MCD catches, relocates 160 stray dogs in three-day drive following SC order
She added that the drive to catch and relocate strays will intensify after August 15. 'A total of 160 stray dogs have been picked up from the high-security area in a three-day drive, which started on Monday,' said Ms. Sharma.
The MCD panel chief added, 'Till August 15, municipal employees and the non-profit organisations we work with for the capture and sterilisation of stray dogs have been asked to prioritise the capture of aggressive canines. This is because we currently have limited space to keep dogs.' Ms. Sharma said the civic body is looking at community centres, unused school buildings, and other suitable spaces to create dog shelters, and meetings are being scheduled with the Delhi Development Authority and the Delhi government to identify more spaces for the relocation of stray dogs.
A senior official said the municipality has identified two land parcels — three acres in Dwarka Sector 29 and 82 acres in Ghogha — that are available for setting up dog shelters. 'Further deliberations are under way,' he added.
The official added that directions have been issued to animal birth control (ABC) centres, where stray animals are sterilised and immunised, not to release the current batch of captured canines.
The MCD runs 20 ABCs, each of which houses several dog kennels. However, seven ABCs are inoperative due to ongoing repair works, lack of funds and shortfall in employees. The ABCs put together can accommodate around 2,000-2,500 dogs, the official added. As per the municipality's latest estimate, there are 10 lakh stray dogs in the national capital.
The Supreme Court had on August 11 directed the MCD and the Delhi government to capture stray dogs, detain them in pounds, and ensure that they are not released back into public spaces.

Meanwhile, animal rights activists thanked Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai for agreeing to list a case regarding a May 2024 order to treat stray canines with compassion.
Ambika Shukla, who works with People for Animals, said, 'We are deeply grateful to the CJI for taking note of this. His intervention could mean a stay on the relocation order until the matter is heard. We are hopeful that every side will be given a fair hearing before any legal decision.'
Former Union Minister Vijay Goel on Wednesday said he will soon convene a meeting of Delhi's residents' welfare associations at Talkatora Stadium to discuss further course of action in the wake of Monday's order. 'We urge the Centre to implement the order strictly,' he said. The former Delhi BJP chief, who has led a two-year drive for the relocation of stray dogs, has been demanding compensation for the victims of dog attacks.

In Kangpokpi district, a search in the forest near Phaikot village led to the recovery of five Pompis, one rifle, three IEDs, and three radio sets. It further added that, in Kakching district, security forces seized one INSAS rifle with magazine, two single-barrel bolt-action rifles, one modified 9mm pistol with magazine, one HE grenade without detonator, two tube launchers, three tear smoke shells, 62 live rounds of various calibres, two helmets, one iron bulletproof plate, and three bulletproof vests from Lairokching near Puksi Lairembi Temple. A joint operation along the Uchathol–Phaitol stretch in Jiribam and Tamenglong districts resulted in the recovery of two SBBL rifles, two DBBL rifles, one pump-action SBBL rifle, two No. 36 hand grenades, 50 AK live rounds, three radio sets, and two detonators. On August 14, security forces apprehended Hidam Aboy Singh, 30, of Nongren Mayai Leikai, an active cadre of KCP (MFL), from Tairenpokpi Makha Leikai for alleged involvement in extortion and kidnapping for ransom. On August 13, police arrested another KCP (PWG) cadre, Thokchom Premjit Singh, 23, alias BOC, of Khumbong Laingam Khul, from his residence, recovering four demand letters, four money-receipt memos of the outfit, and a mobile phone. AMC job scam: Appointments of 8 more terminated, police plaint likely
Ahmedabad: An ongoing investigation by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) into a recruitment scam that first came to light in Dec last year has revealed that eight more candidates had secured jobs through fraudulent means. The appointees include an assistant surveyor, a sub-inspector, three assistant sanitary sub-inspectors, a pharmacist, and two female health workers. The municipal commissioner on Thursday issued an order to terminate all eight. A police complaint will be filed against them. Pulkit Sathwara, a senior clerk and DTP operator at AMC's central office, who was found guilty of fraud following the 2024 fraudulent appointments, also faces a fresh police complaint, AMC officials said. Dharashiv double-murder accused father-son duo arrested from Pune
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Within 24 hours of a farmer couple being murdered in public in Dharashiv on Wednesday morning, the local crime branch apprehended the accused father-son duo in the early hours of Thursday from Janta Vasahat in Pune city. The preliminary investigation revealed the deceased farmer couple — 37-year-old Sahdev Pawar and his wife, Priyanka (28) — and the accused — Hariba Chavan (50) and his son, Jeevan (30) — were friends who became adversaries. Police said the victims and the accused had their farms and homes situated adjacent to each other, and the families had always maintained a good rapport. Local crime branch inspector Vinod Ijjapwar said shortly after the murder, the accused duo left their car at the scene and, riding a bike, reached their close relative's house in Pune. "After being arrested, the accused said they feared Sahdev might murder them, so they decided to eliminate him before he could strike," Ijjapwar said. An FIR against the accused men was registered at the Bembli police station based on a complaint lodged by Priyanka's father. Eyewitnesses told the police that the victims' bodies remained on the road for over an hour before they were lifted and taken to the hospital, where they were declared dead.
