Broadway Musical About Betty Boop Is Fourth to Close Post-Tonys
'Boop! The Musical,' based on the iconic flapper from early animated shorts, announced on Wednesday that it would close July 13 after failing to find sufficient audience to defray its running costs on Broadway.
The show is the fourth new musical to post a closing notice in the 17 days since the Tony Awards, following 'Smash,' 'Real Women Have Curves' and 'Dead Outlaw.'
'Boop!' had a disappointing Tonys season — it was not nominated for best musical, and its request to perform on the awards show was rebuffed. It was nominated for best lead actress (Jasmine Amy Rogers), best choreography (Jerry Mitchell) and best costume design (Gregg Barnes) but won no awards.
The show's weekly grosses, consistently too low, ticked upward last week, but remain well below its running costs. During the week that ended June 22, 'Boop!' grossed $602,017, and 19 percent of the seats went unsold.
The musical began previews March 11 and opened on April 5 at the Broadhurst Theater. At the time of its closing, it will have played 25 previews and 112 regular performances.
Set primarily in New York City, the musical imagines that Betty Boop, an actress in films of the 1920s, time travels to present-day Manhattan seeking a greater sense of her self; in the city she finds friendship, love and clarity.
The musical, led by the veteran producer Bill Haber, had been in development for more than a quarter century, with shifting creative teams, and had a pre-Broadway production in Chicago in 2023. The version that finally made it to Broadway has a book by Bob Martin, music by David Foster, and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead; it is directed as well as choreographed by Mitchell.
Reviews were mostly positive. But in The New York Times, the critic Jesse Green was unenthusiastic, praising Rogers's performance and other elements of the show, but questioning its rationale, saying that 'a well-crafted, charmingly performed, highly professional production that nobody asked for' is 'disappointing,' and that 'one feels at all times the heavy hooves of a marketing imperative."
'Boop!' was capitalized for up to $26 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That money — the amount it cost to finance the show's development — has not been recouped.

Porsha Williams' Ex-Husband Breaks Silence On His Side Of The Divorce Story
Porsha Williams' former flame, Simon Guobadia, is singing a different tune about what led to the end of their 14-month marriage. The Nigerian-born businessman called out his ex-wife in a recent interview, accusing her of exploiting him for his money while he fell helplessly in love. He painted the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star as an opportunist who "targeted" him during a vulnerable moment in his life. Porsha Williams filed to end her marriage to Simon Guobadia in February 2024, claiming her ex-husband was no longer the man she once loved. However, he is calling BS on her victim narrative. Guobadia did not mince his words while addressing his divorce from Williams, which was finalized this month. He labeled the end of their short-lived union "a coup," stressing that he was "totally blindsided" by her actions. "I kept asking, 'Why did you file for a divorce?' And she wouldn't say anything," Guobadia lamented, noting Williams not only stayed silent about her reasons but he also lost contact with her family. Their reactions left the businessman feeling like the whole divorce was planned. Guobadia told Page Six he was the real victim, implying Williams was a gold digger after his money. "I think I was targeted. I was targeted from day one for financial reasons. When I filed for divorce from my previous ex-wife [Williams] was in my DM praying for me." The entrepreneur noted he was in a "vulnerable position" after his divorce from "RHOA" alum Falynn Guobadia, and Williams' timing could not have been more perfect. "I entertained it. So it just kind of snowballed from there," he recalled, adding: "Getting engaged in 30 days … who does that? I was out of my goddamn mind to have done that. Of course, I'm paying dearly for it." Guobadia's regrets continued with his heartbreaking loss during the divorce proceedings. The judge had sided with Williams' ruling to uphold the terms of the prenuptial agreement. The deal left the reality TV star with $560,000 in alimony and their marital home in Atlanta, among other benefits. Guobadia noted he would appeal the divorce ruling, stressing that he never contested his past prenups because he never felt targeted the way he did with Williams. The businessman's insistence that his ex-wife was after his wealth might be linked to his successful career. The entertainer's ex-husband reportedly migrated to the US in 1982 from Nigeria. He