Wildly incoherent, utterly flummoxing, blissful: how And Just Like That rewrote the rules of TV

Sex and the City's divisive spin-off And Just Like That is set to end after three bizarre seasons and a deluge of critical contempt, with bemused fans losing it on Reddit, and articles about how the programme became a hate watch. There has been little heartache in the discourse after the announcement of the show's demise, the general consensus being: good. But to these people, I say – you're wrong! But also, I understand. There is always an element of fear in contemplating change, in engaging with the rapid advancement of modernity, and I would like to make the case for And Just Like That being a product of exactly that.
It feels analogous to a comment a friend of mine once made during a conversation about the best oven pizzas, when someone posited Dr Oetker pizzas as a contender: 'It's delicious, it's something different, I don't know what it is … but it's not pizza.' This is how I feel about And Just Like That. It's a pleasure to watch, it's fun, it's compelling, I don't know what it is – but it's certainly not TV drama. And Just Like That is something new; I genuinely believe the show has reimagined what television drama is, and how we might engage with it.
I wonder whether And Just Like That represents the end point of television drama's evolution into content – pure content, no longer a strictly narrative format. Many have wondered whether it was covertly written by AI, and I understand this line of thinking, as none of the characters behave like their original characters. In fact, they don't behave like human beings. The dialogue is bizarre (repeated references to comedian Che's 'comedy concert'), while the editing is flummoxing, unnatural and awkward; scenes are abandoned at peculiar moments, new storylines introduced four-fifths of the way into an episode, before quickly fizzling out. The camera moves in jarring sweeps. The minor characters have their own minor characters, and everyone gets a (ridiculous) storyline, with one episode even featuring a monologue by the assistant of the dad of one character, Lisa Todd Wexley. Recently, many pointed out that the show accidentally killed off her dad twice. Watching And Just Like That mirrors the jarring rush of scrolling through Instagram: a wildly incoherent, meaningless and disorienting experience that is distracting enough to ensure you come back for more.
Perhaps part of what makes the show such a joy is that it feels as if you've entered a dream – right down to the fact that plotlines seem to be fuelled by a nonsensical dream logic that flows happily if illogically along. Sure, Charlotte experiences debilitating vertigo that has never been mentioned or referenced previously! Miranda suddenly throws Charlotte a karaoke party after mistakenly believing her dog has cancer – why not?!
The closest experience I can liken watching And Just Like That to is a 'digital art museum' I visited on holiday in Tokyo. You moved between colourful inflated balls the size of zoo animals, and waded through calf-deep warm water, while DayGlo cherry blossoms were projected on to the walls. It was baby sensory play but for adults, and it was heaven. I think perhaps this is what And Just Like That is – a pleasurable sensory experience, intended to induce a sort of ASMR-like bliss.
In my more generous moments, I wonder if some comment is being made, regarding an atomisation that occurs in late middle-age, or regarding the alienation these characters are experiencing as a symptom of being hideously rich, given their drifting apart from one another. Is its lack of narrative throughlineand absence of basic coherence mirroring the dislocating experience of life online? Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain it is not that controlled (Sarah Jessica Parker, lead actor and executive producer, doesn't even watch it). Either way, it has been a pleasurably mindless experience, and at a time in which I have received a very scary diagnosis for my son, I have welcomed my weekly lobotomy with full force. And when it comes back, as I'm almost certain it will, I will feel much the same about it as Donald Trump does about Coca-Cola: I'll still keep drinking that garbage.

Brandon Blackstock's 'loving partner' — who was his ex-wife Kelly Clarkson's assistant — had allegedly cheated on her then-husband with the talent manager, according to a new report. 'He got screwed over due to [Jones and Blackstock's] fling starting during his marriage,' a source told the publication. Daily Mail has reached out to Blackstock's management company, Jones, and LaPoint for comment and has yet to hear back. This comes amid news that 43-year-old Clarkson's late ex-husband Blackstock had a 'loving partner' at the time of his death — Jones, according to his newly published obituary. Blackstock — who was married to Clarkson from 2013 to 2020 and shared daughter River, 11, and son Remington, 9 — died on Aug. 7 at age 48 following a private, years-long battle with melanoma. The obituary, released Tuesday, revealed that Blackstock had been in a relationship with Jones and was quietly building a new life with her in Montana, a fact unknown to many fans. 'After more than 20 years in the music business, Brandon found his way back to the mountains and the cowboy way of life he always wanted to live,' the obituary read. 'He found a homestead and a love in Butte, Montana.' It went on: 'Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.' In a bombshell revelation, a December 2024 report by the US Sun on Blackstock and Jones's rodeo business listed Jones as Clarkson's 'former assistant.' had not received a response to its request for comment from reps for Clarkson earlier this week. A prior LinkedIn profile for Jones highlighted in the 2024 US Sun report reveals she served as an executive assistant to Brandon Blackstock as well as an assistant to Kelly Clarkson while Blackstock managed the singer.

Edinburgh festivals – our best reviews from the second week

Our reviewers have been busy out and about at the Fringe and the International Festival this week. And they have found some four (and five) star gems. All of our Festival coverage can be read over here. Ahir Shah: Work in Progress Ahir Shah has become an established Fringe performer. After a series of nominations, he finally won the main Comedy Award in 2023. On the back of his Fringe successes, he's become a regular media figure, featuring on BBC Radio 4 (Ahir Shah's 7 Blunders of the World) and also has had HBO and Netflix specials. This year Shah is performing a limited series of shows (14 -24), advertised as a work in progress but very much on course to becoming a fully realised show. Read more here. Orpheus and Eurydice Despite the richness of the English language, I think there are not enough superlatives to praise the creation of this rendition of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice. From the very opening where we see the superb funambulist as Eurydice descend twisting into the underworld hanging from a harness to the final dénouement, the staging was outstanding, the music perfection, the singing immensely moving, and the acrobatics stunning. Writing in 1976, the historian Owen Dudley Edwards suggested that 'there is little of Edinburgh, and even less of Scotland in the Festival'. Many see the Festival and Fringe as something imposed from outside on the people of Edinburgh. Such narratives persist. It's also widely argued that working class voices are marginalised within the Fringe. Especially, in the sphere of comedy, the Fringe is often seen as London-centric and dominated by middle class voices and perspectives. There are, fortunately, exceptions. Running for four more nights only, John McColl's new play at Braw Venues on George Street opened to much hearty laughter and rapturous applause from a largely local audience, an element of the warm reception no doubt down to the presence of Braveheart and River City legend Jimmy Chisholm, leading the cast as Ghillie. Flamenco Guitar Odyssey If you're a bit worn out by all the noise and crowds of the festival city, why not take a break to visit Alba Flamenca on East Crosscauseway and enjoy some beautiful music? Philip Adie started life in Aberdeen, perhaps not somewhere we generally associate with flamenco, but for the past 25 years he has lived in mainland Europe, first studying under flamenco master Paco Pena in Rotterdam, then moving to Seville where he works as a flamenco guitarist. Britney Spears ' ex-husband Sam Asghari had some choice words about Kevin Federline's upcoming memoir, titled You Thought You Knew. When TMZ caught up with the 31-year-old actor in Los Angeles on Friday, he shared his thoughts on the forthcoming tell-all. Sam took a swipe at the 47-year-old father-of-six — who shares two sons with Britney, 43 — as he told the outlet, 'Well, he was a professional father so he would be a great... it would be the first book that'll tell you how to be a professional father.' The Iranian-born model seemed to be alluding to the child support payments he received from the pop star. Kevin has had majority custody of Sean, 19, and Jayden, 18, since October 2007. After 17 years, the singer's final $20,000 child support payment to Kevin was made in November 2024. Britney and Kevin were married from 2004-2007, and she went on to tie the knot with Sam in June 2022. The couple separated over one year later in August 2023, and the divorce was finalized in May 2024. Sam is now dating real estate agent Brooke Irvine, with whom he went Instagram official in December 2024. Fans of the Toxic singer used social media to slam Kevin for the 'cash grab' move after after he announced his plans to release his book this fall. He said in a press release that the literary effort will reveal 'extremely intimate and transparent' details about their 'highly publicized marriage.' 'I achieved my biggest dreams, dealt with crushing heartbreak and endured constant ridicule, all while becoming the father my children needed as they experienced non-stop emotional turbulence,' the former backup dancer detailed. One person wrote on Reddit, 'That child support dried up real quick,' while another agreed, 'His timing tells you everything.' But on Saturday, the Fresno, California native seemingly responded to the backlash as he reposted a note of support from Hawaii media personality Ryan Kalei Tsuji. Sharing Kevin's book cover, Ryan wrote, 'I've watched Kevin stay silent while the world picked him apart. I've seen the toll it's taken on him and his family as lies spread unchecked, all while he chose not to defend himself.' Kevin seemingly responded to the backlash as he reposted a note of support from Hawaii media personality Ryan Kalei Tsuji on Saturday The message continued, 'Instead, he poured his energy into being a father, showing up for his kids, giving them stability, and protecting their peace in the middle of chaos.' In addition to his two boys with Britney, Kevin also shares daughter Kori, 23, and son Kaleb, 21, with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson. He's also raising daughters Jordan, 14, and Peyton, 11, with wife Victoria Prince, whom he wed in 2013. Ryan's note went on, 'This isn't a tell-all meant to wound anyone. It's Kevin finally allowing himself the chance to share his truth after years of being misrepresented. He deserves that. His family deserves that.' The last part of the post read, 'Before you judge, before you assume you already know the story, I encourage you to read with an open mind. 'I've seen firsthand how love and sacrifice [have] provided the stability and normalcy his family deserves.' Kevin's press release read, 'The public unraveling of Britney's life and the constant attention around their family forced Kevin to balance being a father with being a protector.' His memoir will arrive almost exactly two years after Britney published a memoir of her own, The Woman in Me. It hit shelves on October 23, 2023 and contained details about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake as well as her 13-year conservatorship.
