Independent01-04-2025

Irish actors Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, and British stars Harris Dickinson and Joseph Quinn are set to portray The Beatles band members in four upcoming films.
Each of the movies will showcase one of the members of The Fab Four, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and be directed by British filmmaker Sir Sam Mendes.
They are expected to be released in April 2028.
Here we take a closer look at the actors:
– Paul Mescal ( Sir Paul McCartney)
The Co Kildare star, 29, who is the son of a member of the Irish police force and a teacher, played Irish football when he was young, before appearing on the stage.
He shot to stardom during the pandemic for his role in BBC miniseries Normal People, based on the novel of the same name by Irish author Sally Rooney, as love interest Connell Waldron in the BBC mini-series.
He has continued to mark out his place within the industry following his starring role in 2022 coming-of-age film Aftersun, which earned him Oscar and Bafta nominations for best actor as a father struggling with his mental health while on holiday with his daughter.
His appearance in romantic fantasy film, All of Us Strangers, alongside Irish actor Andrew Scott has garnered him further recognition and a British Independent Film Award for best supporting performance.
Mescal also won an Olivier Award for a stage adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, before going on to star in Gladiator II, directed by Sir Ridley Scott, as an arena fighter who tries to bring down two maniacal emperors.
He plays Lucilla's (Connie Nielsen) grown-up son from the first movie, which starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, who ends up in slavery after the murder of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
– Barry Keoghan (Sir Ringo Starr)
Keoghan has been outspoken about his difficult childhood in Dublin, which saw him grow up in foster care and his mother die after struggling with drug addiction.
The 32-year-old actor has received praise for his role in The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, and The Banshees Of Inisherin, both opposite Colin Farrell, and starred in blockbuster Marvel film Eternals with Angelina Jolie.
He was nominated for a Rising Star Award in 2019, before going on to receive two further Bafta nods for the Irish crime drama Calm With Horses, and black comedy Saltburn.
He picked up the best supporting actor prize for his role in Martin McDonagh-directed The Banshees Of Inisherin, a movie about two friends falling out, at the 2023 ceremony.
Keoghan also received nominations for the role from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
His scenes in Saltburn went viral when at the end of the film Keoghan is seen dancing naked around a luxury manor to Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder On The Dancefloor.
Keoghan also recently starred in drama Bird, and rural Irish thriller Bring Them Down, and will next appear in Netflix's film of hit series Peaky Blinders opposite Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.
– Harris Dickinson (John Lennon)
The 28-year-old Londoner's debut film role was in US-set 2017 movie Beach Rats as a young man struggling with his sexuality, earning him an Independent Spirit best actor award nod.
He soon picked up roles in Danny Boyle's series Trust, playing kidnapping victim John Paul Getty III in the drama opposite Hollywood heavyweights such as Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank, and earned a 2022 Rising Star Bafta nod.
Dickinson's next roles included in Disney fantasy movie Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil as a prince, and action movie The King's Man with Ralph Fiennes.
He has also opted for more absurd movies, including the Palme D'Or-winning Triangle Of Sadness, which saw him play a struggling model who ends up on a doomed luxury cruise, and he played a wrestler in The Iron Claw.
His other film credits include The Souvenir Part II, alongside Tilda Swinton and her daughter, Honor Swinton Byrne, thriller Where The Crawdads Sing, and comedy Scrapper.
For many recent filmgoers, he is also known for being in Babygirl, playing a young man who seduces a businesswoman, played by Nicole Kidman in the 2024 erotic thriller.
Dickinson was also recent Bafta nominated for the upcoming TV awards for FX mystery series A Murder At The End of the World for supporting actor.
– Joseph Quinn (George Harrison)
The Londoner, 31, joined Stranger Things for the fourth season as Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast Eddie Munson, after having appeared in an adaptation of E M Forster's Howards End, and Dickensian, about various Charles Dickens characters, on the BBC.
Quinn has also starred in alien invasion movie A Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel to the films A Quiet Place (2018) and A Quiet Place Part II (2020), and appeared in hit HBO series Game Of Thrones, along with historical Sky drama Catherine The Great with Dame Helen Mirren.
Quinn was also cast as one of the two feuding Roman emperors and brothers in Gladiator II, portraying the less mad Geta opposite Fred Hechinger as the unstable Emperor Caracalla.
Hechinger previously said they were inspired by comic characters Beavis and Butthead in their portrayals of the brothers.
Quinn will next be seen in Marvel movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps, opposite Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
He will portray the brother of Sue Storm (Kirby), otherwise known as the Invisible Woman, Johnny – The Human Torch – who can control flames.