founded Simcol Petroleum Limited Company in 2007, which supplies refined fuels in the southeastern United States, according to PEOPLE. Besides his Petroulem venture, Guobadia dabbled in movies. The entrepreneur has been credited as an executive producer on numerous projects, including 2012's "Jail House Dogs," 2019's "Kill," and 2020's "Son of the South." Outside of business, Guobadia is the proud father of five children from past relationships; however, he did not welcome a child with Williams. As stated, Guobadia's romance with Williams blossomed after he ended his relationship with her "RHOA" co-star. The former couple finalized their divorce in July 2021, a few months after the entrepreneur popped the big question to his then-lover. Guobadia and Williams tied the knot twice, with their first wedding ceremony taking place on November 25, 2022. The event, a luxurious Nigerian traditional native law and custom ceremony, was followed by an extravagant American ceremony the next day. The first ceremony featured 250 guests, while the second had 350 attendees, both of which took place in Atlanta. The former couple spared no expense for their union, with Williams once describing her double weddings as "a dream come true." However, that fairytale ended 14 months later. While Guobadia argues that he was "targeted" by Williams, The Blast reported that she shared a different story. The TV personality explained that when her romance with the businessman began, they matched each other's energies perfectly. Williams added that their age gap did not bother her, but allowed her to feel safe and assured in their marriage. Nonetheless, things allegedly changed when Guobadia's complex legal status came into play, and her efforts to rectify the situation were overlooked. According to the Bravolebrity, she sought the advice of an experienced immigration lawyer to help Guobadia, but he was not having it. Their differences allegedly skyrocketed during an argument on Valentine's Day in 2024, leading to Williams filing for divorce as she no longer recognized her husband. Will Porsha Williams respond to Simon Guobadia's exploitation allegations?

Stephen Colbert Mocks Target's Trump-Evading ‘Toned Down' Pride Month Merch as ‘Cowardcore'
As Pride Month comes to an end, Stephen Colbert took some time in his monologue during Wednesday's 'The Late Show' to mock companies who have ceased outreach to the LGBTQ community since Donald Trump was elected. And he singled out Target, the big box retailer once known for widespread diversity efforts it abandoned after Trump was reelected. (A decision that severely damaged the brand and is also costing the company millions.) The retailer used to prominently sell queer-branded clothing, but this year is selling merch that critics mocked as 'Cowardcore,' an insult Colbert picked up during his monologue. 'Pride is both a celebration and a protest, and in the last few years, Pride marches have become really big business, raking in millions of dollars for their host cities. And when corporations heard all those Cha Changs, they jumped in with McDonald's parade floats and Marvel-branded merch and even advertising tie-ins, like in 2022 when Burger King introduced a pride Whopper with two equal buns, either two top buns or two bottom buns,' Colbert said. 'But ever since Donald Trump started viciously attacking the LGBTQ community, those same companies have now gone silent.' 'Corporate sponsors are now pulling back their pride support, because, as one corporate insider said, 'they never know if, day to day, they'll be targeted.' Wow, not knowing if you'll be targeted must be so hard for those companies, I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for them to come out to their parents as companies,' Colbert said with heavy sarcasm. 'Some corporations are trying to fly under Trump's radar with toned down pride merch, a fashion trend some are calling 'cowardcore.' Some of these pride-shy products can be found at Target,' Colbert said, at which point he showed viewers an 'oatmeal colored hoodie with nothing about pride on it, except the drawstrings that read 'out loud and proud,' that is so subtle that you're less likely to think the person is gay than you are to assume that they are oatmeal.' 'Target is also selling this pride tank Top,' Colbert continued, showing the nondescript item that only has a 'teeny little rainbow' on it. 'Wow, that seems weird, but, you know, it's actually quite useful if you're still trying to figure it out, you know? Huh, what do I think here? Gay, not gay, not gay. Gay, not gay. Bi?' 'I say, if you're going to be this nervous about supporting the LGBTQ community, why not just sell a plain black t shirt no rainbows, no fun slogans, just someone at the factory whispers the word 'lesbian' into,' Colbert added.
