The Allahabad High Court on Friday said that the delay in disbursing compensation to the families of those who died during a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage site in Prayagraj showed the Uttar Pradesh government's 'apathy to the plight of the citizens', Live Law reported.
A bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain also directed the state government to furnish details of the deaths and medical handling of those who died or were injured between January 28 and the end of the pilgrimage.
The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state was also told to submit details of the number of compensation claims it had received and settled, and those that are pending.
The stampede had broken out at the Maha Kumbh on January 29 as a large number of pilgrims arrived to take a holy bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar.
The state government has said that at least 30 persons were killed and 60 others were injured, although several media reports have suggested that the actual toll could be significantly higher.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for those who died in the stampede.
The court was hearing a plea filed by the husband of one of the persons who died. It expressed concern that the woman's body had been handed over to her family without a postmortem being conducted.
The judges took note of the serious injuries reported on the woman, including a crushed rib cage, and questioned the lack of official documentation or communication with the family regarding the cause and circumstances of the death, Live Law reported.
The bench directed that medical institutions and authorities in Prayagraj be made parties to the petitions and directed them to file affidavits disclosing details of all patients and dead bodies that may have been brought to the facilities and those dispatched by them between the incident and the end of the Mela.
The bench was alarmed that the woman's body was handed over to the family in February but compensation was yet to be provided, according to Live Law.

Scientific temper important to fully claim Right to Life: Retd Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka

Scientific temper is important to completely claim the Right to Life, said retired Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka while delivering the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Memorial Lecture in Pune on Sunday. Oka emphasised that Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guaranteed the Right to Life with dignity and prosperity, and that a scientific temper was important to fully claim these rights. Oka said, 'If Article 21 of the Constitution has given us a Right to Life with dignity, what does it mean? It is not just living with respect but also living meaningfully. Reading good literature and good thoughts, artwork, watching a comedy film or a stand-up comedian's show, this makes life prosperous. This is how we fulfill the Right to Life. Therefore, it is important to develop a scientific temper and spirit of enquiry to fully claim the Right to Life with prosperity.' The retired judge also talked about how people use scientific equipment in their daily lives but do not develop a scientific temper: 'In Article 51(a) of the Constitution where scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform come together…Just using scientific equipment does not mean that people have scientific temper. In a lighter vein, DJs are used in many of our festivals. These hurt the ears and are their levels much above the permitted decibel limits according to the rules. DJ systems are created by science, but just because we are using it we cannot say that we have scientific temper.' At the same event, Retired Supreme Court Judge Hemant Gokhale said, 'We killed Dr Dabhokar, also killed comrade (Govind) Pansare. This is the disposition of Maharashtra today. And the way minority and minority religion people are being harassed, this is against scientific temper…You all must have read that day before in Jamner, a young man was killed because he belonged to a religion. What kind of scientific temper is this?' The lecture was held before the 12th anniversary of the assasination of Dr Narendra Dabholkar on August 20, who was one of India's foremost rationalists and anti-superstition activists. Dabholkar was gunned down in Pune in 2013 while on a walk. Two people were convicted for his murder in 2024 by a special court in Pune while three others, including the mastermind accused, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. All accused had links to extremist Hindu organisation Sanatan Sanstha. MANS and Dabholkar's family have questioned the CBI for not appealing the acquittals in higher courts.

309 families evicted from Assam grazing reserve

The authorities in northeastern Assam's Biswanath district evicted 309 families from a village grazing reserve (VGR) on Sunday (August 17, 2025). Officials in the district said some 600 security personnel, 20 excavators, and 10 bulldozers were deployed to clear 175 bighas or 23 hectares of land in the Japariguri VGR from encroachment. District Commissioner Simanta Kumar Das said many families dismantled their houses and left after receiving notices on August 1 to vacate within 15 days. 'The remaining structures, including a tea garden, were demolished,' he said. The encroachers, officials said, were mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims. While organisations of indigenous communities have backed such eviction drives, the All-Assam Minority Students' Union said the Biswanath exercise was carried out inhumanely and demanded a pause until the government ensures rehabilitation of the people targeted. CM's 'hate-driven propaganda' In his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vowed to continue such eviction drives to free forestlands, grazing lands, and government revenue lands from encroachers of 'doubtful citizenship'. He also warned the indigenous communities about a future where they will be at the mercy of 'strangers' unless they defend their cultural identity. Assam MLA and All-India United Democratic Front general secretary Rafiqul Islam criticised the Chief Minister for defaming Muslims. He also said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Assam government has been systematically keeping Muslim officers away from key positions. Terming the Chief Minister's Independence Day speech as 'hate-driven propaganda' to polarise the people on religious lines, he told agencies that the BJP-led government has consciously not appointed any Muslim as the District Commissioner or Superintendent of Police, although there are several Muslim IAS and IPS officers in Assam.

What will be price of petrol, diesel if India stops importing oil from Russia? Prices of petrol, diesel will reach…,Indian customers will have to pay…

India-Russia relations- File image New Delhi: In a significant update amid the trade talks between India and the US and Donald Trump imposing an additional 25% tariff on India, taking the total tariff to 50% due to India's continued crude oil purchase from Russia, reports are now talking about the inflationary impact if India stops buying oil from Russia. Notably, Russia become India's largest oil supplier since the Russia-Ukraine war and is currently supplying 35% to 40% of India's oil needs. Why Donald Trump imposed tariffs on India? In a massive action against India, the United States, under the leadership of Donald Trump imposed tariffs on India as India continued to purchase crude oil from Russia. In response to the move, India clarified its stand and said that it buys Russian oil because Europe stopped sourcing from Moscow. How much loss will India face if Russia cuts imports? As per experts, if India cuts Russian import of crude oil to India, India will have to rely more on costlier oil from West Asia, Africa, the US, and Latin America, which will pose technical, economic, and strategic challenges. More notably, the shifting could raise annual costs by Rs 25,000–40,000 crore for Indian refiners, which would ultimately hit the budgets of Indian consumers. Earlier, a SBI report has also indicated that the fuel bill might increase by USD 9 billion in FY26 and USD 11.7 billion in FY27 if Russia cuts its crude oil imports to India. US President Trump on whether US will impose additional 25 pc tariffs on India? In a significant statement and a matter of good news for India, US President Trump said the US may not impose secondary tariffs on countries continuing to buying Russian crude oil. Speaking to Fox News aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska, he said that, 'Well, he (Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…'. (With inputs from agencies)
