Harry Maguire says Scotland fan jeers went 'too far' as he does full U-turn on post match Hampden bravado

Daily Record16 hours ago
The Man United defender scored an own goal in England's' 3-1 victory against their nearest rivals in 2023
Harry Maguire has revealed that getting ironically taunted by Scotland fans while playing at Hampden for England ranks as the 'toughest moment' of his career so far.

The Manchester United defender was going through a tricky spell on the pitch when Gareth Southgate's men rolled into town in September 2023 to mark the 150th anniversary of the first game between the two old enemies.

The Three Lions ran out 3-1 winners, extending their unbeaten record against the Scots having last tasted defeat against them in a Euro 2000 qualifier at Wembley in 1999.

The big centre back's performances were the source of constant negativity, with Maguire's own mother coming out publicly to call to an end to the scrutiny.
And after appearing as a half-time for England in Glasgow's south-east side, Maguire was mocked by the home supporters, who ironically jeered every pass from the former Leicester and Hull City man.
Within 21 minutes of his arrival, Maguire had turned the ball into his own net from Andy Robertson's cross to give Scotland a lifeline before Harry Kane rounded off the scoring.
Looking back on the incident, the 32-year-old - who had been stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford earlier that year - reckons the abuse went too far.
Speaking to Man United legend Rio Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, he said: "The toughest moment personally was probably when I got jeered at Scotland away playing for England.

"I'd had an amazing career for England, and then coming on the pitch there, (the jeers) came from their fans.
"They would probably say it was a bit of banter, but it got to a stage where I think people had realised that it had gone past the mark of banter.
"That was the moment that really turned and I had a lot of help around me then. I had a lot of people reach out to message me (including) ex-players, I am really appreciative of that."

In the wake of the Three Lions' win at Hampden, Maguire had brushed off the taunts by saying he could take the banter from the Tartan Army.
"It is a little bit of banter and it is a hostile environment, coming away to Scotland", he stated.
"We knew coming here, when you hear the national anthem and the way they disrespect that, we knew it would be hostile and in the second half I got most of it.
"I am happy to go with that, don't worry about that."

Man Utd's bid to hijack Liverpool signing revealed with medical taking place

Liverpool are on the brink of signing defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma despite a late move from Manchester United. The 18-year-old centre-half is set to compete a £26million move to Anfield and will now travel to Merseyside to agree personal terms and undergo a medical. Having made major additions elsewhere in the team, Liverpool are desperate to strengthen their backline before the summer transfer window closes with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi also targeted. Liverpool were among a host of clubs interested in signing Leoni, who has emerged as one of the brightest young defenders in Italy. Both Inter Milan and AC Milan were keen to keep him in Serie A with The Times reporting United also showed late interest in signing him. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Newcastle United were also keen but Leoni swiftly made the decision to join Liverpool where he will line up alongside a player he has described as his inspiration in Virgil van Dijk. Leoni will join van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez as Arne Slot's options at the back, effectively replacing Jarell Quansah in the squad after his £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions have also opened talks with Crystal Palace over a move for Guehi. Palace value the England international at £35million given he has just one year left on his contract at Selhurst Park. While Guehi wants to join Liverpool, he is also prepared to see out the remaining 12 months of his contract in south east London before making the switch next summer. More Trending Liverpool remain in talks with Palace, hoping to close the gap in valuation. The addition of Leoni will take Liverpool's spending to above £300m this summer, comfortably the biggest outlay in the Premier League. Florian Wirtz (£116m), Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£29m) have all arrived on Merseyside this summer. Liverpool are also still hopeful of signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United with the Swede adamant he will not play for the Magpies again. Wayne Rooney responds to Tom Brady's scathing criticism - 'Very unfair'

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney was sacked by Birmingham back in January 2024 having been at the heart of some brutal criticism from NFL icon Wayne Rooney during his time at the club Wayne Rooney has hit out at Tom Brady 's 'unfair' comments about his work ethic during his doomed spell with Birmingham City. The Manchester United icon spent a short period with the Championship side during the 2023/24 season. ‌ ‌ Speaking on the Amazon Prime documentary Brady & The Blues: Birmingham City, the NFL icon was filmed saying to business manager Ben Rawitz: 'I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic." ‌ In reply, Rawitz said: 'Comes across as lackadaisical.' And now, Rooney has responded to Brady's comments for the first time. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney show, he said: 'I think it was a very unfair comment. When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess really. Hence the fact that, the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward. 'We knew that and I think, Tom come in once which was the day before a game where the day is a little bit light anyway and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time, maybe he does now… 'But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that, so that's why I'm really disappointed with the comment because football is not NFL - NFL works for 3 months a year, players do need rest as well, so I think he was very unfair the way he's come out and portrayed that. 'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively, he's one of the greatest - if not the greatest athletes - of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good. ‌ 'I think what they have done is got the players out they need to get out because when I was there, you had Tony Mowbray, Gary Rowett after me who also struggled as well… but yeah bit disappointed but nothing too serious so move on.' Since Rooney's departure, Birmingham have suffered relegation to League One, only to bounce back at the first attempt under current boss Chris Davies. Rooney's managerial career has however stuttered following another sacking by Plymouth Argyle after just 25 matches and he has yet to return to the dugout since.

