Calcutta HC orders Shami monthly payment of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to estranged wife, daughter
Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court's order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023.
"In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application," the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on Tuesday stated.
"However as regards petitioner's child the husband /opposite party No 2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount," the order added.
Jahan had lodged an FIR at the Jadavpur police station against Shami and his family in March 2018, four years after their marriage in April 2014, alleging "enormous physical and mental torture" under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violation (PWDV) Act, 2005 and "sustained indifference and neglect" of her minor daughter.
Besides domestic violence, she also accused Shami of dowry harassment and match-fixing while alleging that Shami had stopped shouldering financial responsibility for running her family expenses.

Gibbons smuggled from Bangkok seized
Chennai: Gibbons seem to be wildlife traffickers' latest favourite as customs sleuths thwarted their second bid in two weeks to smuggle them via Chennai airport from Thailand. On Tuesday, customs officers intercepted an Indian flyer and found the animals inside two pet bags concealed in checked-in luggage beneath chocolates and other food items. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau officers, who identified the monkeys as an agile gibbon (hylobates agilis) and an eastern grey gibbon (hylobates funereus), provided suitable care. The monkeys were deported on the same flight back to Thailand, and the flyer was remanded in judicial custody. Customs sources said that the flyer was a carrier engaged by a smuggler, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the latter's identity. Both gibbon varieties, in high demand in the international pet trade, are endangered. The agile gibbon is on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mumbai police raid paan shops and crack down on drug trade near schools and colleges
Mumbai: Over 2,000 paan shops close to schools and colleges suspected of selling drugs were raided in the city and their encroachments removed, said CM Devendra Fadnavis in the legislative council on Thursday. 8 trees on vacant Port Trust land cut down, KMC files FIR
1 2 3 Kolkata: The Chetla police registered a case under section 11 (1) of the West Bengal Trees (Protection and Conservation in Non-Forest Areas) Act, 2006, after at least eight fully grown trees—two of which were allegedly mahogany trees—inside a vacant plot of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port Trust (located opposite premises no. 100/18/1) on Alipore Road were cut down without prior approval from the KMC. The trees were reportedly cut by "contractors" on June 30 and Aug 1. The complaint was lodged by the executive engineer (civil) of the Parks & Square Department of KMC. When contacted by TOI through a phone call and message, SMPK authorities said they would get back after collecting all relevant information. The reply was awaited at the time this report went to press. At least two locals, on condition of anonymity, claimed that the first attempt to cut down the trees was made on June 28. "Initially, they left but returned on June 30. We tried to resist, but they continued to cut the trees from the base and load them into trucks. We also informed the local councillor and the local cops. There was no one from the locality involved," claimed one protester on the condition of anonymity.
