Second special train for BSF reaches Agartala after video shows filthy coaches

Hindustan Times3 days ago

NEW DELHI: Around 1,200 personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) were finally set to board a second special train that will take them to Jammu on Wednesday evening, two days after the first train sent to pick them up was found to be unfit for passengers.
The 13 companies of BSF, which will be deployed along the route of the Amarnath Yatra, were to board the train from Agartala and Udaipur (both in Tripura), and Silchar and Guwahati (in Assam). After the first train sent by Indian Railways for their travel on Monday was found to be in poor shape, officials aware of the matter said the railways sent another train from Jammu.
A BSF officer aware of the matter said: 'Around 1200 jawans were set to leave from different parts of Northeast India to Jammu. The train was to start on Monday night from Udaipur in Tripura and pick up other jawans from different places along the way. The train arrived on Monday evening and was inspected by senior BSF officials. There is always an inspection by senior officers before the jawans board the special train.'
It was during this routine inspection that the officers found the train filthy, with many coaches sporting holes in the ceiling and non-functional toilets. The doors had holes, locks weren't working, and some seats were missing upholstery.
Videos of the train did the round on social media.
A BSF officer confirmed the authenticity of the videos. 'But contrary to reports, it is not the jawans who refused to board the train. Much before they were supposed to board the train, the inspection was conducted by the senior officers. The railways were then alerted about the condition of the train,' added this person who asked not to be named.
The 1,200 jawans are part of the additional teams of security forces deployed for the Amarnath Yatra duty. The yatra, to be conducted from July 3 to August 9, is being held amid a high alert following Operation Sindoor and heightened security preparations in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack two months ago.
The duration of the Yatra this year is shorter - 38 days in comparison to last year's 52.
The Union home ministry has sanctioned an additional 581 companies of paramilitary forces for the pilgrimage, which is the highest to date. Last year, the number was around 510. The 581 companies include all the central armed police forces.
'Railways minister Ashwin Vaishnaw has taken serious note of the incident involving the deployment of an unsuitable/old train for BSF personnel going for duty to Kashmir from Tripura. In response to the lapse, four officials from the Alipurduar Division have been placed under immediate suspension with effect from today. The suspended officials include the caching depot officer of Alipurduar and three senior section engineers of Alipurduar Division.
'The railways minister has made it clear that the dignity and comfort of security forces are of the utmost priority and that such negligence will not be tolerated at any level,' the rail ministry said in a statement.
It stated that a special train from Agartala was arranged exclusively for BSF personnel, 'with full attention to their convenience and honour'. The rail ministry has also ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.

Bombay HC defers Celebi's appeal against Mumbai Airport's contract termination, awaits Delhi HC ruling

The Bombay High Court on Friday (June 13, 2025) has adjourned till July 10, 2025, the hearing of the petition filed by Celebi NAS Airport Services India Pvt Ltd, a Turkish-Indian joint venture providing ground handling services for airlines at various Indian airports, that has challenged the termination of its services by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL). The firm that has been providing services at various Indian airports, has faced multiple legal battles in Mumbai, Delhi, Gujarat and Chennai. On Friday, a Division Bench of Justices B. P. Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla was informed that overall, seven airports in India have cancelled the services of the Turkish airlines services firm and its subsidiaries. Representing the Union government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted to the Bench that the Turkish aviation firm has already filed similar petitions in the Delhi High Court and the Madras High Court seeking relief. 'The Delhi High Court has reserved its order after hearing extensive arguments from both sides. Thus, the Madras High Court has passed an order stating it will await the judgment of the Delhi High Court, since similarly worded arguments are made before Delhi High Court and its findings will have an impact on the issues in all the petitions,' Mr. Mehta told the judges and requested the Bench to consider passing a similar order and defer its proceedings until the Delhi High Court pronounces its verdict. Appearing for Celebi, senior advocate Chetan Kapadia, agreed with the Solicitor General's submission. The Bench considered the request and noted that it will wait for the Delhi High Court's verdict and adjourned the hearing till July 10, 2025. On May 26, 2025, the Bombay High Court restrained MIAL from finalising bids on May 17, to appoint a new agency and replace Çelebi's subsidiary for ground and bridge handling services at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The High Court said that its order will operate until the matter is heard by a regular Bench after the vacation. Celebi moved the Bombay High Court after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, revoked its security clearance on the grounds of national security, amid heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Turkey, particularly over Turkey's stand in support of Pakistan during the Operation Sindoor. Celebi has filed three petitions, challenging the Centre's decision to revoke the security clearance and contract termination by the MIAL, terming the termination 'arbitrary' and 'illegal'.

