Wildfire near Madrid kills one as fires burn across Spain

Euronews2 days ago
Firefighting teams in Spain have contained a wildfire near Madrid that killed one person and led to dozens of residents being evacuated, local authorities said on Tuesday.
About 180 people were evacuated from residential areas including Soto de Viñuelas and Fuente El Fresno in the Tres Cantos region, according to officials.
The blaze engulfed a housing complex in Soto de Viñuelas, with an as-of-yet unconfirmed number of homes destroyed.
One man in the housing estate died from his injuries after suffering burns on 98% of his body. He had been flowy by helicopter from the Tres Cantos region to a hospital in the capital, where he passed away, according to a statement by the Community of Madrid.
The Regional Minister for the Environment, Agriculture and the Interior of the Community of Madrid, Carlos Novillo Piris, said the fire advanced six kilometres in "just 40 minutes".
Local media reported that the fire also halted the flow of traffic on the M-607 between Madrid and the municipality of Colmenar Viejo, located to the north of the capital.
On Monday, authorities in the southern town of Tarifa, in Cádiz, ordered the preventive evacuation of some 2,000 people as forest fires advanced towards the region.
Wildfires have also brought havoc in northern Spain, where blazes threatened to destroy residential buildings in the towns of Molezuelas de Carballeda and Carucedo.
Spain is facing one of its worst summers for wildfires in recent history.
Massive blazes have engulfed tens of thousands of hectares and threatened UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Around 39,155 hectares have been burned between 1 January and 3 August this year in Spain — an area 9% larger than for the same period in 2024 — the government has said.

Tropical Storm Erin tracker: Forecast to strengthen into 1st Atlantic hurricane of 2025 on Friday, as latest projected path is updated

There is still uncertainty about what impact Erin may have on states like Florida on the U.S. East Coast, NHC forecasters say. Tropical Storm Erin is expected to become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season by Friday, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center. Erin formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Monday and is strengthening as it moves westward. The NHC said there is still uncertainty about what impact it could have on states like Florida on the U.S. East Coast, as well as the Bahamas and Bermuda. But forecasters remain confident that Erin "will be a large and powerful hurricane over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean this weekend." Where is Tropical Storm Erin, and what is its path? As of 11 a.m. ET Thursday: Erin was located 890 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. It is moving west at 17 mph. "A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight, with this motion expected to continue into the weekend," the NHC said. "On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend." What are the chances it will intensify? Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to strengthen in the next day or so and "is expected to become a hurricane on Friday," forecasters said. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when maximum sustained winds reach at least 74 mph. Hurricanes are rated on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, ranging from Category 1 to Category 5, with 5 being the most severe. A storm is considered a major hurricane when it reaches Category 3 strength, with sustained winds of at least 111 mph, according to the NHC. Watches and warnings in place As of 11 a.m. ET Thursday, there were no coastal watches or warnings in effect. However, swells from Erin will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend. "These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the hurricane center warned. How is hurricane season shaping up? The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and runs through the end of November, has a 50% chance of being above normal. Last week, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration slightly updated the number of expected storms to 13-18 (estimated at 13-19 in May), five of which could become major hurricanes (with winds of more than 111 mph). A typical hurricane season averages 14 named storms. We're currently about halfway through this year's hurricane season, and there have been five so far: tropical storms Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter and Erin.

Lilly raises UK obesity shot price as Trump pressures pharma

(Bloomberg) — Eli Lilly & Co. is raising the list price for its obesity shot in the UK by as much as 170%, as the pharma industry comes under pressure from US President Donald Trump to increase medicine prices in Europe and lower them for Americans. The current list price in the UK for Lilly's Mounjaro ranges from £92 ($124.89) to £122 a month, depending on the dose. This will increase to between £133 and £330 from Sept. 1, with the US drugmaker saying it aims to bring rates in line with other countries. Trump sent letters to 17 of the world's largest drugmakers earlier this month, including Lilly and Novo Nordisk A/S, which makes the competing shot Wegovy, insisting they lower what they charge Medicaid in the US for existing drugs. He gave the companies 60 days to comply, saying he wants companies to negotiate harder with 'foreign freeloading nations' who pay less for their medicines. Lilly said the increase follows a review that looked to address pricing inconsistencies. The UK was one of the first countries where Mounjaro was introduced, with rates 'significantly below the European average to prevent delays' in availability via the National Health Service, the company added. 'With changes in the environment and new clinical evidence supporting the value of Mounjaro, Lilly are now aligning the list price more consistently to ensure fair global contributions to the cost of innovation,' it said. Affordability Concerns The new list price is still well below the level in the US, where it costs over $1,000 a month. Still, the higher prices raised concerns in online forums from patients who say the drug will be unaffordable for them. Patients in the UK usually get most medicines on the National Health Service for a set prescription price of £9.90. However, obesity drugs have only just started to be rolled out on the NHS and the criteria for access are stringent. So far, the majority of patients who access the weight-loss shots have been doing so privately. The actual price that these patients pay is likely to be well below the list price, because Lilly negotiated commercial agreements with private providers. Still, those providers are likely to face difficult decisions on how much to pass on any price increase to patients. Pharmacies like Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.'s Boots and Superdrug, as well as online providers like Juniper and Voy that have focused on weight-loss drugs, have benefited from the rush for obesity shots. If patients are unable to afford more expensive Mounjaro, they may also switch to Novo's Wegovy. Novo has not yet announced a similar increase in price for its obesity drug. While the list price has increased, Lilly said it is working with private providers to maintain access for patients. Separately, the company reached an agreement with the NHS to ensure continued supply and patient access. —With assistance from Madison Muller. Phillips 66's Bayway refinery's gasoline unit at reduced rates after fire

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Phillips 66 has reduced gasoline output at its 258,000 barrel-per-day Bayway refinery in Linden, New Jersey after a fire near the plant's gasoline producing unit, two people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. An ancillary piece of equipment of the refinery's Fluid Catalytic Cracking unit caught fire and led to the production outage, the sources said. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. The refinery is expected to resolve the issue over the coming days and return to full production, one of the sources said. Phillips 66 did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Bayway produces around 155,000 barrels per day of gasoline and is one of the largest suppliers of fuel on the U.S. East Coast. The refinery was partially shut last month after rainstorms caused a power outage at the plant, resulting in a brief spike in prices for refined products at the New York Harbor as Phillips 66 made up for the outages by buying fuel on the open market.
