All the CNG city buses allocated to Vijayawada under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) were phased out after completing their service life. Currently, all city buses are diesel-run, contributing significantly to air pollution in the city.
Vijayawada, falling under the NTR district jurisdiction, operates 163 city ordinary and 106 Metro Luxury services across the Governorpet-1, Governorpet-2, Vidyadharapuram, and Ibrahimpatnam bus depots, while the remaining city buses are operated from Gannavaram and Vuyyuru depots, now under Krishna district.
"Currently, the average occupancy ratio (OR) in city buses stands at 60 per cent, and we anticipate the OR to surge to 95 per cent or even 100 per cent after the free bus scheme rolls out for women. To manage the extra passenger rush during peak hours, RTC will rope in private school buses and run auxiliary services," another RTC official explained.
"Not inducting new buses into the city fleet will create more traffic chaos and push working men towards purchasing more motor vehicles, significantly choking city roads with pollution and traffic. When regular male passengers who travel daily by city bus find it difficult to get a seat or even a place to stand inside the buses, it will discourage them from using city buses and drive them towards private transport," said M V Anjaneyulu, Secretary of the Tax Payers Association of Vijayawada.

New Delhi: The government is finalizing the operational guidelines for installing electric vehicle public charging stations in the country under the ₹10,900 crore PM E-drive scheme based on aggregated demand from state-owned companies to reduce the upfront costs, according to two people aware of the development. The ministry of heavy industries (MHI) will install over 72,000 chargers across the country based on the demand aggregated by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Airports Authority of India (AAI), Indian Railways and state governments. 'The guidelines are in the works, they are in the final stage. The EV (electric vehicle) charging infrastructure component has a large share in the PM E-drive scheme– ₹2,000 crore–so the guidelines need to cover demands for charging stations made by all stakeholders," said one official aware of the development on the condition of official added that based on the extensive studies conducted by central public sector enterprises about the locations of these charging stations, MHI will assess the demands and release funds for incentives. 'The same will also apply for the demands made by state governments," the official said. This demand aggregation is critical as it will map the land and power requirements for the EV charging ecosystem, according to an earlier publicly available draft of the guidelines for EV charging infrastructure. The PM E-drive has been extended by two years till scheme was extended via notification on 7 August because funds critical to boosting electric mobility via public transportation had remained unused till that date. PM E-Drive scheme gets extra mileage, to roll on till 2027
The Centre has extended the validity of the PM E-Drive scheme by two years for electric buses , ambulances and electric trucks . A gazette notification said the scheme will now lapse in March 2028 instead of March 2026. Fund allocation for the scheme has been maintained at ₹10,900 crore. The heavy industries ministry said no additional allocation will be made under the scheme. "In case the funds for the scheme or its relevant sub-components are exhausted prior to the terminal date of the scheme (March 31, 2028), then the scheme or its relevant subcomponents will be closed accordingly," the ministry said, adding that the terminal date for registered e-2W, registered e-rickshaws and e-cart and registered e-3W (L5) will be March 31, 2026. Union heavy industries minister HD Kumaraswamy had last month launched a portal to facilitate subsidies for electric trucks under the scheme. "Diesel trucks, though constituting only 3 per cent of the total vehicle population, contribute to 42 per cent of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and significantly worsen air pollution," Kumaraswamy had said. To encourage decarbonisation, the Centre is offering an incentive of up to ₹9.6 lakh for switching to electric trucks. The scheme, with an outlay of ₹500 crore, is expected to support the deployment of about 5,600 e-trucks across the country. An official statement said a dedicated provision for 1,100 e-trucks registered in Delhi has been made with an estimated outlay of ₹100 crore. Beneficiaries will need to submit scrapping certificates of old trucks to be eligible to claim subsidies under the scheme. Officials said these certificates can be purchased through authorised retailers from scrapping centres.
