Is It Safe to Take Your Baby to a Concert? Here's What Experts Say

Yahoo2 days ago
Fact checked by Sarah Scott
It wasn't as viral a moment as the Coldplay kiss cam fiasco, but at a recent Maluma concert in Mexico City, the artist made headlines for something other than his music.
ICYMI, Maluma stopped the show to call out a parent who brought a baby along for the night. Per USA Today, he addressed the fan in Spanish, saying, "Do you think it's a good idea to bring a 1-year-old baby to a concert where the decibels are through the...roof, where the sound is blasting?"
Maluma then advised the parent to protect the child's ears—or better yet, not bring the little one at all. "I say this with all care and with all respect, since I'm a dad. I would never have brought a 1-year-old to a concert. So next time, be a bit more mindful, OK?"
This particular encounter follows another controversial moment involving a kiddo at a concert. Earlier this month, Dominic Fike brought his baby—who, unlike the child at the Maluma show, was wearing headphones—on stage at Lollapalooza (more on whether headphones do enough to protect babies' ears in a moment).
And these two mini-fans aren't the first babies to attend a concert. Who could forget the parent who brought their baby to nap on the floor at a Taylor Swift show last year?
These instances leave a parent like me to wonder whether it's safe to bring a baby to a concert at all. Because a certain someone may be looking to buy tickets to a certain Jake Owen concert in the near future. In question as I plan the evening: Should this be a night out among adults, or a family affair?
Not a Myth: Concerts Can Lead to Hearing Damage in Babies
It looks like I'll be hiring a sitter, since experts side with Maluma, and warn that a baby's hearing can indeed be permanently damaged from exposure to very loud music—and concerts certainly get very loud.
According to Abhita Reddy, MD, board-certified pediatric ENT/Otolaryngologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, a gig like Maluma's can reach 90 to 120 decibels, depending on the type of music, size of venue, and a person's distance from the speakers, among other factors.
She cautions that when sound reaches 90 to 95 decibels, a child's hearing can be impacted even if they are exposed for a short period of time. 'We do not recommend any prolonged...exposure for anything over 95 decibels, as even a few minutes of exposure can cause permanent hearing loss,' Dr. Reddy tells Parents.
The potential risks of a night out with your tot are serious, and not only include permanent hearing loss, but the potential for increased sound sensitivity, and ringing in the ears.
As a general guideline, you should not expose your baby's ears to a noise level of over 70 decibels, or about what a vacuum cleaner would emit, according to pediatrician Michael Glazier, MD, chief medical officer for Bluebird Kids Health based in Jacksonville.
What About Noise-Reducing Headphones and Other Safety Precautions?
Of course, we've all seen babies wearing noise-reducing headphones like those that Fike's little one sported at the music festival. I'm recalling Michael Phelps' son donning a cute pair at the Olympic Games years ago, too.
But there are some important things to know about headphones for future music and sporting event fans. First, if you decide to purchase a pair for your child, Dr. Reddy recommends looking for the over-ear kind that feature sound reduction of 20 to 30 decibels. Minimuffs is a brand to consider as it is sometimes used in neonatal intensive care units, according to Dr. Glazier.
'It is important to note ear protectors decrease the decibel level of noise exposure, but do not eliminate it,' he cautions. Dr. Reddy further notes that noise-reducing headphones are not well-regulated.
Meanwhile, she recommends that parents who opt to bring a baby or small child to a concert not only outfit a baby with headphones, but be sure to download an app to their phones that checks sound levels in decibels from their seats.
So...Are Concerts Safe For Babies?
Ultimately, Dr. Glazier says taking a baby to a concert is not a good idea as your baby's ears are sensitive, and a still-developing auditory system can be permanently damaged.
'Overall, taking small children to large concerts is not recommended given the lack of regulation surrounding sound standards at different venues,' Dr. Reddy concurs.
Beyond the concerns over hearing loss, parents should consider other risks of toting a small child to a concert, such as secondhand smoke exposure and that attendees could be intoxicated, leading to an increased risk of an accident.
As far as when you should take a child to a concert, Dr. Glazier recommends that this rite of passage be saved for a time that they are mature enough to handle the excitement—and noise.

