‘Bring Your Own New Clean Energy': a proposed fix for Illinois' power grid shortcomings draws criticism from manufacturers
Data centers, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing projects all are utilizing more energy than state lawmakers say they could have imagined when they passed the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act.
'When we negotiated the bill, no one talked about data centers. We had heard of them, but no one ever saw them becoming an issue,' Senator Bill Cunningham said. 'They've become a gigantic issue.'
Environmentalists want the state to require any new project looking to set up shop in Illinois that needs over 25 megawatts of energy will have to supply their own clean energy.
'I think the whole country is going to face this the demands of data centers,' Jen Walling with the Illinois Environmental Council said. 'You know, nothing is free. We're paying for it somehow. So that is a way that we need to address that by bringing cheap renewable energy.'
They even have a name for the idea.
'We're looking at 'bring your own new clean energy,' Walling said. 'We have our anagram of B.Y.O.N.C.E'
Businesses say the idea will have a very different economic impact than the global sensation its named after.
'If you're going to add significant cost to the state of Illinois in energy, you're going to see less economic development and less large projects coming to the state of Illinois,' President and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers Association Mark Denzler said.
Illinois would be the only state with this policy, according to Denzler, and he says it would put the state at a huge disadvantage,
'Illinois is competing, for example, against Wisconsin and Michigan and Ohio. And they can assure that company that they can hook up to the grid and they can start constructing within a few months versus Illinois. It might take a couple of years to build this new project and get hooked up,' Denzler said.
Other ideas included in the draft energy package included a partial lift of the nuclear moratorium. The ban on new nuclear construction was first put in place in the 1970's. New nuclear energy is seen as a long term play for more energy production. Illinois already has one of the biggest nuclear fleets as part of it's power grid.

‘Rage Against the Regime' protests planned across US: What to know
SAN ANGELO, Texas (KLST/NEXSTAR) – Critics of the President Trump's immigration and economic agenda will be 'raging against the regime' this weekend during protests in cities nationwide. Saturday's 'Rage Against the Regime' protests, organized by volunteers of the 50501 movement, are being held in response to what the group describes as a number of 'threats' to democracy and human rights. Organizers are focusing in on the current administration's 'weaponization of ICE against our communities, construction of concentration camps, covering up of the Epstein Files, attacks on transgender rights, and its dismantling of Medicaid, SNAP, USAID, the Department of Education, NOAA, and the National Weather Service,' among other issues, according to a 50501 press release. Nearly 350 'Rage Against the Regime' protests are scheduled for Saturday, according to a website operated by 50501. More than 100 additional protests and demonstrations are also scheduled to take place Saturday. The day of the rallies also happens to fall on the birthday of Vice President Vance, though 50501 spokesperson Hunter Dunn, in a statement to USA Today, said the coinciding dates were merely that — a coincidence. The 50501 movement, which is an abbreviation of the phrase '50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement,' had previously partnered to organize the 'Hands Off' and 'No Kings' protests earlier this year. The group has also promoted several other rallies of 'days of action' since Trump took office. As they have during previous protests, 50501 urges non-violence during demonstrations and rallies. A guide provided to activists and organizers also calls for designated volunteers to help with conflict resolution and safety at the events. In San Angelo, Texas, Saturday's protests were given a different name out of a desire to emphasize its peaceful intent. 'This event is being called RISE Against the Regime rather than 'Rage,' … This is intentional due to our goal to have a peaceful display of opposition to what the current administration has been doing to our nation and our community,' a representative for West Texas Indivisible, the group organizing the protest, said. 'We hope to encourage others to connect with us in an effort to build a supportive community, promote civic engagement, and work together to make the change we want to see,' the representative said, adding that those wishing to bring signs should refrain from using explicit language or imagery. The 'Rage Against the Regime' moniker of Saturday's protests, meanwhile, is a reference to the Los Angeles rock band Rage Against the Machine. Dunn even quoted a song from the band in a press release ahead of Saturday's events. A representative for 50501 was not immediately available to comment. Trump, meanwhile, has brushed off questions about 50501's efforts in the past, saying ahead of the 'No Kings' demonstrations in June that he wouldn't liken himself to a monarch. 'I don't feel like a king; I have to go through hell to get stuff approved,' he told reporters.

New tariffs could raise prices of Ozempic, Wegovy
(NEXSTAR) – A trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union is expected to impose a 15% tax on pretty much all goods imported from Europe, from fancy French wines to sleek German cars and in-demand pharmaceuticals. Some of the most recognizable brand names that could be impacted include Ozempic and Wegovy, two injectable drugs that have grown popular in recent years for their abilities to treat diabetes and promote weight loss. Both are made by Novo Nordisk, a Danish company. But the European drugs are extremely popular here in the U.S. Wegovy – the version of the drug that's FDA-approved to treat obesity – has about 200,000 weekly prescriptions in the U.S., according to Novo Nordisk. Even before the new tariffs, many people have found the medications to be prohibitively expensive. Without insurance, they cost about $500 a month. What is the Presidential Fitness Test? It's usually cheaper for those who can get the drug covered by their health plan. Novo says of its patients who have coverage in the U.S., 85% pay $25 or less per month. After the tariffs take effect, the prices of importing these medications into the U.S. will go up, but who will pay that tax isn't straightforward. Rena Conti, an associate professor at Boston University's Questrom School of Business, told NBC News that drug companies could just raise their price list right away to offset the higher cost. Those without insurance might notice the sticker price change, but those with coverage could end up paying more in higher premiums. 'The big picture is: The cost of imported drugs is about to become more expensive for all Americans,' Joe Brusuelas, principal and chief economist for RSM US, said in an interview with Axios. Other name-brand drugs like Botox, Viagra and Keytruda (a cancer medication) are also manufactured in Europe and impacted by the tariffs. Some drug generics were supposed to be carved out of the deal, but details were still pending as of Thursday. When asked how Ozempic and Wegovy would be impacted by the new 15% tariff, a Novo Nordisk spokesperson told Nexstar the company 'remains focused on improving patient access and affordability, and we will continue to work to find solutions that help people access the medication they need.'
