MUSCAT: The Oman Aquatics Association (OAA) hosted a special ceremony to honour the national open water swimming team for their exceptional performance at the 3rd GCC Beach Games "Muscat 2025", which took place in Muscat from April 5–11. The team earned top spots in the competition, securing a remarkable achievement for the Sultanate of Oman.
The event, held under the auspices of Qais bin Saud al Zakwani, CEO of Nama Water Services and Treasurer of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), recognised key partners and supporters who played a vital role in the team's success. The ceremony was attended by board members of the OAA and representatives of other national sports federations.
Dr Awadh bin Salim al Ojaili, Chairman of Oman Aquatics Association, delivered the opening remarks, emphasising the importance of celebrating such milestones to motivate young athletes and align with the federation's strategy launched in March. 'This recognition reflects our commitment to developing swimming in the Sultanate of Oman and inspiring future generations. We are particularly focused on increasing female participation through the dedicated efforts of the Women's Sports Committee,' he said.

The event served as a vibrant platform to foster digital skills, inspire innovation and fuel the aspirations of a new generation of tech-savvy Omanis. The championship underscored Oman's growing commitment to creating a knowledge-based economy by nurturing digital competencies and fostering high-potential sectors such as esports and gaming. 'Public-private partnerships are vital to nurturing young talent and developing their skills across diverse sectors,' said Saba al Busaidy, Head of the Omani Gaming & Esports Committee. 'This collaboration stands as a model for empowering Omani youth. Through the Oman REFCO Esports Championship, we are creating meaningful opportunities for young individuals to sharpen their competitive edge while contributing to the larger vision of building a resilient, digitally empowered society.' The championship featured competitions in FIFA 25, Tekken and Assetto Corsa, with each category drawing large crowds, fierce competition and enthusiastic support. Beyond the games, the participants engaged in motivational workshops designed to deepen their understanding of the global esports industry, potential career paths and digital entrepreneurship. Suleiman bin Abdullah al Salmi, Head of Human Resources and Corporate Services at Oman REFCO, commented: 'At Oman REFCO, we see youth as the cornerstone of Oman's future. Supporting this championship is part of our broader mission to elevate the gaming sector from a recreational pastime into a viable professional and economic contributor. Through sustained collaboration with the Omani Gaming & Esports Committee, we're building momentum towards a dynamic digital ecosystem where youth can thrive and lead.' The event was sponsored by Brig Jamal bin Said al Tai, Chairman, OAA and Active Oman. A long-time advocate for youth engagement, Brig Al Tai praised the initiative for channelling youthful energy into positive, forward-looking pursuits. 'The OAA and Active Oman are proud to back an event that promotes digital readiness among our youth. As esports continues to grow globally, it is vital that Omani youth are equipped to participate, compete and represent our country on international platforms,' he said. In addition to sponsoring the event, the OAA and Active Oman played a key role in ensuring seamless event execution by supporting logistics, promotions and technical infrastructure. The Oman REFCO Esports Championship was a launchpad for emerging local talent, many of whom are now being considered for inclusion in Oman's national esports team. These meetings will continue for three consecutive days at OOC headquarters. The aim of the meetings is to discuss the technical and administrative aspects of Oman's participation in the Games, which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 7 to 21, 2025. The event will feature athletes from 57 member states of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation. These meetings reflect OOC commitment to strengthening coordination with sports federations and committees to ensure effective participation in the Games—one of the most prominent multi-sport events in the Islamic world. The Games provide an ideal platform for fair competition and for showcasing national talents across various sports. The discussions will cover aspects related to selecting the sports in which Oman will participate, based on established technical criteria. They will also review timelines, logistical requirements, and the technical preparation needs of national teams in alignment with this important regional sporting event. The Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation recently announced that the sixth edition of the Games will be hosted in Riyadh, featuring 24 sports. This will be organized in coordination with the host committee and the national Olympic committees, with an emphasis on selecting appropriate dates to avoid conflicts with major championships and Islamic events. This scheduling aims to enhance athletes' opportunities to perform at their best as they prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028.

Porsche Centre Oman signs a two-year partnership with OAA

MUSCAT: Porsche Centre Oman is investing in the future of motorsport in the Sultanate of Oman by entering into a multi-year partnership with the country's governing body of motorsport, the Oman Automobile Association (OAA), to help grow motorsports at the grass roots level. To be run under the banner of the 'Porsche Centre Oman Karting Championships Series', the commitment will cover the next two seasons of the championship. It will support motorsport in Oman and actively contribute to the development of future motor racing talent and karting in the Sultanate of Oman. 'We are proud to sponsor a project that aligns with our legacy of motorsport excellence,' said Mohamed A R Qassim, Director of Porsche Centre Oman. The championship series is distinct in that it will consist of classes to cater for both race license holders and leisure karting participants. Porsche Centre Oman will provide full branding, racing suits and financial support for licensed drivers and cash prizes to the podium winners. 'Supporting the next generation of drivers is key to Porsche Centre Oman's vision in the region and this partnership reflects our commitment to youth development and motorsport innovation in the Sultanate of Oman,' said Mohamed. The calendar season will also include a 24-hour endurance race along with other races scheduled to be taking place at the Muscat Speedway, starting with the first round of races in September. 'This new championship series for both licensed racers in Rotax Max and leisure karts marks a new era for karting in Oman,' said Sulaiman al Rawahi, Managing Director of the Oman Automobile Association (OAA). 'Partnering with Porsche Centre Oman allows us to elevate the level of competition and offer new opportunities for aspiring drivers across the country.' With the partnership running through until the third quarter of 2027, Porsche Centre Oman will provide financial prizes, and equipment such as branded race suits, while a new Instagram channel will also be launched to promote the upcoming series. Supporting youth sports and building engagement within the community has long been a cornerstone of Porsche Centre Oman's philosophy. The opportunity to support the burgeoning motorsport industry and empower future generations of Omani race drivers starting at grassroots levels made an alignment with the Oman Automobile Association a natural alliance. Porsche has a long history of supporting motor racing in the Middle East with the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East being the pinnacle, showcasing 15 seasons of competition across the Gulf.
