Who should you bet on in the 2025 Kentucky Derby? Here's what the experts say

Miami Herald30-04-2025

The 2025 Kentucky Derby is Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and the Herald-Leader has asked horse racing experts around the country for their top handicapping picks going into the big race.
Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism is the favorite, with Florida Derby runner-up Sovereignty and Arkansas Derby winner Sandman next on the morning line, and Blue Grass Stakes winner Burnham Square, Wood Memorial winner Rodriguez and Japanese star Luxor Cafe among the other top contenders.
Here's a look at the predictions from our panel, which included some long-shot bets.
John Clay
Herald-Leader
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Sandman
Comment: We need outstanding Journalism now more than ever.
Ben Roberts
Herald-Leader
Win: Sovereignty
Place: Journalism
Show: Publisher
Comment: Like the running style, like the progression, like the connections and think Sovereignty is sitting on the biggest race of his career this weekend.
Cameron Drummond
Herald-Leader
Win: East Avenue
Place: Sandman
Show: Tiztastic
Comment: East Avenue is part of a hot early pace, and the longshot bet finally shows some consistency with a big effort to hold off late-running Sandman and Tiztastic, with the top-three finishers all coming from the outside of the 20-horse field.
Caroline Makauskas
Herald-Leader
Win: Sandman
Place: Journalism
Show: Luxor Cafe
Comment: No stranger to Churchill Downs, Sandman raced three times at the track as a 2-year-old and finished third in the Grade 3 Street Sense back in October. The closer is hitting his stride, most recently winning the Arkansas Derby by 2 1⁄2 lengths over fellow Run for the Roses horse Publisher on March 29.
Frank Angst
BloodHorse
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Grande
Comment: Journalism is undefeated in two-turn races and has improved in each of his career efforts. In winning the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby last out, he overcame some trouble in the backstretch. That toughness should come in handy in the Kentucky Derby. His breeding, Curlin—Mopotism, by Uncle Mo, suggests 1 ¼ miles will be in his wheelhouse, and I look for him to take another step forward Saturday.
Rick Bozich
WDRB
Win: Sovereignty
Place: Burnham Square
Show: Sandman
Comment: There is a reason Bill Mott has been in a fantastic mood. He's got a thunderous colt.
Steve Byk
At the Races
Win: Journalism
Place: Burnham Square
Show: Baeza
Comment: Journalism arrives for Derby as the most imposing favorite in several years, possessing a heady combination of speed and power with a style that fits the anticipated race flow. Barring unforeseen trouble, he'll win handily.
John Cherwa
Los Angeles Times
Win: Journalism
Place: Rodriguez
Show: Sandman
Comment: Journalism proves he's the real deal by biding his time to the quarter pole, where Umberto Rispoli starts to take aim at the front-running Rodriguez. He gets him a few strides from the wire to win and start the Triple Crown talk.
Ed DeRosa
Horse Racing Nation
Win: Journalism
Place: Chunk of Gold
Show: Baeza
Comment: There are two kinds of favorites in the Kentucky Derby: Default favorites in that someone has to be favored and deserving favorites in that this horse has demonstrated a legit claim to the best of his generation. Journalism is in the latter camp, which is why I'm so bullish on his chances on Saturday at Churchill Downs. His San Felipe Stakes victory was the best prep performance of the year, and he overcame trouble to win the Santa Anita Derby. Because I'm so heavy on the favorite here, I'm using long shot Chunk of Gold liberally in my trifecta wagers.
Joe Drape
New York Times
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Luxor Cafe
Comment: What a great name?
Bill Finley
National turf writer
Win: Sandman
Place: Burnham Square
Show: Journalism
Comment: He took a step backward in the Rebel but rebounded with an impressive score in the Arkansas Derby. Has the right running style to win.
Jason Frakes
Courier Journal
Win: Journalism
Place: Rodriguez
Show: Baeza
Comment: I hate picking the favorite, but it's hard to go against Journalism when you've worked in the newspaper business for 30 years.
Kaitlin Free
Churchill Downs
Win: Journalism
Place: Luxor Cafe
Show: Sovereignty
Comment: Seems peerless in this race, standing alone numbers and figures wise. Ability to stop and start will be key.
Neil Greenberg
Washington Post
Win: Rodriguez
Place: Luxor Cafe
Show: Tiztastic
Comment: Rodriguez's early speed and pedigree, which includes Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and versatile sire Into Mischief, gives him the rare blend of speed, stamina and toughness needed to prevail in the Run for the Roses.
David Grening
Daily Racing Form
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Burnham Square
Comment: Despite racing in short fields, Journalism can be placed where he needs to be and showed in the Santa Anita Derby he is athletic enough to get out of trouble. Has looked sensational in the mornings at Churchill.
Steve Haskin
National turf writer
Win: Sovereignty
Place: Journalism
Show: Grande
Comment: I can't separate the top two so going for the bigger price, but watch out for Grande — my price horse. Luxor Cafe, Chunk of Gold, Final Gambit, and American Promise the bombs.
Brooks Holton
Courier Journal
Win: Journalism
Place: Sandman
Show: Rodriguez
Comment: Bob Baffert is back, and my gut tells me he'll at least get on the board. Rodriguez sets the pace, then Journalism and Sandman duel down the stretch.
Byron King
BloodHorse
Win: Sovereignty
Place: Journalism
Show: Luxor Cafe
Comment: Sovereignty is a powerful late finisher who should relish the mile and a quarter distance of the Kentucky Derby.
Tim Layden
NBC Sports
Win: Journalism
Place: Sandman
Show: Sovereignty
Comment: Journalism is proven and professional, and should like both his post position and the pace up front. Also: You gotta love the name.
Tom Leach
Keeneland
Win: Journalism
Place: Citizen Bull
Show: Burnham Square
Comment: I was all set to pick against Journalism until he worked his way out of a traffic jam on the final turn of the Santa Anita Derby and ran down a very good horse who was loose on an easy lead. I love horses who have Derby winner-caliber talent but also show the ability to handle adversity.
Ray Paulick
The Paulick Report
Win: Publisher
Place: Journalism
Show: Sovereignty
Comment: The last time a maiden (a horse that has never won a race) won the Kentucky Derby was Brokers Tip in 1933, but Arkansas Derby runner-up Publisher has improved with every start and is sitting on a big effort to give Steve Asmussen his first victory in the Run for the Roses.
Mike Penna
Horse Racing Radio Network
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Burnham Square
Comment: Journalism has proven himself to be the best of his crop. A clean trip and he is probably the winner, but late-running Sovereignty and Burnham Square could make things interesting in the late stages.
Jennie Rees
Kentucky HBPA
Win: Journalism
Place: Sovereignty
Show: Tiztastic
Comment: This is not a hunch bet; I'm just tired of unsuccessfully trying to beat California horses that are favored. Journalism is the fastest horse, has a good post and running style to stay out of trouble and is bred to go long. Comparative long shot (besides Tiztastic at 20-1) would be Burnham Square (12-1) getting another rail-skimming ride from Brian Hernandez Jr.
Kenny Rice
NBC Sports
Win: Journalism
Place: Sandman
Show: Tiztastic
Comment: Trainer Michael McCarthy shines in his biggest moment.
Nicole Russo
Daily Racing Form
Win: Burnham Square
Place: Journalism
Show: Sandman
Comment: Blue Grass winner Burnham Square appears to be absolutely thriving in his training and peaking at the right time, a key part of the Kentucky Derby alchemy.
Tim Wilkin
National turf writer
Win: Sovereignty
Place: Journalism
Show: Rodriguez
Comment: Expect to see Sovereignty's long stride to eat up ground quickly in the Churchill Downs stretch and overtake Journalism, who had taken the lead after disposing of pace survivor Rodriguez. Should be another nail biter in America's most famous horse race.

