Türkiye to Start Supplying Syria with Gas in June

Asharq Al-Awsat22-05-2025
Türkiye will start supplying Syria, which has suffered from severe power shortages, with gas in June as the two work on completing a gas pipeline connecting them, the Syrian energy minister told a press conference on Thursday.
A 400-kilovolt transmission line between the two countries could also be operating by the end of the year, Mohamed al-Bashir said alongside his visiting Turkish counterpart, Reuters reported.

Turkish Central Bank Sets New Interim Targets for Inflation

Türkiye's central bank announced interim targets for inflation in a new communication strategy on Thursday, setting a target of 24% for end-2025 and 16% for end-2026. Presenting the bank's quarterly inflation report in Istanbul, Governor Fatih Karahan said inflation was currently projected to be between 25% and 29% in 2025 and between 13% and 19% in 2026. "We have decided to change the framework for presenting medium-term forecasts," Reuters quoted Karahan as saying. "We will present 'interim targets' that will not be changed unless extraordinary circumstances occur between report periods." "The 'year-end interim targets' will serve as a commitment and anchor," he said. Last month, Türkiye's central bank cut interest rates by 300 basis points to 43%, resuming an easing cycle that had been disrupted by political turmoil earlier this year, as markets have since calmed and disinflation continued. Annual consumer price inflation fell to 33.52% in July, sustaining a downward trend after hitting a peak of 75% in May last year. The bank was keeping its 24% end-2025 inflation forecast as its interim target for the year, with interim targets of 16% and 9% set for 2026 and 2027 respectively, Karahan said, adding that forecasts will continue to be announced in inflation reports. "Interim targets will serve as a reference in determining the endogenous monetary policy path, ensuring that inflation converges to the interim targets within the control horizon," he said, noting that this period was between 12 and 24 months. He said the bank foresees inflation stabilizing at 5% in the medium term. "During the disinflation process, we will maintain our tight monetary policy stance to achieve our interim targets," he said. The lira was little changed at 40.79 against the dollar after the report's release. Before last month's rate cut, the bank had hiked its policy rate to 46% from 42.5% in April, reversing an easing cycle that had begun in December, following market volatility over the arrest in March of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival.

Türkiye to Help Syria with Weapon Systems, Equipment under Signed MoU

Türkiye will help Syria with the provision of weapons systems and logistical tools under a military cooperation accord signed on Wednesday, a Turkish defense Ministry source said on Thursday, adding that Ankara would also train Syria's army in the use of such equipment if needed. In a first step toward a comprehensive military cooperation agreement, Türkiye and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on military training and consultancy after talks between their foreign, defense ministers, and intelligence chiefs. The source told reporters in Ankara that the Kurdish-led and US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had not met any of the conditions set out in a March agreement with Damascus on the group's integration into Syria's state apparatus, and added Ankara expected it to urgently respect the deal.

Türkiye, Syria Sign Defense Cooperation MoU after Ankara Talks

The defense ministers of Türkiye and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on military training and consultancy after talks in Ankara on Wednesday, Türkiye's defense ministry said. The neighbors had been negotiating a comprehensive military cooperation agreement for months, after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December. Also, speaking at a news conference in Ankara with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, of undermining the country's efforts to reestablish itself after more than a decade of civil war. He said Israel had 'fueled certain difficulties' in Syria and warned that Israeli security "cannot be achieved through undermining the security of your neighbors." 'To the contrary, you should make sure your neighboring countries are prosperous and secure. If you try to destabilize these countries, if you take steps to that end, this could trigger other crises in the region.' Most recently, hundreds were killed in clashes in the southern province of Sweida between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side and fighters from the Druze minority on the other.