SHAGGY: ‘Having a Guinness at the factory where it's brewed while overlooking the city was pretty dope'

My favourite drink as a child was Milo. It's chocolatey, kind of like a Jamaican version of Ovaltine, and my grandmother would give it to me at bedtime. She'd make it warm, with cow's milk, and sweeten it with condensed milk. Not the healthiest choice, but as a kid you get away with a lot more. When I was seven, my uncle Trevor gave me a sip of a Red Stripe beer. I thought it tasted nasty, but he was one of those guys I always wanted to be around because he was funny. And he had a motorcycle, so he would give me a ride around the block. It would make my day. I don't have a morning routine. There are days I get up and my first drink might be an espresso. I don't really like coffee – it's quite bitter – but it gets you going. Right now, I'm home in Miami, and my first drink every morning is fresh coconut water. I love a Moscow mule. I had a really good one this weekend at a seafood restaurant in Miami called Estiatorio Milos. I arrived a little early and my table wasn't ready, so I ordered one by the bar while I was waiting for the rest of my party. I remember thinking, 'Wow, that's pretty good,' because they're easy to mess up. There are always big blue bottles of Saratoga water in my fridge. I have a thing against drinking out of plastic bottles, and these are glass. It's kind of a pain in the ass for my staff because they have to go somewhere special and buy it in bulk. I'm not a wine connoisseur but I have friends, like Sting, who are specialists, so if I'm with him, I'm drinking nice wine. Each Christmas, he and his wife Trudie send me a beautiful basket of their wines, cheeses, olive oils and stuff from their farm, Il Palagio, in Tuscany. It's one of those gifts that I really look forward to. The rooftop Gravity Bar on the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin is probably the most memorable place I've ever gone for a drink. My wife [Rebecca] is Irish, so drinking is a big part of her culture, and having a Guinness at the factory where it's brewed while overlooking the city was pretty dope. I put a lot of love into my Irish coffee recipe. My friends will come in and say, 'Make me one of those.' And it takes a minute because I have a Breville coffee maker, so I need to grind the coffee like a barista. I then add Bailey's, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract and my milk of choice, semi-skimmed. I normally don't tell anyone what's in it. I should have left out an ingredient. If I could share a drink with anyone, I'd pick Bill Withers. We'd have a glass of Wray & Nephew white rum, on the rocks, with big ice. He's one of my favourite artists ever. He left us gems like Ain't No Sunshine and Just The Two Of Us that went on to be remembered for decades and decades. Everyone will be drinking Monkey 47 at my funeral. It's my favourite gin – and one of the more expensive brands. It's won a ton of awards. I'd like it to be served with big ice and either tonic water, so it's a gin and tonic, or with Ting, the Jamaican grapefruit soda, so it's a gin and Ting.

Couple's last day of holiday ruined by cruel 'Scouse stereotype' insults

Catherine Kemp, 57, and her partner Stephen Rice, 56, were enjoying a weekend away in the Lake District when they popped into a pub called the Crafty Baa in Windermere for a drink A Brit couple were left appalled when their tranquil Lake District getaway was marred by a man allegedly hurling abuse and tired stereotypes at them during a pub visit. Catherine Kemp, 57, and her partner Stephen Rice, 56, from West Derby, had been soaking up the atmosphere in the Crafty Baa in Windermere, enjoying the final evening of their holiday, when Stephen, a former singer, decided to join in on an open mic night. ‌ However, their enjoyment was cut short as a Manchester United supporter allegedly began loudly berating Stephen with derogatory comments about Scousers, interrupting his performance. ‌ Catherine managed to capture the unpleasant incident on her phone while recording Stephen's song. She told the Liverpool Echo: "I didn't even know he was getting up and all of a sudden he was singing and then I heard this man shouting. "I was videoing Stephen but then I heard [the man] say 'I hate Scousers.' "He talked about Scousers robbing purses - just the stereotypes of what gives us all a bad name." Catherine expressed her dismay, saying, "It was just not nice when you're enjoying yourself and you're having that in the background. "When I confronted him he said it's not about Liverpool, it's about football - so he changed it from us being robbers to it was about the football." Despite attempting to perform another song after the confrontation, Stephen was too disheartened by the heckling and stopped midway through. ‌ The incident put a damper on the couple's holiday, and they revealed it "took the shine off" their final night in the lakes, leaving soon after. It comes after another British holidaymaker has told how she became "sick to death of looking at rice" after the hotel she stayed at during her picturesque island getaway came with "no English food". Susan Edwards, from Westerhope, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has refused to book with TUI again after paying for an all-inclusive trip to Corfu where she wasn't offered English food. The mum, 69, had jetted off to the Greek island paradise with her two cousins, aged 77 and 78, 50-year-old second cousin and daughter, 30, on a TUI package holiday. But she said the vacation was "horrendous" from the minute they arrived, and that the Brits were left with "no food" they could eat. ‌ Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Susan said the group discovered on the first morning of their stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel that there was "no English food" available. The mum, who suffers from ulcerative colitis, lamented the lack of bacon and sausage, saying she and the group were unhappy when they were presented with traditional Greek fare. She said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce. "There was no bacon. For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. We got chips one day. One day out of the whole lot. "There was fish, sardines and rice - I was sick to death of looking at rice. There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked (labelled). One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. It's the worst holiday I've ever been on."

It comes as Blind Date is set to make a sensational return to TV after 22 years away from screens. The legendary dating show - famously hosted by the late Cilla Black from 1985 to 2003 - is eyeing up Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall to host the revival. Originally, rumours suggested the ITV hit would make a comeback on BBC but now sources claim the love-match show will reboot on Disney+. MailOnline has contacted Disney+ for comment. In March, former This Morning host Holly was tipped to become the next Cilla, with the presenter lining up a string of big-money deals worth up to £10million. The revival was previously being considered by Holly's husband Dan Baldwin, and the star had previously stepped into Cilla's shoes when she hosted a reboot of Surprise Surprise. Cilla is available to stream on Netflix.