Liam Gallagher banned from throwing tambourine and maracas into crowd after Oasis gigs

Liam Gallagher claims that he has been banned from throwing his tambourine and maracas into the crowd at the end of Oasis gigs. The ban is said to have been put in place after two men mobbed a female fan and snatched the maracas from her at one of the Live Forever band's Wembley concerts on the Oasis Live '25 Tour. Speaking during one of the Wonderwall group's recent shows at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, Liam said: "I can't throw my tambourine out tonight or my maracas. "I've been told not to. I'm not being tight or anything like that. Do you know what I mean?" The 52-year-old singer added: "I've just been told, 'Don't do any of that s*** any more', because you don't know how to behave yourselves. "You keep pinching each other on your nipples and ears and f****** s*** like that and kneeing each other in the b*******. "I've been told now." Oasis have made a triumphant return to the stage with their tour this summer as Liam and his older brother Noel Gallagher have put an end to their long-running feud and the Britpop icons are said to have been offered the chance to continue their reunion into 2026 with four shows at Knebworth. The proposed dates would mark the 30th anniversary of the band's seminal concerts at the Hertfordshire venue in 1996 but those close to Oasis stress that nothing has been finalised yet. A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "They've seen the speculation, they've heard about the offers and they know what the fans want. "It's ultimately up for them to decide. The Oasis reunion hasn't just been concerts. You can see that it's been a cultural movement. Nothing comes close in recent history to Oasis's shows. "It's a question of whether Noel and Liam want to draw a line in the sand and close the door on this chapter, knowing they capture the zeitgeist. Or do they strike it up again and keep the magic going? It's a difficult decision to make." Meanwhile, Liam hit out at Edinburgh council bosses during the gig at Murrayfield last week after they described attendees at the concerts as "mainly middle-aged men who take up more room" and having a "medium to high intoxication" level during a safety briefing last year. He said: "One second, where do I start here with everyone at the city council? The f****** slags. "£1 billion pounds we're bringing to this city over the next three days.£1 billion. But you won't see any of it because the Lord Provost will be splitting it between (his) posh ugly f****** mates." Liam added: "We're still waiting [for] a f****** apology."

CNN anchor Jake Tapper caught on hot mic during Trump/Putin coverage: 'Give me my show'

CNN anchor Jake Tapper was caught on a hot mic during the network's special Aug. 15 coverage of President Donald Trump's summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Tapper, who usually hosts his two-hour program "The Lead" from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. EST from Washington, D.C., was live Friday in Alaska, when his colleague Anderson Cooper attempted to throw it back to him. "I'm fine, just give me my show back," Tapper said, seemingly expressing his frustration while failing to realize he was live. The hot mic moment was shared on X by conservative NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck. A smiling Cooper then quipped, "Show's back!" 'Allison Cooper': Trump calls CNN anchor Anderson Cooper 'Allison' in rant After the awkward exchange, Tapper welcomed Sen. Adam Schiff to the show, but the California Democrat couldn't hear the CNN host. "I think I lost you," Schiff said. Tapper then told the audience that "we're having real comms problems today. I'm sorry about that. If anybody can hear me, let's go throw it back to New York." At that point, Cooper again took over, saying "Okay, Jake, thanks very much." USA TODAY reached out to reps for Cooper, Tapper and CNN for comment. At the Alaska summit, Trump and Putin failed to achieve a major breakthrough in peace negotiations over Russia's war against Ukraine. Tapper occasionally becomes frustrated during on-air coverage. In 2020, Tapper played Lara Trump's remarks at a "Women for Trump" 2020 campaign event about former President Joe Biden during her interview on "State of the Union." "Every time he comes on stage and they turn to him, I'm like: 'Joe, can you get it out. Let's get the words out,'" Trump said. Tapper then asked, "How do you think it makes little kids with stutters feel when they see you make a comment like that?" Trump then responded that she did not know Biden had a stutter, which was a well-documented disability of the then-presidential candidate. "I think what we see on stage with Joe Biden, Jake, is very clearly a cognitive decline. That's what I'm referring to," Trump said. Tapper then shut down the interview, telling Trump that she had "absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody's cognitive decline." In May, Tapper revealed that he had apologized to Trump about the incident. That same month, Tapper and co-author Alex Thompson of Axios released a controversial book "Original Sin" that explored the physical and cognitive decline of Biden during his presidency. The book received significant backlash from certain liberal and center corners of the political spectrum. Contributing: James Powel