Who did Aaron Rodgers marry? What we know about Steelers quarterback's wife, wedding ring, Brittani

Aaron Rodgers is officially off the market — professionally and personally. That's right, the four-time MVP quarterback not only found a new team this offseason but he found a new life partner. Aaron Rodgers has confirmed that he's married. Advertisement Rodgers signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers wasn't much of a secret, as it had been widely speculated that the team would be his landing spot. Rodgers tying the knot, on the other hand, was done much more privately. Even his friends apparently didn't know the former Green Bay Packers quarterback was married. After previously being in many relationships with women who are in the spotlight just as much as Rodgers, this one is more in the dark. Here's what we know about Rodgers' wife, the woman he last discussed being in a relationship with him, that wedding ring that sparked the speculation and his high-profile dating history. Is Aaron Rodgers married now? Aaron Rodgers is married. Advertisement He told Pittsburgh reporters at Steelers mandatory minicamp on June 10 that the ring on his finger, which had been highly discussed since he debuted it at the Kentucky Derby in early May, is in fact a wedding ring. Who did Aaron Rodgers marry? Rodgers often used the phrase "beautiful mystery" to describe his football future when he was pondering retirement in recent years. The same can be said about who he married. His marriage is likely to a woman named Brittani, though he didn't name her or wasn't asked about her during the interview with Steelers reporters on June 10. He only has mentioned his relationship a couple times. Both came on "The Pat McAfee Show." The first was when Rodgers revealed that he had a girlfriend in December and the second was when he discussed why he hadn't signed with a team in April. Advertisement "I'm in a different phase of my life, I'm 41 years old, I'm in a serious relationship," Rodgers said. "People in my inner circle battling difficult stuff. To make a commitment to a team is a big thing." Who is Aaron Rodgers' wife? Rodgers didn't provide details about his wife during his first public comments at Steelers minicamp since going on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April. He only answered two questions: about the ring on his finger and that he got married a couple months ago. Social media: Reaction to Aaron Rodgers getting married Aaron Rodgers' wedding ring Rodgers apparently didn't have any public wedding with his friends. After all, best buddy AJ Hawk didn't even know Rodgers was married. Advertisement But Rodgers certainly wasn't hiding it. His ring on his finger certainly said so, though it was still a mystery to many. Rodgers was wearing a wedding band on his left ring finger when he walked the red carpets at Kentucky Derby parties May 2. "All of us were a bit surprised," Hawk said on "The Pat McAfee Show" when asked about seeing the ring at the Derby. Even so, Hawk, a former teammate of Rodgers and co-host on McAfee's show, wasn't sure if that meant Rodgers was married. "To tell you the truth, I don't know. I don't know if I have any answers for you when it comes to that situation. He's very private and mysterious when it comes to things like that and this is definitely one of those, for sure." The ring was then prominently displayed when he signed his contract with the Steelers on June 7. But since Rodgers hadn't publicly announced he was married, much less engaged, it was unclear if that ring was a wedding ring. Advertisement He was even asked on June 10 by a Pittsburgh reporter if it was an Oura Ring. In the same line of questioning, when the reporter asked if it's a wedding ring, Rodgers seemed somewhat surprised and confused by the question and replied: "Yeah, it's a wedding ring." Aaron Rodgers' new wife Rodgers doesn't keep much of his life — or at least his views on the world — private. But he is keeping his wife private. That much is clear based on how little he's said about her. Maybe that's because of how public his last relationships were and the breakups came to be. He talked about having a private life at a taping of the "Ya Neva Know" podcast with rapper Mike Stud, in Austin, Texas, in May. Advertisement "It's important to have your private life private when you're a public person," Rodgers said. Rodgers said that, when there are problems in his personal life, they can lead to problems in his professional life. "Our job is 24/7 during the season," Rodgers said. "I like to always be thinking about ball. You can't let personal problems into the professional and professional issues into the personal because, once they do, both suffer. There's been a lot of times in my life, personal's been (expletive) and the professional been a refuge. Hard for that to last long because it always leaks