lot to answer for - as to how such a mind boggling scale of encroachment by infiltrators was allowed in Assam. #IndependenceDay — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) August 15, 2025 "If we remain silent, in the next decade we will lose our identity, our land, and everything. Even the Kamakhya Temple hills could be encroached if we don't react now," he warned. Appealing to indigenous residents to not sell any land to 'unknown buyers', he said his government had granted land rights to indigenous people to strengthen community ownership. "We have already compromised in many districts. As a proud Assamese, I am not ready to compromise anymore. Our fight now will inspire the next generation to keep our identity alive." The Chief Minister also accused some of 'surrendering to infiltrators'. "To stop them, we have declared war on their aggression. I promise that we will evict the unknown people from every piece of grazing land, tribal belt and government land," he said. "These unknown people are advancing to capture political power now, after almost capturing economic power. They have captured every sphere of the construction sector." The Chief Minister's sharp remarks echo those made this time last year, when he declared he would not let Bengali-speaking Muslims take over the state. Mr Sarma further declared 'I am not in the competition for minority votes', a remark the Congress said was a communal statement. Speaking in the Assembly after the opposition's adjournment motion on key issues - including the targeting of Bengali Muslims, or Miyas, in upper Assam's Sivasagar district - Mr Sarma dared his rivals, "I will take sides. What can you do? Will not let Miya Muslims take over Assam." The remarks came two days after Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi accused the BJP of trying to recreate the 2002 Gujarat riots in Assam. Mr Gogoi's comments followed reports that some organisations had threatened Muslims from Upper Assam to leave the administrative division. Assam will vote in what is likely to be a highly-charged Assembly election in March-April 2026.

Govt. embarks upon swapping high interest loans with low interest ones

Faced with the mounting interest burden of high-cost loans obtained in the past, the Telangana Government has reportedly decided to swap the high-interest loans with low-interest borrowings so as to ensure that it can save significant amounts in the coming days. The effort can be seen from the fact that the Government has opted for low-interest open market borrowings through the auction of securities conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the past few weeks. The State Government raised a huge ₹5,000 crore through the auction of securities on August 5, with interest rates pegged around 7.1%. It has raised ₹3,500 crore on July 29 with interest rates of 7.15% to 7.16%, and the same is the case with ₹2,500 crore raised on July 15 with interest rates pegged at 7.1%. Though the tenure of the borrowings is longer, they are likely to come in as a cushion to the Government owing to their low interest rates. The development follows the huge loans obtained by the BRS Government at high interest rates, which have become a burden on the State Government that is forced to pay interest of around ₹25,000 crore since the last two fiscal years. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said, during his Independence Day address on Friday, that the Government completed debt servicing of ₹2.2 lakh crore, which included principal of ₹1.32 lakh crore and interest component of ₹88,178 crore since the Congress assumed power less than two years ago, indicating the seriousness of the issue. Senior officials said the low-interest loans will help set off the high cost of government debts, but not the off-budget borrowings. OBBs are primarily financed by the financial institutions which cannot be swapped, senior officials said. Keeping this in view, the government addressed a communication to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman seeking her approval for the restructuring of high-interest loans. The communication cited the loan of ₹31,795 crore raised by the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme SPV from the Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification Corporation with interest rates ranging from 10.75% to 11.25%. 'Additionally, I would like to bring to your notice that several projects initiated with high interest loans remain incomplete due to various reasons resulting in sub-optimal yields compared to their original projection,' the CM said, seeking the Union Finance Minister's intervention in directing the financial institutions like PFC and REC to restructure loans that were extended to the SPVs/corporations.
