Punjab woman injured during Pakistani aerial intrusion dies
A 50-year-old woman who was injured when debris fell on her home during a Pakistani aerial intrusion in Punjab's Ferozepur last week died at a private hospital in Ludhiana on Tuesday (May 13, 2025), officials said.
Her husband and their son are still undergoing treatment.
Multiple aerial attacks were carried out by Pakistan at many places along India's western borders, including in Punjab, that were effectively thwarted by Indian security forces.
Sukhwinder Kaur, her husband Lakhwinder Singh (55) and their son Monu Singh (24) suffered severe burn injuries when an unidentified projectile fell on their home in the Khai Pheme Ke village, setting the structure and a car on fire, during a Pakistani aerial intrusion on May 9.
Officials had earlier said Monu Singh was the brother of Lakhwinder Singh.
Following Kaur's death, her family members blocked the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway, demanding Rs 1 crore in compensation and martyr status for her.
Supported by locals and farmer unions, the family refused to cremate Kaur, calling the state government's Rs 5 lakh compensation a "cruel joke".
BJP leader Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi also met the family.
Later, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann raised the aid to ₹10 lakh after Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora's contribution.
The protest was called off late in the evening after MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar assured the family that their demands would be taken up with the State government.
Earlier, Mr. Mann had announced a ₹5 lakh ex-gratia from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and expressed deep sorrow over Kaur's death.
"Our government stands firmly with her family during this time of immense pain and we are committed to providing all possible support to help them cope with this devastating loss," he said.
New Delhi and Islamabad reached an agreement on May 10 to halt military actions after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

‘Shows apathy': Allahabad HC raps UP government for delay in disbursing Kumbh stampede compensation
The Allahabad High Court on Friday said that the delay in disbursing compensation to the families of those who died during a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage site in Prayagraj showed the Uttar Pradesh government's 'apathy to the plight of the citizens', Live Law reported. A bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain also directed the state government to furnish details of the deaths and medical handling of those who died or were injured between January 28 and the end of the pilgrimage. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state was also told to submit details of the number of compensation claims it had received and settled, and those that are pending. The stampede had broken out at the Maha Kumbh on January 29 as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar. The state government has said that at least 30 persons were killed and 60 others were injured, although several media reports have suggested that the actual toll could be significantly higher. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for those who died in the stampede. The court was hearing a plea filed by the husband of one of the persons who died. It expressed concern that the woman's body had been handed over to her family without a postmortem being conducted. The judges took note of the serious injuries reported on the woman, including a crushed rib cage, and questioned the lack of official documentation or communication with the family regarding the cause and circumstances of the death, Live Law reported. The bench directed that medical institutions and authorities in Prayagraj be made parties to the petitions and directed them to file affidavits disclosing details of all patients and dead bodies that may have been brought to the facilities and those dispatched by them between the incident and the end of the Mela. The bench was alarmed that the woman's body was handed over to the family in February but compensation was yet to be provided, according to Live Law.

A heartwarming picture of Indian-origin Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy was bombarded with racist and anti-immigrant comments by X users, as the MAGA world imploded with Donald Trump and Elon Musk attacking each other in public. Vivek Ramaswamy was closely aligned with the MAGA movement until Christmas 2024, when he criticised aspects of American culture and strongly reaffirmed his support for the H-1B visa programme. At the time, he was serving as co-chief of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. While Musk initially backed Ramaswamy's stance on H-1B visas, he reportedly disapproved of his subsequent actions. As a result, Ramaswamy stepped down from DOGE even before Donald Trump's inauguration. Ramaswamy had also put his hat in the ring for the US presidential polls but later withdrew from the race, despite backing from both Musk and Trump. As the two heavyweights locked horns on social media, Ramaswamy posted a photo carrying his two children — Karthik and Arjun — and wrote: "It's why we do it." The post had no connection with the MAGA crisis but was still met with vicious trolling.