in." Is there a photo of Aaron Rodgers and Brittani? There is not a wedding photo of Rodgers and his wife. Advertisement In fact, there aren't any public photos of Rodgers with the woman whom he previously said he was in a serious relationship. That's a stark contrast to his past relationships when they were all thoroughly documented by every entertainment website. Who is Aaron Rodgers dating? Rodgers was last to be known dating a woman named Brittani. That's what he told his buddies on "The Pat McAfee Show" in December 2024. He didn't provide many details about her. Just that she didn't have social media and that she was a fan of McAfee's show. Oh, and also her name was spelled with an "i." Advertisement Rodgers has been a regular on "The Pat McAfee Show" for the last six years, dating to his time with the Packers. While he discusses everything from politics to UFOs, COVID to his favorite books, plus football and his future, he rarely opens up about his personal life. But it was news to McAfee and everyone else when Rodgers revealed he had a girlfriend when he was talking about waiting for a Christmas present to arrive to his door. "I was a little worried 'cause there was one package left for my girlfriend, Brittani, that hadn't showed up yet," Rodgers said. "I was waiting on it to show up. And it showed up today. We're all set. All my stuff for the (offensive) line is done, all my stuff for the QB room is done." Rodgers told McAfee that he loved being in a relationship. Advertisement "It's a good feeling, boys," Rodgers said. Aaron Rodgers' girlfriend history It appears Rodgers' wife isn't in the public eye like his other past high-profile girlfriends. And he has kept this relationship much more private. Rodgers began dating actress Olivia Munn in 2014 and they often walked the red carpets together. Their relationship ended in 2017. It wasn't long before Rodgers was off the market, starting a relationship with Danica Patrick, the famous IndyCar driver. That was very public, too, but it ended abruptly in 2020. Rodgers then had a whirlwind relationship with actress Shailene Woodley. The two connected during the COVID-19 pandemic and were photographed at Disney together, traveling and even went live on Instagram together for their followers. Rodgers announced during the virtual ceremony of the NFL Honors in February 2021, when he was awarded his third MVP, that he was engaged. Rodgers and Woodley were broken up by February 2022. Advertisement Woodley said in a magazine interview last year that the relationship was "toxic" and that "it was not right." At the same time, Woodley said her time with Rodgers "was beautiful.' Aaron Rodgers sits next to Mallory Edens, the daughter of Milwaukee Bucks owner Wes Edens during a Bucks playoff game on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Rodgers was also joined by former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb. Were Aaron Rodgers and the Bucks owner's daughter, Mallory Edens, in a relationship? Rodgers and Mallory Edens, the daughter of Milwaukee Bucks owner, Wes Edens, were linked together in 2023 but they never commented on a relationship. The two often sat courtside together at Bucks home games, alongside Wes. At the time, Rodgers and Edens were "more than friends" but just keeping it casual, according to People. Advertisement Rodgers has an ownership stake in the Bucks. Danica Patrick on Aaron Rodgers Before Rodgers' marriage was confirmed by the quarterback this week, one of his former flames torched the future Hall of Famer on their breakup. In an interview on the "Sage Steele Podcast," Patrick called the end of her relationship with Rodgers the 'the most amount of pain" she's ever experienced. Patrick and Rodgers dated from 2018 to 2020. The two traveled together, made high-profile appearances together, including courtside at Bucks games, and even lived together. Rodgers also attended Patrick's final race of her career at the Indy 500 in 2018. Advertisement But beyond what the public saw, Patrick said the relationship was "emotionally abusive" and that it wore her "down to nothing." "He leaves a trail of blood," Patrick said about Rodgers. "I don't think I'm saying too much, you know, earth-shattering stuff. There's been enough out there." Rodgers hasn't responded to Patrick's accusations. How old is Aaron Rodgers? Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old. His birthday is Dec. 2. Like in 2024, Rodgers will be the oldest active player in the NFL during the 2025 season. Rodgers is beginning his 21st season in the NFL and is on his third team of his career. He played 18 years in Green Bay, where he was a Super Bowl champion and became one of the game's all-time greats, winning four MVPs. Rodgers spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets. All About Aaron Rodgers' Wife Brittani (Whom He Secretly Wed a Few Months Ago!)

