CM Omar Abdullah scales wall to pay tribute to July 13 martyrs after being barred by authorities
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was accompanied by Deputy CM Surinder Kumar Choudhary, CM's Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, cabinet ministers Javed Dar and Sakina Itoo, NC president Farooq Abdullah, party spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq and several other party leaders and legislators. They paid floral tributes at the martyrs' graveyard near the Naqshband Sahib shrine, which had been heavily barricaded by security forces.
In a defiant move that quickly went viral on social media, Omar Abdullah scaled a wall and jumped a barricade to access the graveyard, followed closely by his security detail and other party members.
'These people think that we are their slaves. We are not their slaves; we are the servants of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,' Omar told reporters at the site.
He said that despite not notifying the authorities of his visit, attempts were made to block his movement once again. 'A security vehicle was parked in Nowhatta Chowk to block our movement. Which law allows them to stop elected representatives from paying tribute to martyrs? Is this democracy or dictatorship?' he asked.

Agency: PTI Srinagar, Aug 12 (PTI) National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah Tuesday condemned the vandalisation of a Sufi tomb in Uttar Pradesh, calling it a deliberate attempt to inflame communal passions and undermine the country's secular foundations. Members of Hindu right-wing outfits created a ruckus at a mausoleum in Fatehpur district on Monday, claiming it to be a temple site where they had the right to pray. Police booked more than 150 people for damaging public property and disturbing the peace. 'The desecration of any place of worship is unacceptable, but the targeting of a Sufi shrine, which represents India's age-old tradition of syncretic culture and spiritual inclusivity, is particularly distressing, Abdullah said in a statement. He called the incident a 'deliberate attempt" to inflame communal passions and undermine the country's secular foundations. 'This is not just an attack on a tomb but on the very idea of India as a land where multiple faiths have coexisted peacefully for centuries," he said. Abdullah said Sufi shrines and tombs across the country have long stood as symbols of communal harmony, drawing people from all religions, castes and backgrounds. These sites embody India's unique blend of spiritual traditions and must be preserved as shared heritage, he said. The NC president warned that such actions not only provoke unrest but also play into the hands of those trying to divide the nation. 'Such acts sow seeds of discord and intolerance, which are detrimental to the unity and peace of the country," he said, adding, 'I urge both the UP government and the central authorities to identify and punish the culprits without delay." There must be no leniency towards those who seek to disrupt communal harmony, he added. Abdullah also called upon religious and community leaders to collectively denounce such acts and work toward strengthening the values of tolerance and coexistence. 'India's strength lies in its diversity. We must stand united against hatred and ensure that no one is allowed to damage the soul of our nation," he added. ‘Tiranga Rally' in Srinagar celebrates unity, CM Omar Abdullah says Tricolour is our identity
A largely attended 'Tiranga Rally' led by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was held on Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar city to celebrate the spirit of unity ahead of the country's Independence Day celebrations. The L-G's office quoted Manoj Sinha on X, saying, 'Flagged off Tiranga Yatra from Dal Lake. Thousands of people proudly joined to honour national flag, which symbolizes our unity, pride & shared identity. Paid tributes to our forefathers & brave hearts who laid down their lives to keep the Tricolour flying high in its full glory." 'Today is the day to celebrate success of our great nation, however, we should also introspect about our duties & build on our successes. We must also resolve to build the edifice of modern & prosperous J&K on the foundation of sacrifices of our soldiers of Army, CAPFs & Police. Tiranga is my Dharma. Tiranga is my strength. Tiranga is my heartbeat. For the sake of duty, may we again and again take birth on this holy land!' the L-G further said. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who attended the event, said that earlier Tricolour was only hoisted on government buildings, but now all do it. The office of the chief minister said on X, 'At Tiranga rally, Chief Minister highlighted the National Flag's message of unity, peace & harmony. He said the Tiranga embodies India's strength in diversity and called upon all to uphold its ideals of secularism & brotherhood.' CM Abdullah said, 'Earlier, the national flag could only be hoisted at government properties. One person embarked to change this. From where, he got this motivation? He went to the US for studies, saw his peers having flags of their countries in their rooms, but he could not do it. He came back, started fighting, went to the courts, and secured the decision to allow hoisting at home. The gist is that one can bring change on their own. We should uphold the prestige of the national flag; it is our identity, and we should respect it.' Hundreds of people including ministers of J&K government, senior civil and police officers, school children, sportspersons, prominent citizens and above all, the common Kashmiris turned out in large numbers to attend the Tiranga Rally and become a part of the national integration and unity of the country which is the driving force of this nation cutting across regions, religions, languages and ethnicities. The security arrangements were made in such a way that the ordinary citizen felt comfortable while becoming a part of this historic event. Each participant carried the national flag while balloons carrying national flags rose from the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, where the rally was held. A boat show, cultural programmes and other events marked the conclusion of the rally as the participants went home carrying a smile on their faces and a rekindled resolve in their hearts and minds that makes every Indian a proud citizen of this largest democracy in the world.
