Former Iowa football star tabbed pivotal rookie for 2025 NFL season
Most of the time, these players have been located in the trenches or at the tight end positions, as the Hawkeyes have had a lot of success putting players into the NFL at those positions. But recently, some players at other spots have been game changers as well.
Just look at Cooper DeJean in Philadelphia last season. He jumped onto the scene as a rookie, making huge plays left and right, especially in their playoff run. He was a big reason why the Eagles won the Super Bowl, and he was definitely a pivotal rookie last season. And another former Hawkeye could be in a similar position to play a huge role as a rookie.
NFL.com released an article naming one pivotal rookie for every NFL team in 2025, and one former Hawkeye football star made the list.
Which former Hawkeye made NFL.com's list?
NFL.com listed Kaleb Johnson as the most pivotal rookie for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. The Steelers selected the former Hawkeye star running back in the third round of the NFL Draft after former first-round pick Najee Harris left in free agency. Johnson was slated as the third-string running back on the Steelers' latest depth chart behind Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, but NFL.com is projecting a big year for him.
Despite a downturn late last season, the expectation is the Steelers' defense will be good, if not great, in 2025. There is less to be convinced about on offense, which is why I'm going with Johnson over first-round pick Derrick Harmon here, even though I'm bullish on Harmon's prospects of becoming a staple on the interior of the defensive line. Aaron Rodgers is going to have a hard time maximizing his potential at 41 years old without the threat of a strong running game. Jaylen Warren has yet to prove he's capable of long-term bell-cow duty, leaving the door open for Johnson to claim the spot. Pittsburgh drafted him to be the quintessential one-cut runner who fights for the extra yards even though there's not much razzle-dazzle to his game. -NFL.com
Last season at Iowa, Johnson rushed for 1,537 yards and a school record 21 touchdowns en route to being named an All-American. He was an absolute stud and a big reason why Iowa's offense took a massive step forward in the first year under Tim Lester.
Now Johnson will get the chance to show what he can do at the professional level. And Hawkeye fans won't have to wait long to see him make his debut. Johnson is slated to play in the Steelers' first preseason game this Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

Tanner McKee stars vs. Bengals: What to know about Eagles backup QB
The Philadelphia Eagles didn't play their starters in preseason Week 1, which opened the door for third-year quarterback Tanner McKee to star in the team's 34-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. McKee – a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft – played a majority of the Eagles' offensive snaps with Jalen Hurts sitting out the game. The Stanford product completed 20 of 25 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns in an impressive showing. McKee also showed an ability to run the Eagles' signature "Tush Push" play, scoring a 1-yard touchdown on his lone carry of the game. McKee's strong showing may not come as a major surprise to Eagles fans. The 25-year-old made one start during the 2024 NFL season, completing 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns in Philadelphia's 20-13 Week 18 win over the New York Giants. The Eagles thought highly enough of McKee to trade 2024 backup quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Cleveland Browns during the offseason. The Eagles acquired another quarterback, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, as part of that deal, but is still paved the way for McKee to assume the backup position behind Hurts. After McKee's performance Thursday night, Philadelphia has to be feeling good about what it has in the former sixth-round pick. Here's what to know about McKee as he enters his third NFL season. Tanner McKee college stats McKee spent three seasons at Stanford and was a starter during two of them. He completed 63.2% of his career college passes for 5,336 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in what was then David Shaw's pro-style offense. McKee's final season saw him complete 62% of his passes for a career-best 2,947 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. That helped make the 6-6, 228-pound passer a legitimate NFL draft prospect and ultimately led to his selection in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. 2023 NFL Draft quarterbacks McKee was the penultimate of 14 quarterbacks selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. Below is a look at the full list: Bryce Young, Panthers (Round 1, Pick 1) C.J. Stroud, Texans (Round 1, Pick 2) Anthony Richardson, Colts (Round 1, Pick 4) Will Levis, Titans (Round 2, Pick 33) Hendon Hooker, Lions (Round 3, Pick 68) Jake Haener, Saints (Round 4, Pick 127) Stetson Bennett IV, Rams (Round 4, Pick 128) Aidan O'Connell, Raiders (Round 4, Pick 135) Clayton Tune, Cardinals (Round 5, Pick 139) Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Browns (Round 5, Pick 140) Sean Clifford, Packers (Round 5, Pick 149) Jaren Hall, Vikings (Round 5, Pick 164) Tanner McKee, Eagles (Round 6, Pick 188) Max Duggan, Chargers (Round 7, Pick 239) Tanner McKee Madden rating Despite McKee's solid showing in limited NFL action to date, he has a Madden rating of just 61 overall. That's tied with Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third-highest rating among the four quarterbacks on Philadelphia's roster. McKee wasn't pleased with the rating. In a recent video from Eagles camp, McKee was stunned by the low number, promising to give Madden ratings adjusters something to think about come the Eagles' preseason debut. "Watch Thursday," he said. "Tune in. Be ready. Pump it up." Eagles QB depth chart While McKee may be further down the Eagles depth chart in Madden, he has firmly planted himself behind Hurts as the team's No. 2 quarterback. Below is a look at the pecking order in Philadelphia's QB room, according to the team's unofficial depth chart: Jalen Hurts Tanner McKee Dorian Thompson-Robinson Kyle McCord This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: What to know about Tanner McKee after Eagles QB stars vs. Bengals

Baltimore Ravens rookie CB Bilhal Kone out for season after gruesome leg injury
Thursday night marked the start of Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Things kicked off in Baltimore with the Ravens earning a 24-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts. This was the first NFL action for the Ravens' rookies. Unfortunately for sixth-round rookie cornerback Bilhal Kone, it'll be his only action for the season after a gruesome knee injury. (Editor's note: Due to the nature of the injury, we have chosen not to show it here. Those who wish to see the injury may see it here.) Kone tore a ligament in his left knee late in the first quarter against the Colts. Kone was defending Indianapolis wideout Ashton Dulin near the goal line on third and 10 and fell as Daniel Jones' pass went incomplete. 'A little weird': Deion Sanders addresses son Shedeur's NFL debut with Cleveland Browns Kone immediately grabbed his leg in pain. He was put in an air cast and taken off the field. Ravens coach John Harbaugh later confirmed he'd be out for the rest of the year. "[Kone] is going to be out for the season," he said after the game. "It's a torn ligament in his knee, unfortunately." Harbaugh complimented Kone's play, especially his effort on that incompletion that forced a Colts field goal. "That play, [he] made a heck of a play," Harbaugh said. "And then even seeing him in the locker room just now was really hard. But like I told him, the sun will come up tomorrow... You'll get this taken care of. You'll be rehabbing, you're part of our team, and you'll be back. So it's just not on the time that you hope for." Western alum Bilhal Kone out for the year with a torn ACL/ Harbaugh's words lend themselves to something more: this team has plans for Kone for the future. # Kone is the second significant injury in the Ravens' secondary ahead of the season. Baltimore will be without safety Ar'Darius Washington in 2025 after he tore his Achilles in May. Latest plan for new stadium: Bears give update on their future in Chicago Ravens CB depth chart Given the Ravens' depth at the position, the team wasn't expecting to rely on Kone much as a rookie. Here's how things look at the position during the preseason:
