Cops seize RM18mil worth of drugs in major bust
KUALA LUMPUR : Police have dismantled a major drug trafficking syndicate after seizing nearly 440kg of drugs worth an estimated RM17.78 million in what is believed to be the largest drug bust in Malaysia so far this year.
Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department director Hussein Omar Khan said police confiscated 225 packages of methamphetamine weighing 234kg and 200 packages of ketamine weighing 205.7kg during a raid at a terrace house in Taman Sri Hartamas here on July 29.
'The estimated market value of the drugs is around RM17.78 million… I believe this is the largest seizure in the country so far this year,' he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters here.
Hussein said the drugs, which were believed to have been smuggled by land from a neighbouring country, were concealed in packets resembling Chinese tea.
He said a man who was arrested during the raid was believed to have acted as both coordinator and transporter for the syndicate, and had used the house as a drug storage facility.
Police also seized two cars, a ring, a bracelet, three watches, and a mobile phone, all valued at RM93,350.
The suspect was remanded for six days starting July 30.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
In a separate case, Hussein said police seized over RM1.48 million worth of cannabis buds following the arrest of four suspects, including three Vietnamese nationals, during a raid at an apartment in Taman Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park on July 29.

According to Hakemal, a total of 288 raids were conducted during the same period across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. This resulted in the arrest of 1,005 individuals and seizures worth RM1.1 billion, he said, adding that the success proved the GOF's commitment to combating crimes that threaten the country's security and well-being. Foiled in Setia Alam: Snatch thief caught after botched necklace grab
SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. 'Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. Two-year-old boy found dead in sewer after falling through manhole in Sibu
SIBU, Aug 5 — A two-year-old boy was found dead in a sewer after he is believed to have fallen through a manhole at Jalan Pedada here yesterday. A Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre spokesperson said the victim, identified as Ehthin Ling, was confirmed dead at the scene by the Ministry of Health's personnel. The JBPM received a distress call at 6.29pm and dispatched a team of 10 firefighters from the Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station, arriving at the scene four minutes later. 'Upon arrival, the boy's father informed the rescue team that his son had gone missing and was believed to have fallen into the sewer system. A search and rescue operation was immediately launched. 'At 6.55pm, the victim's body was found floating inside the sewer and was retrieved. The body was handed over to the police,' the spokesperson said. — Bernama
