'Skilled workforce, early-warning systems and...': PM Modi lays down priorities for building disaster-resilient infra
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday outlined five key global priorities for him to build disaster-resilient infrastructure, including a skilled workforce, a global digital repository to document best practices and innovative financing.
In a video address to the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2025, Modi said strengthening early-warning systems and coordination is another crucial aspect.
He noted that India has established a tsunami-warning system benefitting 29 countries and that it recognises the Small Island Developing States (SIDA) as large-ocean countries and the need for special attention to their vulnerabilities.
With the event being hosted in Europe for the first time, Modi thanked French President Emmanuel Macron and extended his best wishes to him for the upcoming United Nations Oceans Conference.
In his remarks, he prime minister noted that the conference's theme is 'Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions' and underscored the vulnerability of coastal regions and islands to natural disasters and climate change.
He cited recent disasters, including Cyclone Remal in India and Bangladesh, Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean, Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia, Hurricane Helene in the United States, Typhoon Usagi in the Philippines and Cyclone Chido in parts of Africa.
Modi emphasised that these disasters have caused significant damage to lives and property, reinforcing the need for resilient infrastructure and proactive disaster management.
Recalling India's past experiences with devastating disasters, including the super-cyclone of 1999 and the tsunami of 2004, he highlighted how the country adapted and rebuilt with resilience, constructing cyclone shelters across vulnerable areas and contributing to the establishment of the tsunami-warning system benefitting 29 nations.
Modi said disaster resilience requires innovative financing and called for the creation of actionable programmes to ensure that developing countries have access to the necessary funds.
He highlighted the necessity of strengthening early-warning systems and coordination, noting their critical role in facilitating timely decision making and effective last-mile communication.
The prime minister called for the construction of infrastructure that remains steadfast against time and tide, emphasising the need for resilience in development.
He called for global efforts to build a strong and disaster-resilient future for the world.

'This dispute dates back to before 1962, and there are occasional confrontations during patrolling, something clearly visible in several videos showing face-offs between the Indian and Chinese armies—largely because the boundary remains undemarcated,' PTI news agency quoted Rijiju as saying. The union minister added that by 'asserting' that China had occupied 2000 kilometres of Indian land, Rahul 'continues to make baseless statements'. He said that the government had urged the Wayanad MP to not speak against the nation 'without factual backing'. Rijiju added that 'there must be a pause in such rhetoric' following the SC's question to the Congress leader. 'We consider ourselves responsible citizens, and Rahul Gandhi is expected to be one as well,' Rijiju said, adding that matters concerning national security must not be discussed in a way that 'demoralises the armed forces'. 'Govt denies, distracts, lies': Congress slams Centre after SC raps Rahul
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday launched a sharp criticism of the Centre over its handling of the border situation with China. He accused the Modi government of following what he called a 'DDLJ' policy, an acronym for 'deny, distract, lie, and justify'. In a post on X, Ramesh said the Centre has been evading tough questions about the ongoing standoff with China, especially since the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020, in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. Shibu Sorens death has plunged Jharkhand into grief: Subodh Kant
Last Updated: Ranchi, Aug 4 (PTI) Former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay on Monday said the demise of veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren has plunged Jharkhand into grief and created a void that will be difficult to fill. Shibu Soren, 81, who was undergoing treatment at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month for kidney-related problems, passed away on Monday morning. 'The passing of Shibu Soren has plunged Jharkhand into profound grief. I couldn't hold back my tears upon hearing the heartbreaking news. I had the privilege of walking alongside him for decades in political life — his departure feels like the end of an era. Coming to terms with this loss is incredibly difficult for me," Sahay said. He said 'Guruji', as Shibu Soren was popularly known, was not only a towering figure in Jharkhand but also one of the most revered leaders in Indian politics. 'His absence has left a void in the heart of Jharkhand and across the nation — a void that is almost impossible to fill. He was our comrade in the early days of the Jharkhand movement, a tireless warrior who dedicated his entire life to the cause of Jharkhand and its people," Sahay added. The people of Jharkhand will forever remember their Dishom Guru with deep affection, respect, and pride, he added. 'May the Almighty grant him a place at His divine feet and eternal peace to his noble soul," Sahay said.
