BMW 5 Series sells over 10,000 cars in Korea in H1
The model recorded 12,786 units sold from January to June, marking a 15 percent increase from the same period last year.
The 5 Series continues to show strong demand in the Korean market, offering robust standard features on entry-level trims, alongside a broad range of power train options. These include the plug-in hybrid 530e xDrive, the high-performance 550e xDrive and the fully electric four-wheel drive i5 xDrive40. Since its eighth-generation debut in Korea in 2023, the lineup has expanded to 10 power train configurations.
Leading sales was the BMW 520i, which sold 7,116. The model comes standard equipped with popular features such as adaptive light-emitting diode headlights with high-beam assist, BMW's curved display, a heads-up display and 19-inch wheels. It also includes advanced driver-assistance systems like active cruise control with Stop & Go and lane-keeping assist.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle models such as the BMW 530e and 550e xDrive are also gaining traction. The 530e, with a combined output of 299 horsepower and a range of up to 73 kilometers on electric power alone, sold 1,512 vehicles. The high-performance 550e xDrive delivers 489 horsepower and can operate for 62 kilometers on a single charge.
Meanwhile, the fully electric i5 sedan posted strong results with 828 sold, the most among electric models in its segment.

Lee appoints 6 vice ministers
President Lee Jae Myung appointed six vice ministers and six vice ministerial-level officials, including those for education and science, in the latest appointments of senior officials, the presidential office said Sunday. Choi Eun-ok, former director general of the higher education policy bureau at the Education Ministry, was promoted to vice education minister. Choi has spent most of her career at the Education Ministry since passing the administrative exam in 1990. As chief of the office of the higher education policy bureau in 2020, Choi pursued several university entrance policies aligned with Korea's aging society. For the position of first vice minister of science, Lee named Koo Hyuk-chae, head of the office of planning and coordination at the Ministry of Science and ICT. Koo has held key positions within the Science Ministry, including as spokesperson, after passing an advanced national civil servant exam for technological positions in 1994. Roh Yong-seok, head of the office of small and medium-sized enterprises policy at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, has been appointed vice minister. Roh is an expert in trade and business management who spent the past decade at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. He also served as first secretary at the Korean Embassy in France from 2009 to 2012. Kang Hee-up, chief of the Metropolitan Transport Commission, was named the second vice minister of land and transport. He passed the advanced national civil servant exam for technological positions in 1994 and is considered an expert in transportation policies. Kang Yun-jin, who was appointed as vice minister of patriots and veterans affairs, is currently director general for patriots and veterans associations cooperation at the ministry. She is the first female vice minister for the Veterans Affairs Ministry. Appointments for six vice ministerial-level officials were also announced. Hong So-young became the country's first female commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration. She is the current head of the administration's central regional office. Judge-turned-attorney Cho Won-cheol was named minister of government legislation. Lee Myeong-ku, current deputy commissioner of Korea Customs Service, was promoted to commissioner. Huh Min, a professor at Chonnam University's department of earth and environmental sciences was appointed administrator of the Korea Heritage Service. Lim Seung-kwan, director of a task force for infectious diseases at the National Medical Center, was appointed commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Kang Joo-youb, deputy commissioner at the National Agency for Administrative City Construction, was promoted to commissioner.

Egypt lauds Korean support aligned with Vision 2030
Egyptian Ambassador to Korea Khaled Abdel Rahman lauded South Korea's development cooperation and investments that align with Egypt's Vision 2030, marking the 73rd anniversary of Egypt's National Day on Friday. The National Day, commemorated every July 23, celebrates the 1952 revolution that abolished the monarchy and established modern Egypt. As the country looks ahead, Vision 2030 serves as a blueprint to enhance the quality of life through justice, inclusion and civic participation. 'Complementing these investments, KOTRA, KOICA and the Export-Import Bank of Korea have supported Egypt's development through programs in green energy, digital transformation, vocational training and rural development — aligned with Egypt's Vision 2030,' said Rahman during a commemorative event in Seoul. He highlighted Egypt's $59 billion commitment to building a new smart city east of Cairo — integrating artificial intelligence, the internet of things, automated infrastructure and sustainable transport, expressing gratitude toward Samsung, LG, Hyundai Rotem, KHNP and Doosan, for investments in projects such as metro trains to the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant. 'The distance between the Pyramids of Giza and the palaces of Seoul may be great, but our aspirations converge,' Rahman noted. Egypt and Korea established diplomatic relations on April 13, 1995, evolving from cordial exchanges into a comprehensive cooperative partnership, significantly strengthened by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi's 2016 visit to Seoul and then-President Moon Jae-in's 2022 visit to Cairo. Meanwhile, Lee Tae-woo, Korea's Ambassador for International Cyber Cooperation, noted that bilateral trade surged from $500 million in 1995 to over $3 billion in 2023. Lee shared an Arabic saying, 'Al rafik kabl al tarik,' which means 'Choose your friend before choosing your path.' He added, 'With a good friend, even a tough road becomes enjoyable.' Krafton blames ousted founders for Subnautica 2 delay
Korea's leading game publisher Krafton pinned the blame for delays in the early access launch of Subnautica 2 on the founders of US subsidiary Unknown Worlds Entertainment, as a legal dispute simmers with the studio's dismissed executives. In a statement Friday, Krafton called its decision to replace the leadership at California-based Unknown Worlds a 'difficult but necessary step' to ensure the quality of the highly anticipated sequel. 'We allocated approximately 90 percent of the up to $250 million earn-out compensation to the three former executives, with the expectation that they would demonstrate leadership and active involvement in the development of Subnautica 2,' the company said. 'However, regrettably, the former leadership abandoned the responsibilities entrusted to them.' The three founders — Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire — were recently dismissed after remaining in their roles for about four years following Krafton's 2021 acquisition of the studio for $500 million, not including the earn-out clause. Krafton has since appointed Steve Papoutsis, former CEO of Striking Distance Studios, as the new head of Unknown Worlds. Krafton also announced Friday that Subnautica 2's early access launch has been pushed back to 2026, following earlier targets of 2024 and then 2025. The company cited a lack of sufficient content in the prerelease. In a statement on X the same day, Cleveland said the founders have filed a lawsuit against Krafton, insisting they remain committed to releasing an early access version of the game. 'Subnautica has been my life's work and I would never willingly abandon it or the amazing team that has poured their hearts into it,' Cleveland wrote. Subnautica 2 has been seen as a crucial release for Unknown Worlds, whose earlier entries in the franchise have sold about 18 million copies, according to securities firms. Delays to the sequel are viewed as a key factor behind the studio's declining performance. Unknown Worlds reported operating profit of 28.1 billion won in the first half of 2021, prior to its acquisition. Annual operating profit has since steadily fallen to 19.8 billion won, 16.9 billion won and 13.4 billion won over the past three years. While details of the lawsuit have not been disclosed, Krafton said it remains committed to supporting the studio and honoring promised compensation. 'We believe that the dedication and effort of this team are at the very heart of Subnautica's ongoing evolution, and we reaffirm our commitment to provide the rewards they were promised,' Krafton said.