Transfer news live: Liverpool agree fee for defender, Man Utd target Baleba, Isak's Newcastle future

Just a few days to go until the start of the new Premier League season and club's are looking to finalise any deals for new signings ahead of their campaigns beginning. Manchester United have brought in a new forward line of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha and have their sights set on more incomings. Gianluigi Donnarumma was left out of PSG's Super Cup squad against Tottenham and will leave the club this summer while Ruben Amorim is pushing the hierarchy to sign midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton. Liverpool, meanwhile, have agreed a fee with teenage defender Giovanni Leoni as they hope to bolster their defence. The club are also in talks with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi and are pursuing Newcastle's Alexander Isak. The Magpies do not wish to sell, but the Reds may be encouraged by Isak's insistence that his Newcastle career is over, with it reported that he will not wish to reintegrate with the side, even if he stays beyond the deadline. Elsewhere, Spurs are also preparing to boost their own forward line and want to sign Palace 's Eberechi Eze. The Eagles want a fee in excess of £60m and an official offer could soon go in though Palace's Community Shield win over Liverpool may now make a deal harder to negotiate. Gianluigi Donnarumma's agent reveals his preferred destination 'Premier League is the right step for Gigio in my view, we're working on it,' said Enzo Raiola. 'There are zero talks with Italian clubs. We are still shocked by PSG behaviour with Gigio.' Manchester City are keen on the keeper, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 18-year-old centre-back is set to become their sixth major summer signing and take their spending in this window past £300m. As reported in the Independent's 'Inside Football' newsletter on Friday, Spurs have ramped up interest in the 27-year-old after the injury to James Maddison, amid a widespread belief that the saga might finally come to a head by the start of the Premier League season. That would coincide with the expiration of Eze's release clause for this window. Arsenal have long been interested in Eze, and are viewed as the Crystal Palace player's first preference, but the fact that no proper transfer bid has yet materialised means there is a chance for Spurs to move forward. The reason then was not yet failed purchases, the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell or even Alexander Isak. Or at least, just Isak. Newcastle had already known about the Swede's ambitions to leave for months. Now, the same fears were growing about Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon, with the added concern that any unrest could lead to more agitation in the dressing room. The mood was so foreboding that Howe's staff even asked others in football about potential solutions. It was a huge shift from the satisfaction felt mere weeks before, and the end of a season that was the club's best in decades. The Carabao Cup closed that long wait for a trophy, bringing a sense of release around the club. The final-day qualification for a second Champions League campaign in three seasons then seemed to take that further; to embolden everyone, and afford the club the financial assurance to really press on. There was no longer a PSR need to sell stars like Isak. The damage Newcastle's disastrous summer could do to their wider project Newcastle have become a laughing stock over how comically haphazard their summer transfer business has been Miguel Delaney14 August 2025 03:00 After Manchester United hit rock bottom, are the good times finally coming? If nothing else, Ruben Amorim does not try to sugarcoat things. The manager who had said he had perhaps the worst team in Manchester United 's history stood in the middle of the Old Trafford pitch and said: 'Today, after this disaster season.' The disaster season: piercing as some of the criticisms of a campaign where United had fared worse than had seemed possible, few were as pithy as Amorim's description. The rest of his message marked a real shift in tone. 'I want to tell you the good days are coming,' he added. That was May. In Amorim's own timescale, therefore, the good days are arriving, beginning now. There is a sense they have to: not merely for Amorim, who was probably guilty of smiling exaggeration when he said on the pre-season tour of the United States that he wanted to stay for 20 years but is actually in the last two of his contract, but for the club. Comparisons with the past are neither invariably accurate nor helpful, but the immediate precedent is of Erik ten Hag, retained after a disappointing season with the prospect the next could be better and sacked in October after some £200m of summer spending. Now Sir Jim Ratcliffe has disposed of some 450 members of staff but not Amorim. Furnished with new attackers, in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, his summer outlay is up to around £200m. After hitting rock bottom, are the good times finally coming for Manchester United? A disastrous season left Ruben Amorim under pressure after just months in the job - but a productive summer gives hope of brighter times ahead Richard Jolly14 August 2025 02:00 Premier League 2025/26 predictions: Champions, top four, relegation, best signing, top scorer and more The Premier League is back and just 33 days after Chelsea appeared to bring the curtain down on the 2024/25 season with their thumping win in the Club World Cup final, champions Liverpool kick off their title defence against Bournemouth at Anfield. The transfer window continues to rumble on with plenty of deals yet to materialise, which could shift the trajectory of many teams, notably Arne Slot's side and Newcastle, with Alexander Isak's future still in doubt. Arsenal appear closer than ever after near misses in recent years, with Viktor Gyokeres brought in to spearhead Mikel Arteta's title charge, while Pep Guardiola has rebuilt Man City quickly and Chelsea will hope to ride the momentum of their victory over PSG last month. Manchester United 's lavish outlay has enabled them to revamp swiftly, Tottenham begin a new era under Thomas Frank, while newcomers Burnley, Leeds and Sunderland hope to avoid a quick return to the ever chaotic Championship. When asked why he chose to wear the No. 18 shirt, Grealish said: "There is a reason. There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore No. 18 here. "So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point.
