Malaysia, Poland to boost defence cooperation, explore partnership in trade, green energy, says PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Poland are set to strengthen defence cooperation, including exploring long-term procurement opportunities and strategic engagement between their respective defence ministries, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda of Poland, the Prime Minister said both leaders held extensive discussions on deepening collaboration in defence among other key sectors such as food technology, digital technology, renewable energy and the halal industry.
"I'm pleased to learn that President Duda is heading for Port Dickson today, mainly with the Defence Ministry.
"My policy since assuming the premiership has been very clear - the priority in ascertaining the requirements of the Defence Ministry should rest solely with the professional team,' he said, noting that bilateral defence cooperation has strong potential for growth.
Anwar said that feedback on Polish military equipment, including tanks and the WB Group's electronic systems, has so far been positive.
"I certainly look forward to the proposal by both parties if we could continue and expand, particularly in the new areas of defence, because the Polish government has also disbursed and expanded additional sums of funds to support the industry,' said Anwar.
Anwar also underscored Poland's expertise in green hydrogen and modern food technology, which could complement Malaysia's halal industry and sustainability goals.
"I look forward to enhancing these bilateral relations and your new expertise in green hydrogen,' he said, adding a light-hearted remark about Poland's success in the cosmetics sector.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the encouraging 19.5 per cent year-on-year growth in bilateral trade between 2023 and 2024, calling it a clear reflection of the deepening economic partnership between the two countries.
"We have discussed at great length the expansion of exports, including palm oil, wood, rubber products and electrical and electronics (E&E) as well as collaboration in green hydrogen,' he added.
Anwar said the two countries should continue showcasing their capacity to work together in these diverse fields, particularly in areas where both Malaysia and Poland have strategic advantages.
Duda is on his first official visit to Malaysia, which comes at significant moment - coinciding with Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025.
Earlier, Duda was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar and an official luncheon hosted by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex.
According to Wisma Putra, Duda is also scheduled to visit the Second Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps at the Sunggala Camp, Port Dickson and deliver a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, in Kuala Lumpur.
Duda's visit underscores the robust and friendly relations between Malaysia and Poland, which are founded on mutual respect and close cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971.
In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.66 billion compared to 2023.
Malaysia's primary exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products, and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products, and transport equipment.- Bernama

Sarawak supports Motac's bid to regulate tourism transport after deadly Gerik bus crash
KUCHING (June 12): The federal government's proposal to return regulatory powers over tourism-related transport to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) is a step in the right direction, said Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He said the tragic bus crash in Gerik, Perak, on June 9, which claimed the lives of 15 university students, highlighted serious lapses in transport safety oversight, making any effort to improve public safety both necessary and welcome. 'If that intention becomes a reality and it can improve the roads and the system we are having now, of course I would welcome it. And I think it's not just me, because it's all Malaysians who would welcome it,' he told a press conference at the Baitul Makmur II Building here today. When asked whether Motac has the expertise to take on the responsibility, Abdul Karim said the ministry must develop the right approach on its own. He stressed that the issue is not merely about reallocating responsibility, but about ensuring a coordinated and effective enforcement framework. 'I know it's not easy, because this relates to JPJ (Road Transport Department), technology platforms, enforcement and many agencies are involved but coming up with ideas is one thing. Making sure they work is another,' said Abdul Karim. Citing media reports, he pointed out that the bus driver involved in the crash had 18 outstanding traffic summonses, and the vehicle had more than 20. 'That means something is wrong. So, if there is any entity, be it a ministry or any other body, that can address this problem and make the system better, of course we will support it,' he said. In the aftermath of the crash, Motac renewed its call to regain regulatory authority over tourism vehicles, arguing that the current system, overseen by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), lacks a comprehensive safety framework. The ministry said that the earlier transfer of regulatory powers away from Motac created a void in oversight, weakening Malaysia's transport safety assurance mechanisms, particularly as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The incident has reportedly raised concerns among international stakeholders involved in tourism and student exchange programmes across Asean, the Middle East, China, Japan, and South Korea, potentially affecting Malaysia's image as a safe travel destination.

