Khaleej Times29-07-2025
Despite the sweltering summer heat, golfers turned out in strong numbers for the Orient Travel Monthly Stableford at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club on Saturday.
Emerging victorious was Shayan Mohammed, who impressed with a stellar round featuring six net birdies and two net eagles to finish four-under-par and accumulate 40 Stableford points.
Shayan's performance secured him the top spot and earned him coveted prizes generously provided by the Saudi Tourism Authority, the event's proud sponsor.
Close behind was Samiuddin Siddiqui, who posted 39 Stableford points. Despite narrowly missing out on first place, Samiuddin's excellent round earned him the runner-up position. Shagir Mohammed also scored 39 points, claiming third place after another consistent performance.
'I'm really proud of the way I played today, everything just clicked,' said Mohammed. 'The course was in great shape despite the heat, and I'm grateful to the club and sponsors for putting on such a fantastic event. It's always special to come out on top in an event like this.'
In the Gross Division, Sami Butt led the field with 34 points to take the top prize.
The Orient Travel Monthly Stableford continues to be a highlight on the club's calendar, thanks in large part to the generous support of its sponsors and the enthusiastic participation of its members.

Asia Cup in UAE: Fake tickets worth over Dh11,000 being sold for India-Pakistan clash

Since the much-awaited Asia Cup schedule was announced earlier this week, fans have been waiting for an official announcement on tickets with bated breath. Cricket rivals India and Pakistan will be facing each other on the field on September 14 during the group-stage matches. Fans across the cricketing world follow every ball when the two clash on a cricket field. Tickets for the highly anticipated game often sell out in no time. Last time, when India and Pakistan faced each other in the UAE for the ICC Champions Trophy, many queued for at least an hour before realising that all tickets for the clash were gone. If you're among those cricket fanatics attempting to get their hands on a pass this time, you should keep an eye out for potential scammers. Some websites offering fake tickets have already gone live. Elaborate scam A simple Google search by Khaleej Times with the words 'Asia Cup tickets India Pakistan' revealed a flurry of websites offering passes to the game. Some were even 'sponsored' websites being displayed at ideal locations on the Google search page. Their ideal location on the search page makes it much easier for an unsuspecting fan to click on the website and fall victim to a scam. One website is offering a single 'VIP' pass for over Dh11,000. Other reselling websites are also offering the passes inflated rates. 'General Admission' passes begin at over Dh1,500 on these websites. Take a look at some of these websites offering them, below: Official tickets, however, are not yet being sold. So far, there has been no announcement on when tickets will be released, although fans expect the passes to go on sale soon. Authorities in UAE have time and again issued adviories and warnings, urging residents to avoid clicking on suspicious links.

How The Universal Golf Rankings are shaking up the world of men's professional golf

Over the past couple of years, particularly in this newsletter and across the broader golf conversation, we have regularly featured articles on global golf rankings, with a focus on men's professional golf. This week, we're taking a deep dive into the Universal Golf Rankings, known as TUGR. With the introduction of LIV Golf, the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system has come under heavy scrutiny, to put it kindly. Many argue it no longer fairly reflects the current state of the professional game. TUGR was launched as a direct response to the OWGR's omission of LIV Golf players competing in the LIV Golf League. Much of the noise has focused on the OWGR, while other aspects of the game, particularly the women's tours, are already well-covered by the LPGA, LET, and other global circuits, ensuring inclusion for all players and tours. TUGR was introduced in 2023 to promote a level playing field, built on the pillars of: accuracy, fairness, inclusivity, simplicity, transparency, and trust. Its rankings are based on an 18-month cycle, using a methodology that compares players directly against each other, purely on performance, not based on points, course difficulty, or score relative to par. This is the key difference from the OWGR and aligns more closely with the modern "Strokes Gained" systems used globally. The published results are always interesting and open to scrutiny, as has been the case since the launch of the OWGR in 1986. Of course, objective analysis can always be debated subjectively. Can one ranking system ever truly be accepted by the world of professional men's golf? Only time will tell, but ultimately, accuracy and trust will be the deciding factors for fans, players, and governing bodies. It's worth noting, though unsurprising, that LIV Golf has officially adopted TUGR rankings as a qualifying method for player entry into its annual LIV Golf Promotions tournament. Here is the current TUGR Top 10 (OWGR ranking in parentheses): 1. Scottie Scheffler (1), 2. Jon Rahm (71), 3. Rory McIlroy (2), 4. Bryson DeChambeau (16), 5. Tommy Fleetwood (15), 6. Joaquin Niemann (98), 7. Collin Morikawa (6), 8. Russell Henley (5), 9. Xander Schauffele (3), 10. Justin Thomas (4). Just a personal opinion: we're not entirely sure even Jon Rahm would agree that he's played better than Rory McIlroy over the past 18 months. These are fascinating times for the sport, as traditional golf authorities are being challenged at the very core of the game. Will the industry unite under a single system, or allow third-party rankings like TUGR to prove their credibility? Market forces may ultimately determine the "survival of the fittest" — or perhaps multiple rankings will become the new normal. TUGR has also invested in a Global Junior Rankings system to support junior players, parents, and coaches, with a focus on golf scholarship admissions and comparative analytics. We'll explore that TUGR Junior component in next week's edition.
