'Dubai is always ahead': Mallathon to help stay fit in summer heat, say athletes

Khaleej Times4 days ago
A wave of excitement is building among UAE residents and local athletes as they prepare for the inaugural ' Dubai Mallathon' initiative. The initiative launched by Sheikh Hamdan, which transforms the city's iconic shopping malls into indoor fitness tracks daily from 7am to 10am, has generated tremendous enthusiasm from community members seeking new, climate-controlled spaces for their morning workouts.
The innovative initiative offers residents a unique solution to maintain their fitness routines during the challenging summer months, providing air-conditioned environments that shield fitness enthusiasts from the region's intense heat.
Ras Al Khaimah's accomplished long-distance runner, Abdulla AlShehhi, expressed his enthusiasm for the programme. 'The Dubai Mallathon initiative marks a significant step in promoting a healthy lifestyle during the summer, especially for us as runners. Transforming shopping malls into walking and running tracks is a smart idea that provides a safe and comfortable environment, encouraging everyone to stay consistent even in hot weather," he said.
AlShehhi, who is currently preparing for the upcoming Sydney Marathon at the end of August, sees the timing as perfect. 'This initiative couldn't have come at a better time. It offers an ideal indoor environment to train effectively, beat the summer heat, and stay committed to our fitness goals throughout the season,' he added.
The runner praised Dubai's forward-thinking approach, 'Initiatives like this prove that Dubai is always ahead when it comes to integrated community thinking. I'm personally excited to take part, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity.'
Talal from Sharjah, who practices various sports including swimming and running, highlighted the practical benefits of the initiative, 'Running inside malls provides an air-conditioned and suitable environment for exercising away from harsh weather conditions, especially in summer. It also provides a level and safe surface and allows friends and family to participate together. It improves heart and muscle health and helps burn calories.'
Running coach Fuad Naser, founder of the 5:30 RUN club in the UAE, praised the initiative's innovative approach, 'The 'Dubai Mallathon' is a brilliant and well-conceived initiative that showcases Dubai's commitment to public health and innovative solutions.'
Naser emphasized the programme's broader impact: 'It effectively addresses a unique environmental challenge while promoting a vibrant, active, and connected community. HH Faz3's leadership in launching such a practical and beneficial programme is highly commendable, setting a new benchmark for urban wellness initiatives.'
The coach concluded with high praise for the initiative's contribution to Dubai's reputation: 'It's a fantastic step towards keeping Dubai truly the 'best place to live, work, and visit.''
The Dubai Mallathon represents a creative solution to the UAE's climate challenges, offering residents and visitors alike an opportunity to maintain active lifestyles year-round.
By repurposing existing infrastructure during off-peak hours, the initiative demonstrates Dubai's commitment to innovative urban planning and community wellness.
The program is expected to attract fitness enthusiasts of all levels, from casual walkers to serious athletes preparing for international competitions, creating a diverse and inclusive fitness community within the city's retail spaces.
As announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, the Dubai Mallathon initiative transforms shopping centers into fitness venues during morning hours, reinforcing Dubai's position as a leader in innovative community health programs.

Sheikh Hamdan promoted to Lieutenant General by UAE President

President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has issued a federal decree promoting His Highness Sheikh Hamdan to the rank of Lieutenant General. Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, was made Lieutenant General today, 29 July. His promotion further solidifies his growing role in the UAE's leadership and national defense strategy. The decree reflects continued trust in Sheikh Hamdan's leadership across both civic and military domains, as the UAE strengthens its security, development, and global presence. The appointment will come as no shock to those who have kept a close eye on the young royals career. In July of 2024, Sheikh Hamdan was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE. He was also appointed as Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates on 14 July 2024, succeeding his father, Dubai Ruler, His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who held this designation since the formation of the UAE in 1971. Dubai Mallathon launched While Sheikh Hamdan continues to make his mark in leadership roles, the royal has not neglected his other passions. Known to encourage healthier lifestyles for Dubai's residents, he recently launched a mallathon. With the current heat in Dubai reaching 40C and above, motivation for fitness can sometimes be a challenge and stepping outside can feel like a workout in itself when the hot air hits your skin and the humidity follows right after like a bullet train. However, the Dubai leader is encouraging health and wellness and recently announced the launch of 'Dubai Mallathon'. The community based initiative is aimed at promoting public health and encouraging people to engage in physical activity during the summer. Dedicated walking and running tracks have been introduced in seven of Dubai's malls including Dubai Mall, Dubai Hills Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina Mall, Springs Souk, City Centre Deira, and City Centre Mirdif. The malls have been transformed into fitness hubs before they open for business for the day. You can use the fitness tracks from 7am to 10am every day in August with 10k runs, 5k runs, 2.5k runs and any pace walks. Northrop and Casey set JGE's Fire Course ablaze in nail-biting Jumeirah Pairs thriller

Jumeirah Golf Estates' Fire course set the stage for a fiercely competitive edition of the Monthly Jumeirah Pairs, sponsored by The Brain & Performance Centre – a DP World Company. Played in a Pairs Shambles format, the competition took place from the Composite Tees for men and the Forward Tees for women. Competition was intense, with a three-way back-nine countback required to determine the podium positions. However, the standout round of the day came from the winning duo of Harry Northrop and Kieran Casey, who triumphed by two strokes after a round of 12 under par, net 60. Their round featured six consecutive birdies on the front nine, as well as a net eagle on the par-4 15th hole. Casey said, 'The condition of the Fire course was superb, and the Jumeirah Golf Estates Agronomy Team should be proud of their efforts this summer. I cannot imagine it has been easy for them in the heat, but they continue, day in and day out, to present us Members with fantastic playing surfaces and a truly prestigious golf course.' Thee-way tie Determining the runners-up was far more contentious, with three pairs tied at 10 under par, net 62 – all delivering impressive performances. After the back-nine, back-six, back-three, and final-hole countbacks, Richard Green and Martin Stewart, as well as Bradley Valentine and Andrew Turnbull, could not be separated and were declared joint runners-up – a tremendously competitive and close finish for both pairings. Commiserations went to the father-son duo of Neil and Charles Gallagher, who also shot 10 under par, net 62, but missed the podium by the narrowest of margins. In the Gross Division, Mark Schoombie and Jacob Wissum delivered a superb performance with their bogey-free round of 66, six under par. The pair claimed victory by two strokes. The on-course competitions, all sponsored by The Brain and Performance Centre, added another layer of excitement to the day. Pin Perfect Half of the Gross-winning pair, Mark Schoombie, won Nearest the Pin on the par-3 8th with a brilliant shot landing just three feet from the hole, setting up partner Wissum for an easy tap-in birdie. Martin Stewart made his way to the stage for the second time in the evening, claiming Nearest the Pin in Two on the 10th. Alan McNamara took home the Nearest the Pin prize on the tricky par-3 14th after a superb tee shot that finished just inches from the hole. Grateful for Support During the prize presentation, Cameron McWhinnie, Assistant Golf Services Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, reflected on the day: 'Despite the Dubai summer heat providing a challenge, it is great to see such an attendance for this popular event on the JGE calendar. Special thanks, as always, goes to our sponsor of the Jumeirah Pairs – The Brain & Performance Centre – a DP World Company.'