South Koreans flock to Blue House ahead of presidential return
Tens of thousands of South Koreans poured into the Blue House in northern Seoul on June 9, as it could be their last chance to visit the premise as a new president is poised to return to the former presidential office. - AFP SEOUL: The queue stretches all the way down the road. Tens of thousands of people are flocking to South Korea's historic Blue House before the new president moves his office back in. Ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol spurned the elegant compound in leafy northern Seoul claiming it was too "imperial". He opened it to the public in 2022, and moved into a hastily converted ministry instead. But with Yoon impeached over a failed martial law bid, newly elected Lee Jae-myung plans to move the seat of power back, triggering a frenzy of last-minute visits. "I figured if I missed this chance I would never get to come here," said Jang Myung-hee, 65, who visited with her friends. She said it was the "right call" for South Korea's leaders to resettle in the Blue House as it "befits the nation's prestige". "I can definitely feel this place is different." The building is named for the approximately 150,000 hand-painted blue tiles that adorn its roof. Once occupied by former colonial power Japan, the site has housed South Korea's leaders for seven decades. On the campaign trail, Lee vowed to return. "It is traditional, symbolic and optimal," he told local media. Official figures show visitors to the Blue House surged ahead of the June 3 snap election: around 427,000 in May - double the number from the same month last year. In all, more than 7.8 million people - including 800,000 foreigners - have visited since the site's May 2022 public opening. "I have come here with my kids for educational purposes, as it might be difficult for us to visit again," said Son Young-ah, 49. One woman, upon leaving the main gate muttered: "With this exit, I may never be able to set foot here again." In early 2018, during a period of warmer ties, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister visited the Blue House - the first by the isolated country's ruling Kim family. "I look forward to seeing Pyongyang and Seoul come closer in the minds of Korean people," Kim Yo Jong wrote in the visitors' book. The Blue House has long been the subject of public fascination, fuelled in part by a series of misfortunes that have befallen past inhabitants, including assassinations, impeachments, corruption trials and imprisonments. Yoon's relocation may have been in part an effort to escape such a fate - which some believe is linked to the feng shui of the site. But the change in premises failed to spare his presidency: he was impeached in April after his brief martial law declaration and now faces a criminal trial. Yoon's replacement had little interest in continuing to occupy the former Defence Ministry in central Seoul. The ministry is plagued by "security issues such as wiretapping" and lacks the privacy and seclusion of the Blue House, Lee has said. Not all sections of the storied compound - including its administrative offices and an underground bunker - have been opened to tourists. As such, the site "would only require a bit of renovation to reopen," Choi Gi-il, a former presidential security aid, told AFP. He added that the main blue-tiled building was primarily for ceremonial purposes and hosting foreign dignitaries, making it less vulnerable to security breaches. No date has been announced for the return to Blue House, but visitors to the site felt it was imminent. "I held off coming here because I thought I could come here anytime," Kim Jong-chun, 71, told AFP. But he realised it was now or never after Lee's election. "I came here today for the first time to celebrate my birthday," he said. "For the symbolisms it caries, I deeply support and welcome Lee's decision to return here." - AFP

M'sia secures RM90bil approved investments in 1Q
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) said these investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. 'The results reflect continued investor confidence in the country's clear policies and long-term fundamentals, bucking the trend of cautious international capital flows due to geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility, and the intensifying global competition for fresh investments. 'Foreign investments dominated the investment landscape, contributing RM60.4bil or 67.3% of total investments, while domestic investments accounted for RM29.4bil or 32.7%,' it said. Besides job creation, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said the increase in the Managerial, Technical, and Supervisory index to 46.3% from 44.2% in the same quarter last year reflects the country's success in creating higher-skilled, better-paying jobs. 'With a better integrated Asean economy, which we are working hard on as Asean chair, we are also paving the way for Malaysia's continued positioning as a manufacturing and services hub to this fast-growing 680-million strong region,' he said. He said the investment environment in 2025 is expected to remain challenging due to continued geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds from the US-China trade war. 'Nonetheless, although major markets' protectionist policies and supply chain frictions continue to weigh in on companies' investment decisions, Malaysia's clear policies should be able to attract more investments from Asia's growing economy, which is expected to expand to about 42% of global gross domestic product by 2040,' he said. Besides bringing in good jobs and business opportunities, Mida chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the projects secured by Mida for 1Q25 supported the national effort to build a more diversified and resilient economy. 'To remain a choice location for high-performing companies, we will strengthen our local ecosystem as enablers and prepare our workforce to seize new job and leadership opportunities.' — Bernama
