Five carmakers to recall over 76,000 vehicles for faulty parts
Kia Corp., BMW Korea and three other carmakers will voluntarily recall more than 76,000 vehicles to fix faulty components, the transport ministry said Wednesday.
The five companies, including Renault Korea Motors Co., Tesla Korea and Jaguar Land Rover Korea, are recalling a combined 76,382 units of 37 different models, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a press release.
The problems that prompted the recall include a faulty air bag system in Kia's Niro electric vehicle, problems in the cooling pump wire connector of BMW's 528i sedan and transformer software problems in Renault Korea's Arkana sport utility vehicle, according to the ministry.
Tesla will recall a faulty electric power assisted steering system in the Model Y SUV, it said.
Vehicle owners can check the government's homepage at www.car.go.kr or call 080-357-2500 to see if their vehicles are subject to the recall, the ministry said. (Yonhap)

Tesla tops monthly imported car sales for 1st time in Korea
Tesla has claimed the top spot in monthly imported car sales in the South Korean market for the first time. According to data from the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association on Friday, the US-based electric vehicle powerhouse sold 6,570 units in May, a 57.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. Released in April, this new flagship mid-size SUV sold 4,961 units, accounting for 94.9 percent of Tesla's sales. The Model Y Long Range, boasting approximately 500 kilometers driving range — 100 kilometers longer than the standard model — also sold 1,276 units. The EV maker's robust sales have partly boosted the overall domestic imported car market. Last month's imported car sales reached 28,189 units, marking a 16.4 percent increase from last year. The cumulative sales from January to May rose by 10 percent, totaling 100,352 units. 'The rise in new registrations of imported passenger cars in May can be attributed to a steady supply from certain brands and the impact of new model launches,' stated KAIDA Vice Chairman Jung Yoon-young. Although Jung did not specify Tesla as the key contributor, figures show Tesla's two Model Y variants were named as the first and third best-selling models, respectively. Industry insiders point to Tesla focusing its supply on Korea, which has likely led to a sales boost, amid global declines. From January to April, the company saw sales drops of 34.6 percent in Europe and 9.1 percent in North America.

Kia's EV3 earns top safety rating in Euro NCAP crash test
Kia Corp. said Friday its EV3 compact electric sport utility vehicle has received the highest rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme, a key safety benchmark for vehicles sold in Europe. The EV3 was recognized for its cabin integrity during crash scenarios and for its suite of advanced safety features. In particular, the model earned top marks in the side-impact test under the adult occupant protection category. Launched in 1997, Euro NCAP conducts rigorous crash and safety performance tests on vehicles sold in the European market and publishes annual results. The EV3 was also praised for its driver condition monitoring system and automatic emergency call system, among other features. Kia said the rating applies to EV3 models equipped with the DriveWise advanced driver assistant system pack, which includes forward collision-avoidance assist and highway driving assist 2 features. Auto exports inch down in April on US tariff impact
South Korea's automobile exports declined slightly in April from a year earlier, largely due to a sharp drop in shipments to the United States following Washington's imposition of steep tariffs on foreign-made cars, government data showed Tuesday. The value of outbound shipments of automobiles came to $6.53 billion last month, down 3.8 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. By region, exports to North America tumbled 17.8 percent on-year to $3.36 billion, with shipments to the US plunging 19.6 percent to $2.89 billion. In contrast, exports to the European Union surged 26.7 percent to $953 million, driven by robust sales of Kia Corp.'s EV3 and Hyundai Motor Co.'s Casper Electric. On the domestic front, car sales increased for the third consecutive month in April, growing 6.7 percent from a year earlier. The rise was led by strong demand for electric vehicles and hybrid models, which saw sales growth of 50.3 percent and 29.9 percent on-year, respectively. EVs and hybrids accounted for 46 percent of the total 151,000 vehicles sold in the domestic market last month. The South Korean auto industry is closely monitoring the impact of the 25 percent tariff imposed by the Donald Trump administration, which took effect on April 3. In response, the government announced plans to inject an additional 2 trillion won ($1.43 billion) in liquidity into the industry, on top of the previously pledged 13 trillion won in policy financing. Seoul also vowed to consider a range of measures to bolster the domestic automotive sector, including expanded subsidies for EV purchases, extended tax incentives for new vehicle buyers and efforts to diversify export markets. Meanwhile, South Korea and the US are scheduled to begin working-level consultations later this week to draw up a comprehensive agreement by early July.