Back-to-back security review meetings held in Kashmir for safe Amarnath Yatra

Back to back security review meetings are being held in Kashmir for safe and secure Amarnath Yatra. In the past six days over a half a dozen security meetings were held in the Valley for the safe and secure Amarnath yatra which begins next month. Today, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also chaired a high-level security review meeting ahead of Amarnath yatra. The Lieutenant Governor took a comprehensive review of the security apparatus and measures deployed by the security agencies to ensure safety of the pilgrims. Sinha directed for seamless coordination among the Civil Administration, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, J&K Police, Army, Security Forces, and all the other crucial stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and successful holy pilgrimage. 'The Lieutenant Governor reviewed the working of the security grid and various significant steps being taken by Army, CAPFs and J&K Police to ensure foolproof security for the Yatra. The Lieutenant Governor also reviewed the contingency plan, deployment of police and security personnel, preparedness and response mechanism of line departments and emphasized on better coordination among all stakeholders involved in yatra management,' the J&K government spokesman said. Sinha on Wednesday had urged devotees to visit in large numbers as foolproof security arrangements are in place for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Sinha, accompanied by senior officers, performed the 'Pratham Puja', which marked the ceremonial beginning of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Sinha also took stock of the arrangements at the Shrine. This year, Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3, simultaneously from both the routes – the Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district-- and it will culminate on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The security will be further beefed up this year due to the attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22 when terrorists killed 26 tourists at Baisran, Pahalgam. More CRPF companies will be deployed on the yatra routes and the entire trek on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes are being searched on a daily basis. Even J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah recently said a safe and secure yatra will be the top priority of his government.

Sepahijela (Tripura) [India], June 13 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) in a joint operation with the Railway Police, arrested three Bangladeshi nationals from Agartala and Ambassa Railway station, according to a release on Friday. Bangladeshi nationals are residents of the Khulna and Netrakona districts of Bangladesh. In a separate operation, BSF troops posted at Boxanagar under Sepahijala district in Tripura arrested one Indian national and seized 48 kg of Ganja from his possession, the release stated. Intensifying search operation, to prevent infiltration, BSF troops posted at Koylatilla under Sepahijela district, in a separate operation in hinterland and seized one pick-up vehicle loaded with 275 mobile phones of various brands worth Rs 65 Lakhs Earlier, the vigilant jawans of BSF South Bengal Frontier foiled a major smuggling attempt on the Indo-Bangladesh International Border in Nadia district of West Bengal and recovered 21,00,000 Bangladeshi Taka, 340 bottles of Phensedyl and 11 kg of Ganja. This action was made possible by the vigilance and prompt response of jawans at the border, who quickly acted on information about suspicious activity and foiled the smugglers' plans, BSF said in a press release. 'Yesterday, on June 8, the jawans of Border Outpost Gongra of 161 Battalion of BSF deployed on the Indo-Bangladesh International Border in Nadia district of West Bengal received secret information that illegal items could be smuggled from the area of the border outpost. Acting on the received intelligence, the jawans of the Border Outpost devised a plan to catch the smugglers red-handed and set up ambushes at highly sensitive locations. Around 3 a.m., they noticed suspicious movements near the fencing, where several smugglers were hiding in a banana orchard. The jawans immediately sprang into action, attempting to surround the suspects and warning them to stop,' a South Bengal Frontier BSF official said. BSF official further said that after realising they were encircled by BSF personnel, the smugglers panicked and, taking advantage of the darkness and the dense banana plantation, managed to flee. Upon receiving information about the incident, a thorough search operation was launched across the area, but no trace of the smugglers could be found. (ANI)
