California's Culinary scene reaches new heights with 2025 MICHELIN guide selection

Hans India6 days ago
The 2025 MICHELIN Guide California has set a new benchmark for global gastronomy, unveiling a selection that celebrates not only exceptional cuisine but also innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship. With two new Three MICHELIN Star restaurants—Providence in Hollywood and Somni in West Hollywood—joining the elite ranks, California now boasts eight restaurants at the highest level of culinary recognition. With the addition of the new restaurants, California has the highest number of Michelin-Starred restaurants in the US.
Chef Michael Cimarusti's Providence was elevated from Two Stars for its extraordinary seafood-driven menu rooted in California flavours, classic techniques, and sustainable sourcing. Dishes like lobster mousse and roasted monkfish with black truffle earned the restaurant its coveted third star. Meanwhile, Somni, led by Chef Aitor Zabala, made a dream debut, offering a meticulously curated and artistic dining experience that seamlessly blends Spanish influences with cutting-edge creativity. Joining them in the Two Star category are Enclos in Sonoma, which impressed with refined seasonal dishes and New England nostalgia, and Kiln in San Francisco, known for its Nordic-inspired tasting menus emphasizing fermentation and preservation. Five restaurants have earned their first MICHELIN Star: Lilo (Carlsbad), Mori Nozomi (Los Angeles), Restaurant Ki (Los Angeles), Silvers Omakase (Santa Barbara), and Sun Moon Studio (Oakland). These diverse establishments represent a spectrum of cuisines—Californian, Japanese, Korean Contemporary, and more—underscoring the multicultural heart of California's food landscape.
Sustainability also took center stage. Two restaurants—Enclos and Sons & Daughters in San Francisco—were awarded the MICHELIN Green Star for their eco-conscious practices, such as in-house dairy programs, regenerative agriculture, and waste minimization through preservation and fermentation.
In the value-for-money category, 123 eateries were honored with the Bib Gourmand distinction, which rewards establishments offering excellent food at moderate prices. New additions include Atelier Manna in Encinitas and Pho Momma in Sacramento, demonstrating that great cuisine in California is accessible at all levels. The 2025 ceremony also celebrated individuals with special awards. Chef Ki Kim of Restaurant Ki received the Michelin Young Chef Award, while Chris Barnum-Dann of Localis won the Michelin Sommelier Award. The Exceptional Cocktails Award went to the bar team at Eylan, and Nick Peyton of Cyrus was recognized for Outstanding Service.
Altogether, the 2025 MICHELIN Guide California includes 548 restaurants across 55 cuisine types, cementing the state's position as a dynamic culinary capital. With its diversity of flavours, sustainable ethos, and commitment to excellence, California's gastronomic journey continues to inspire both seasoned gourmands and everyday diners. MLB Speedway Classic: Bristol Motor Speedway transforms into historic baseball venue; check details

Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee is set to host the MLB Speedway Classic on Saturday (August 2). This will mark the first Major League Baseball game ever played in the state. The iconic NASCAR track, famously dubbed 'The Last Great Colosseum,' has undergone a remarkable transformation to become a baseball stadium for a highly anticipated matchup between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds. This historic event is set to draw over 85,000 fans, potentially setting a new MLB regular-season attendance record. The concept of hosting a baseball game at Bristol Motor Speedway took root in 2022 when Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB's senior vice president of global events, visited the venue. He expressed, 'I will send the notes, but this place looks viable. It is going to take a couple of years, but I think we can get this done.' Three years later, his vision has materialized. The speedway's infield now features a regulation baseball field, constructed to meet MLB standards. The transformation, which began in late June 2025, involved collaboration with industry leaders like BaAM Productions, BrightView, and Populous, known for creating unique MLB fields at venues like Fort Bragg and the Field of Dreams. The resulting diamond boasts dimensions of 330 feet down the foul lines, 400 feet to center, and 375 and 384 feet to the right and left-field alleys, respectively, strategically placed between Turns 3 and 4 of the track. The MLB Speedway Classic represents a bold step for baseball, blending innovation with community spirit. 'To see the joy and memories made,' Yolkut said. "There will be people that talk about being at Bristol Motor Speedway for that record-setting game and that spectacle,' he added. Fans can catch the action live on FOX at 6 PM ET on August 2, 2025. The MLB Speedway Classic is a fusion of baseball and motorsport culture. The Braves and Reds will wear special uniforms, with the Braves sporting navy hats with red flames and the Reds featuring Wonder Bread-inspired catcher's gear, paying homage to Talladega Nights. Pregame festivities include a concert featuring Tim McGraw and Pitbull, alongside a fan zone with performances by Jake Owen, food trucks, batting cages, and the World Series trophy on display. Adding to the event's significance, Hall of Famers Chipper Jones and Johnny Bench, representing the Braves and Reds, will throw the ceremonial first pitch.

‘Mere dost bhi saare NRI the': Janhvi Kapoor recalls faking a Spanish accent in school to fit in; why children mask their true selves to be accepted

Fitting in can often come at the cost of authenticity, especially during school years when social acceptance feels paramount. Many young people alter parts of themselves, be it appearance, behaviour, or even speech, to feel included or seen. Janhvi Kapoor opened up about how she once adopted a fake accent in school just to blend in with her peers, something she now calls 'very stupid.' In an interview with Mashable India, Janhvi said, 'I studied in a school where you could pick your second language, first being English because all of the teachers were mainly from out of India. And I, for some reason, picked Spanish. I don't know why.' Admitting that she can only speak basic Spanish, she added, 'I think woh hota hai na IB school mein thi, aur mere dost bhi saare NRI the, toh main bhi fake accent laga ke cool lange ki koshish karti thi (I think it was because I was in an IB school, and all my friends were NRIs too, so I used to put on a fake accent and try to sound cool), which was very stupid. But then I realised that if I want to tell stories of this country, then I need to understand the people of this country, sound like them, tell their stories. I need to speak to this audience and I can't do that with like, Spanish.' This touches on a familiar feeling of changing oneself to belong and raises important questions about identity, self-esteem, and social pressures that start early and often stay with us. Jai Arora, counselling psychologist and co-founder of Kirana Counselling, tells 'The major psycho-social conflict for a 12-18 year old is 'Identity vs Role Confusion,' meaning that their identity is still not formed and are rather exploring different 'versions of the Self' and to see which one is more comforting.' Peer approval can feel like the ultimate validation. Arora adds, 'In school settings, kids may notice certain behaviours, ways of speaking, or even cultural references being more 'accepted' or admired. In this context, faking an accent isn't just about language; it's about survival. It's an attempt to bridge a perceived gap between who they are and who they think 'they need to be' to belong.' When children feel they must 'perform' to be liked, they may slowly internalize the idea that their natural self isn't good enough. Over time, this can create confusion between their authentic personality and the persona they put on for others. Arora continues, 'Some might grow out of it, by therapy, finding what they truly like, finding meaningful connections. But for others, it can lead to emotional dissonance, anxiety in social situations, or a fragile sense of self that's built on external validation rather than inner confidence.' Authenticity and unconditional positive regard. Arora suggests, 'The first step is creating environments — at home and in school, where individuality is celebrated, not judged. When kids are praised for who they are rather than how well they 'fit in,' they learn to value their uniqueness. Open conversations help too.' Parents and educators must also watch what they model. Children pick up quickly on whether we, as adults, alter our behavior to match social settings. Authenticity isn't just taught, it's demonstrated.