On June 10, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed that he's married He first shared that he was dating a woman named Brittani in December 2024 Rodgers and Brittani keep their relationship privateAaron Rodgers' wife Brittani is keeping her identity a secret. On June 10, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback revealed that he gotten secretly married, telling press that the ceremony was "a couple months" ago. The confirmation came a month after Rodgers was spotted wearing what appeared to be a wedding band at a Kentucky Derby event in May. Rodgers first revealed he had a girlfriend during a December 2024 episode of The Pat McAfee Show. He gave few details about his new partner, Brittani, but shared that she tends to stay out of the spotlight — a stark contrast from many of his past romances. The football player has had several high-profile relationships, including with actresses Shailene Woodley and Olivia Munn, as well as retired NASCAR star Danica Patrick. In his 2024 Netflix docuseries, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, the football player opened up about how dating celebrities made it "a little bit more difficult" to keep his romantic life private. 'I didn't do myself any favors with some of the girls I dated after that that were in the public eye," he said. "I definitely hated it at first — like, really despised it. I enjoyed my private life." So, who is Aaron Rodgers' wife, Brittani? Here's everything the quarterback has said about their relationship. The NFL player first went public with a new relationship during a December 2024 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, when he casually mentioned his "girlfriend Brittani." Rodgers had been discussing his Christmas shopping habits, explaining that he now orders gifts online rather than going to a mall — which also made for some holiday stress. 'There was one package left for my girlfriend Brittani that hadn't showed up yet,' he said. 'I was waiting on this to show up, it showed up today.' On April 17, a few months after Rodgers revealed his new relationship status, he returned to The Pat McAfee Show and gave a rare update about how his romance with Brittani was going. While discussing being a free agent quarterback at the moment, Rodgers explained that he has other priorities at the forefront. "I'm in a different phase of my life," he said. "I'm 41 years old, I'm in a serious relationship. I have off the field stuff going on that requires my attention." During his December 2024 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers revealed few details about his new girlfriend, but mentioned that Brittani is private. After he first mentioned her name, one of the co-hosts, who appeared caught off guard by Rodger's revelation, jokingly asked, 'Spears?' "Not Britney Spears, no, this is Brittani with an 'i,' " Rodgers clarified, adding that his new girlfriend doesn't watch The Pat McAfee Show and doesn't have social media, but he "thinks" she is a fan of host Pat McAfee. Although Rodgers has been private about his new romance, he has shared some insight into how it's made him feel. After McAfee suggested that Rodgers was "in love" during his December episode, the NFL MVP smiled and replied, "It's a good feeling boys. It is." Rodgers has been open about experiencing mental health struggles over the years, including how he's used psychedelic drugs to help him on his journey to find love. During an August 2022 appearance on the Aubrey Marcus Podcast, Rodgers shared that ayahuasca, a plant-based psychedelic, helped him love himself "unconditionally," which also impacted his relationship with others. "To me, one of the core tenets of your mental health is that self-love," he said. "It's only in that unconditional self-love, that then I'm able to truly be able to unconditionally love others." The NFL player continued, "And what better way to work on my mental health than to have an experience like that?" During a press conference on June 10, Rodgers revealed that he was married after confirming he was wearing "a wedding ring." While he remained tight-lipped on the details of the secret wedding, he said it took place "a couple months" ago. The announcement came nearly one month after Rodgers sparked marriage rumors while wearing a dark-colored band on his ring finger at a Kentucky Derby event. After the outing, fans began speculating online that he had possibly gotten secretly married. "Looks like AR is officially a married man??? Peep the ring on his left ring finger." one user wrote on X. Read the original article on People