Justin Timberlake's Fans' Concerns Transition From Performance To Appearance Amid His World Tour

Justin Timberlake's Forget Tomorrow World Tour continues to be a worry-filled affair, but fans are no longer concerned about his lackluster performances. The Prince of Pop's most recent Georgia concert had many worried about his health and urged him to take a well-needed break. This shift in fans' reactions to his tour follows months of backlash over the singer's subpar shows. Justin Timberlake's world tour has faced multiple hiccups, including sound issues and the crowds' negative response to his new album. The entertainer repeatedly promoted his new songs on the tour despite fans' unfamiliarity with the songs. Justin Timberlake's 'Tired' Appearance Sparks Waves Of Support After Timberlake took the stage in Georgia over the weekend, fans rushed to social media to pen their support after noticing his "tired" appearance. These worried admirers assured the singer that resting was okay and vowed to wait patiently until his health improved. Several fans, per The Daily Mail, agreed that Timberlake needed "a break to recharge." They did not criticize his lackluster performances and pushed for understanding, claiming the singer gave his all at the start of the tour before losing his momentum. These positive responses and pleas for understanding came amid severe backlash over Timberlake's concerts. Critics slammed the entertainer for wasting their concert money, claiming his shows were "a lifeless karaoke act" where the crowd did all the singing. The Prince Of Pop Is Allegedly In A Rut A source shed more light on Timberlake's poor performances, claiming he was "in a rut." The Blast reported that they alleged the entertainer was tired of performing his old songs, despite them being a fan favorite, and craved something new and exciting. "It's embarrassing how he's been basically doing karaoke. He knows that he's lost his mojo and he really wants it back," the source added. On the other hand, Timberlake's wife, Jessica Biel, was reportedly concerned about his well-being and the negative impacts of the long tour. Biel, per an insider, "thinks Justin has aged years since he started The Forget Tomorrow World Tour last April." They claimed she witnessed first-hand how the performances had taken their toll on him, "not just physically but emotionally," and hoped Timberlake would take a break. What Critics Have Said About Timberlake's Tour Biel's concerns weren't misplaced, as critics have repeatedly called Timberlake out for his terrible performances. One viral TikTok video captured an aggrieved fan lamenting about the show they attended. The content creator labeled him "an absolute disappointment," echoing similar sentiments to other concertgoers. These upset fans bashed Timberlake for arriving late to the show, yet refusing to perform correctly. They claimed he sang about five words of each song and seemed disconnected from the audience with shades on his face. Critics bashed Timberlake as "rude" and "disrespectful," while others demanded a refund. The same situation occurred in Dublin, where many slammed the singer for dropping his mic and walking lazily around the stage instead of giving an entertaining performance. The Singer Sparked Backlash For Yelling At His Support Crew Another incident that had critics gunning for Timberlake's head occurred this month when a viral video captured him yelling at the support crew. The Blast covered the drama, reporting that many labeled the singer "highly unprofessional" over his heated reaction. Timberlake was performing at the Lytham Festival in the UK as part of his world tour when he experienced sound issues. A staff member approached him to discuss the problem and seemingly estimated the time it would take to resolve the hiccup. It appeared the timeframe did not suit Timberlake, who seemed to be angry as he berated the staffer and another member of the support team. Fans disapproved of the interaction and called the singer out on social media, stressing that he should have been patient instead of yelling. Justin Timberlake Allegedly Considered Reuniting With NSYNC Early this year, it was reported that Timberlake's world tour had fallen beyond expectations. A source claimed the multiple setbacks and negative fan reactions had the media personality reconsidering his status as a solo artist. They alleged he was "embarrassed" after asking fans to sing along to the tracks from his new album, only to realize they were unfamiliar with the songs. Despite this incident, the source noted: "He loves his recent album and loves performing it." However, the source added that the negative response to Timberlake's album and shows "made him realize what needs to be next, and that's an NSYNC reunion." They claimed he believed reuniting with his former boy band would "get him back on track and in the good graces with fans that he may have lost."
